This unforgettable experience takes you deep into the heart of Tanzania, where the iconic Ngorongoro Conservation Area awaits your discovery. Across a sprawling expanse covering over 8,000 square kilometers, prepare to be enthralled by the stunning landscapes that set the stage for some of Africa’s most spectacular wildlife encounters. We invite you to embark on an unforgettable journey as we delve into the wonders of the Ngorongoro safari, tailoring your experience for an adventure you’ll never forget. So, are you ready to begin?

An Overview: The Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area is renowned for its vast, unspoiled wilderness and unparalleled biodiversity. Nestled within the borders of Tanzania, the area encompasses several wildlife-rich regions, including the world-famous Ngorongoro Crater, the open plains of Ndutu, and the verdant slopes of Empakaai Crater.

The true charm of the Ngorongoro safari lies in the opportunity to explore these diverse landscapes while witnessing the remarkable coexistence of flora and fauna, immersing yourself in the rich tapestry of life that thrives within this protected ecosystem.

Wildlife Encounters: The Heart of the Ngorongoro Safari

No Ngorongoro safari is complete without the chance to encounter the dazzling array of wildlife that calls the conservation area home. Boasting over 25,000 large animals, the Ngorongoro Crater alone offers an unparalleled wildlife experience. Within its towering walls awaits a thriving ecosystem where some of Africa’s most iconic species freely roam, including the rare and elusive black rhino, the majestic African elephant, and the regal lion.

On your Ngorongoro safari, you’ll also be treated to sightings of the vast herds of ungulates that traverse these landscapes, such as wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles, closely stalked by stealthy predators like cheetahs, leopards, and hyenas. While exploring the Ndutu region, prepare to be mesmerized by the annual migration, when more than two million wildebeest and zebras make their way across the Serengeti plains on a journey marked by life and death, flourishing, and famine.

The Indigenous Cultures: Coexisting in Harmony

What sets the Ngorongoro safari apart from other wildlife adventures is the opportunity to interact with the indigenous Maasai people who have inhabited the region for centuries. Renowned for their distinctive beadwork, vibrant clothing, and semi-nomadic lifestyle, the Maasai are an integral part of the area’s unique cultural heritage.

On your Ngorongoro safari, take the time to visit a traditional Maasai village known as a “boma” and learn about their age-old customs, ancestral beliefs, and deep-rooted connection with the land. Witness traditional ceremonies and their prowess with jumping dances while gaining valuable insight into this fascinating way of life.

The Ultimate Itinerary: Tailoring Your Ngorongoro Safari Adventure

To make the most of your Ngorongoro safari, create a personalized itinerary that covers the highlights of this captivating region while catering to your interests, preferences, and duration of your trip. Consider the following:

1. Wildlife Viewing in the Ngorongoro Crater

The Ngorongoro Crater serves as the centerpiece of your safari experience, so plan to spend at least one full day exploring this magnificent caldera. Go for guided game drives and capture stunning photographs of the abundant wildlife residing within the crater.

2. The Great Migration

If the timing of your Ngorongoro safari aligns with the Great Migration, visiting the Ndutu region should be a priority. Witness the awe-inspiring mass movement of wildebeest and zebras traversing the plains, accompanied by predators and scavengers waiting for their chance to strike.

3. Visiting Maasai Villages

Take the time to step back from the wildlife encounters and pay a visit to a traditional Maasai boma, soaking in their rich culture and unique lifestyle during your Ngorongoro safari.

Unearthing Hidden Gems: The Lesser-Known Wonders

While the Ngorongoro Crater often steals the spotlight, there are several lesser-known yet equally mesmerizing destinations in the conservation area that should not be overlooked during your Ngorongoro safari:

1. Empakaai Crater

Just an hour’s drive northeast of the Ngorongoro Crater lies the lush and serene Empakaai Crater. This densely forested crater soars 300 meters high, providing panoramic views of its sparkling soda lake below. The solitude of Empakaai Crater offers a welcome change from the busier tourist hotspots, providing the perfect place for a leisurely hike and birdwatching.

2. Olduvai Gorge

Often referred to as the “Cradle of Mankind,” Olduvai Gorge is a significant archaeological site where groundbreaking discoveries of early human fossils have been made. A visit to the gorge and its accompanying museum provides an intriguing window into the ancient history of not only Tanzania but the entire human race.

Practical Tips: Making the Most of Your Ngorongoro Safari Adventure

1. Acquiring Relevant Travel Documents

Before you embark on your Ngorongoro safari, ensure that you have a valid passport and a Tanzania visa. For most nationalities, visas can be obtained either in advance from Tanzanian diplomatic missions or on arrival at the airport. Additionally, purchasing travel insurance is highly recommended.

2. Vaccinations and Health Precautions

It’s essential to visit your healthcare professional well in advance of your Ngorongoro safari to discuss necessary vaccinations or medication. This may include preventive measures for malaria, yellow fever, and other potential health risks. When traveling, stay hydrated, protect yourself from the sun, and carry a basic first aid kit.

Discover Unparalleled Accommodation Options

To enrich your Ngorongoro safari experience, consider staying in one of the many unique accommodations available in the conservation area. From luxurious lodges to intimate tented camps, there’s an option for everyone.

1. The Highlands Ngorongoro

This distinct, eco-friendly lodge provides a one-of-a-kind experience within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Offering eight stunning, dome-shaped tents with magnificent views, The Highlands Ngorongoro promises comfort, seclusion, and exceptional service during your stay.

2. Neptune Ngorongoro Luxury Lodge

Surrounded by lush, indigenous forests, the Neptune Ngorongoro Luxury Lodge offers 20 spacious, private suites with fireplaces, jacuzzis, and enchanting views of the Tanzanian landscape. Experience sumptuous dining in the Acacia Restaurant and unwind in the elegant lounges while you reminisce about the day’s adventures.

Gorilla Trekking, an opportunity to see the largest surviving primates in their natural habitats is heartwarming and life-changing.

eTurboNews:

Mountain gorillas, the most visited Gorilla sub-species, are found in Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. There are approximately 1063 individuals as per the last Gorilla Census of 2018.

Meeting these gentle giants in their natural habitats (typically rainforests with altitudes of 2500 to 4000 meters above sea level) requires proper preparation, and knowing what to expect is very helpful in having a perfect gorilla tour. Here are some important tips on how to plan the perfect Gorilla Trek:

Book your Gorilla Safari with a reputable Tour Operator

Gorilla Trekking is undeniably an incredible wildlife viewing adventure but can be a costly safari, especially if you consider high-end accommodation facilities. If you plan on going gorilla trekking, we advise doing some research on credible tour operators before booking with them, to ensure a perfect gorilla safari.

There are many fraudsters whom you may pay money to for a certain quality of service, but end up receiving substandard service. Hence, take your time to read reviews before deciding on the tour operator.

With a reputable company, all aspects of your gorilla safari – gorilla permits, accommodation, transport, and other logistics – will be planned, and all you will need to do is make prompt payments and be ready to enjoy your time with the giant apes.

Book Gorilla Permits in advance

Gorilla Trekking is done in only three countries, and each of them has a limited number of gorilla permits issued each day. The best way to guarantee a perfect gorilla safari is by booking permits in advance, preferably 6 to 12 months in advance.

It is interesting to note that only 96 gorilla permits are issued each day for Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, about 160 permits for Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda each day. You wouldn’t want to be disappointed last minute by booking gorilla permits late.

Get in shape for Gorilla Trekking

One of the prerequisites for having a perfect gorilla trek is being in shape for the adventure, as it requires walking through dense vegetation and high altitudes (between 2500 and 4000 meters above sea level).

Gorilla Treks also involve hiking steep slopes, crossing muddy terrains, and jumping streams, which require a physically able person. You can practice hiking hills, climbing steps, or jogging. However, this doesn’t mean that elderly individuals, people with reduced mobility, or physically unfit travelers can’t achieve their dream of meeting face-to-face with the Giant Apes in their natural habitats.

In fact, we have had cases of 80-year-old visitors participating in the adventure with the provision of Sedan Chairs (hired at $300 to $500 per person), lifted by four able-bodied porters.

Pack for a day in the forest

Remember that mountain gorilla natural habitats are hilly, densely forested, and cold (17 to 23 degrees Celsius), and there are great chances of experiencing rain showers or hot sunshine during your gorilla trek.

For this reason, it is recommended to always dress in long-sleeved shirts, breathable and lightweight safari pants, sturdy hiking boots, a lightweight rain jacket, gaiters, a safari hat, and sunglasses. Also, carry an insect repellent, enough drinking water, energy-giving snacks, and wear plenty of sunscreen, in addition to your camera and binoculars.

We always say a camera is a must-have for recording your gorilla trekking experience, so make sure to have plenty of batteries and memory space because sightings are usually incredible.

Follow the guidelines

Before you head out on your gorilla trekking adventure, you will be provided with a set of guidelines that you must follow while trekking and when spending time with the Mountain Gorillas.

Always follow them for your safety and that of the mountain gorillas. Some of these guidelines include not using flash cameras for photography, not feeding or touching the Giant Apes, maintaining a distance of 7 meters when watching/photographing them, avoiding noise while trekking, leaving no trace/not littering, spending only the allocated one hour, not coughing or sneezing in the presence of the Great Apes, and avoiding direct eye contact.

In conclusion, planning the perfect gorilla trek is an exciting and fulfilling endeavor. By following these essential tips, you can ensure a memorable and rewarding experience with the majestic mountain gorillas.

Begin by booking your gorilla safari with a reputable tour operator, who will handle all the necessary arrangements. Remember to secure your gorilla permits well in advance to avoid disappointment. Prepare yourself physically for the trek by getting in shape and know that accommodations can be made for individuals with reduced mobility. Pack appropriately for a day in the forest, considering the hilly terrain, dense vegetation, and fluctuating weather conditions. Lastly, adhere to the guidelines provided to ensure the safety of both yourself and the mountain gorillas.

Chinese Tourists Eyeing Tanzania for Wildlife Safaris

eTurboNews:

Chinese tourists are eyeing Tanzania, attracted by abundant wildlife resources, the warm beaches of Zanzibar, cultural and historical heritage sites in both – the mainland and the island.

Other than the traditional European and American tourist markets, Tanzania is now eyeing Chinese tourists, mostly ‘photographic’ holidaymakers, to explore the country’s wildlife parks.

China’s fast growing and lucrative outbound travel market has about 150 million Chinese tourists traveling outside their country every year.

Tanzanian Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism had asked the Chinese Embassy in Dar es Salaam to devise joint strategies that would help to reach various parts of China and facilitate travel between China and Tanzania.

Minister of Natural Resources and Tourism, Mohamed Mchengerwa, held discussions earlier with the Chinese Ambassador to Tanzania, Chen Mingjian, and said Tanzania aims to attract more Chinese visitors to its most attractive tourist sites.

Mr. Mchengerwa said that China alone could help Tanzania to reach its target of five million tourists by the year 2025, banking on the strong Chinese outbound tourist market.

Data from the Tanzania Tourist Board (TTB) indicates that about 45,000 tourists from China are expected to visit Tanzania by the end of this year (2023), up from about 35,000 Chinese tourists currently recorded per year, mostly business travelers.

Tanzania is among eight African countries which have been approved by the China National Tourism Administration (CNTA) in Beijing as tourist destination for Chinese travelers.

Other African tourist destinations working on attracting Chinese visitors are Kenya, Seychelles, Zimbabwe, Tunisia, Ethiopia, Mauritius, and Zambia.

Tanzania is currently implementing an aviation agreement with China for Air Tanzania Company Limited (ATCL) to operate direct flights between Tanzania and China, from Dar es Salaam to Guangzhou.

The UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has recognized China as an upcoming major source of outbound tourists in the world.

A group of about 40 Chinese tourism business executives are currently in Tanzania on familiarization tour of Zanzibar beaches, wildlife parks, cultural and historical sites, developing strategies of attracting Chinese holidaymakers and tourism sector investments.

The Chinese tourism executives are expected to hold business discussions with the Tanzanian tourist counterparts, aiming to get to know each other, then create partnerships between the Chinese and Tanzanian tourism players.

The latest head-turning, ocean-going yacht from Emerald Cruises, Emerald Sakara, is undergoing its final fit-out in preparation for its upcoming sea trials.

Work is on schedule to complete the yacht’s stylish interior before it welcomes guests on board. There is now just three months to go until the luxurious vessel makes its debut sailing – an eight-day Ionian Sea Adventure, cruising from Athens to Rome, departing 5 August 2023.

Custom-built at The Halong Shipbuilding Company in Vietnam, Emerald Sakara is the second luxury yacht to join the Emerald Cruises fleet, following quickly in the wake of identical sister yacht, Emerald Azzurra, which launched in March 2022.

Boasting just 50 luxurious suites and staterooms, the majority featuring their own private balcony or terrace, like her sister yacht, Emerald Sakara carries a maximum of 100 guests per journey. Together, they create a new type of exclusive cruising experience, exploring ports and harbours only accessible to small yachts.
“Our director of product design – Karen Moroney – and I, have overseen the development and construction of Emerald Sakara, and having visited the shipyard recently can say it certainly exceeds our expectation,” said Glen Moroney, Chairman and founder of The Scenic Group, Emerald Cruises’ parent company.

“Being able to add to the Emerald Cruises fleet again so swiftly is a sign of the reception our new Emerald Yachts have received from guests and our travel partners. Emerald Sakara opens up a whole world of new destinations that are sure to spark greater demand.”
On board, Emerald Sakara’s Wellness Centre comes complete with a spa, gym and state-of-the-art infrared sauna for the ultimate indulgence, while its Sky Bar, Infinity Pool and comfortable public areas are perfect to relax and watch the world go by.

The yacht’s marina platform is designed with watersports in mind. Take the plunge into activities including swimming, snorkeling, paddleboarding, exploring with SEABOBs and even a water-trampoline.

Andrea Stafford, UK director of trade sales for The Scenic Group added “This is a beautiful new yacht that raises the game yet again. It’s our intention to show it off as much as possible, so we are planning some exciting fam trips for agents. Watch this space for more information!”

After debuting in August, Emerald Sakara will embark on a summer season exploring the clear coastal waters of Italy, Greece, Turkey and the Adriatic. From there, it’s off across the Atlantic for a winter of Caribbean and Central American sunshine, with the first Eastern Caribbean and Grenadines sailing scheduled to depart 17 November 2023.

The inaugural eight-day Ionian Sea Adventure begins in Rome (Civitavecchia) and heads to Athens (Pireaus), making a host of picturesque calls on the way. Guests have the opportunity to live it up with the glitterati on a guided walking tour in Capri, sample some of Sorrento’s famed gelato in one of the seaside towns, or even take in the colourful mountainside houses of Amalfi on a kayak tour* of the coast. Other tempting excursions include the chance to go river tubing in Alcantara, hike through olive groves in Cephalonia and step back into ancient Greece with a tour of Delphi’s ruins.

Emerald Sakara’s inaugural sailing is sold out, but guests can join the Ionian Sea Adventure itinerary from £3,926 per person, departing on 07 September 2024. *DiscoverMORE optional excursions and activities are at an additional cost.

Economic, Social and Environmental Impacts of Mountain Tourism

eTurboNews:

Mountain tourism represents between 9 and 16% of international tourist arrivals worldwide, translating into 195 to 375 million tourists for 2019 alone. However, the scarcity of domestic mountain tourism-related data makes it difficult or even impossible to assess the economic, social and environmental impacts of this important segment.

The new report from the UN agencies the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and the Mountain Partnership (MP) aims to address this data gap.

Mountain tourism for sustainability and inclusion

Mountains are home to around 1.1 billion people, some of them among the poorest and most isolated in the world. At the same time, mountains have long drawn tourists interested in nature and open-air destinations and outdoors activities like walking, climbing and winter sports. They also attract visitors with their rich biodiversity and vibrant local cultures. However, in 2019, the most recent year for which figures are available, the 10 most mountainous countries (in terms of average height above sea level) received only 8% of international tourist arrivals worldwide, the report “Understanding and Quantifying Mountain Tourism”, shows.

Managed sustainably, mountain tourism has the potential to boost the incomes of local communities and help preserve their natural resources and culture. And, according to FAO, UNWTO and MP, measuring the volume of visitors to mountains represents the first vital step towards unlocking the potential of the sector.

“With the right data, we can better control the dispersal of visitor flows, support adequate planning, improve knowledge on visitor patterns, build sustainable products in line with consumer needs, and create suitable policies that will foster sustainable development and make sure tourism activities benefit local communities,” FAO Director-General QU Dongyu and UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili stated.

Recommendations

The study, which was based around research carried out in 46 countries, shows that generating economic benefits, creating opportunities for local communities and developing sustainable products are the main motivations for mountain tourism development. The sustainable development of mountain tourism was also identified as a means to help to spread tourism flows, tackle seasonality and complement existing tourist offerings.

Through the report, FAO, UNWTO and MP highlight the importance of collective efforts, involving public and private stakeholders from across the value chain, to improve data collection, standardization and delivery to gain a more comprehensive assessment of mountain tourism in terms of volumes and impacts, so that it can be better understood and developed to align with the Sustainable Development Goals. The report also calls for concerted work to help raise awareness of the socio-economic importance of tourism in mountains and targeted policies to create jobs, support small and medium sized businesses and attract green investments in infrastructure and the digitalization of tourism services.

Nepal Observes National Acessible Tourism Day 2023

eTurboNews:

The Sixth Accessible Tourism Day of Nepal was celebrated on 30 March 2023 with travel along the ‘wheel trek trail’ at Basuki Thumka, a hill flank at Sanga Village, Kavre District. More than 40 wheelchair users participated, together with scores of well-wishers, people’s representatives, accessibility experts, community leaders and government officials.

The winding wheel trek trail, as planned, will take wheelchair users over two kilometers of mild gradient to the top of the Basuki Thumka. A 400-meter section of the trail through pristine pine forest has been complete with the help of the Bagmati Provincial Government and local community. When the full trail is complete, from the top of the hill visitors will be able to take in a broad panorama of the Himalayan chain to the north as well as views of Kathamandu Valley and the surrounding hillsides.

Nepal’s Accessible Tourism Day began to be marked on 30 March 2018, at the initiation of Nepal Tourism Board (NTB), the International Development Institute (IDI) and Four Seasons Travels & Tours. The celebration this year at Basuki Thumka was organized by the Spinal Injury Sangh Nepal (SISN), with the support of the above-mentioned organizations as well as the Miral Welfare Foundation and the Sanga village community.

The ‘Basuki Thumka Wheel Trek Trail’ observation was led by Member of Bagmati Provincial Assembly Hon. Laxmi Ghimire, a person with spinal cord injury and a wheelchair user, as well as Dr. Shanta Dixit, Chair of the SISN which runs the Spinal Injury Rehabilitation Centre (SIRC). Community leader Uddhav KC thanked all wheelchair users and supporters for attending and expressed the hope that besides being a destination for domestic and international tourists, the wheel trek trail would help support the local economy.

The wheeltrek tour was followed by a panel discussion on ‘Tourism for All’, held at the Spinal Injury Rehabiliation Centre (SIRC), which is located at the base of the Basuki Thumka hillside. The discussion was moderated by Dr. Raju Dhakal, Medical Director of SIRC, who highlighted the importance of wheelchair tourism for physical and mental wellbeing of the spinally injured.

Kanak Mani Dixit, founder chairperson of SIRC who envisioned the project, led the discussion by explaining his coinage of the term ‘wheel trek’, whose goal was to allow wheelchair users to enjoy the hills and mountains trails of Nepal as do other trekkers. He suggested that wheel treks in Nepal can be a source of enjoyment for domestic as well as international wheelchair users, and also contribute to the national economy as accessible tourism progresses.

Among the panelists, Suman Ghimire, senior manager of Nepal Tourism Board, expressed the commitment of his organization to support the goals of ‘Tourism for All’ through promotion of accessibility. Suman Raj Timsina, Director of IDI, highlighted efforts thus far to promote wheelchair trails in Nepal, including in Dhulikhel and Pokhara. Pankaj Pradhananga, Director of Four Season Travel & Tours, said the commitment of the Government and dynamism of the private sector would go a long way in ensuring success of the campaign for barrier-free accessible tourism.

eTurboNews:

JW Marriott, part of Marriott Bonvoy’s global portfolio of 30 extraordinary hotel brands, today announced the opening of JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge, marking the company’s highly anticipated debut in the luxury safari segment.

Sitting within the Masai Mara National Reserve in Southwestern Kenya, one of Africa’s most renowned wildlife and wilderness conservation regions, the lodge is a sophisticated and thoughtful sanctuary from which to discover nature and breathtaking vistas in harmony. Exhilarating guided game drives offer guests the opportunity to observe the “Big Five” that Masai Mara is home to, including lions, leopards, buffalos, rhinoceros, and elephants. Between June and September, the reserve is host to the annual great wildebeest migration, which sees more than 10 million animals travel a distance of 1,800 miles from the Serengeti in neighbouring Tanzania.

“Fostering meaningful connections and nourishing the soul is at the heart of the JW Marriott brand, so entering the luxury safari segment is a natural next step,” said Bruce Rohr, Global Brand Leader, JW Marriott. “Offering our guests once-in-a-lifetime experiences and a deep connection to place, JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge balances the thrill of a game drive with thoughtful opportunities to switch off and take it all in. We are excited to welcome travellers to a transformative and wellness-forward stay delivered with JW Marriott’s legacy of extraordinary hospitality.”

Inspired Design

The lodge’s elegant interiors, designed by Kristina Zanic Consultants, seamlessly blend the savannah inwards, drawing inspiration from the elements with soft, warm tones, natural materials and textures, and native colours thread through its design. Each of the lodge’s 20 private tents provide a peaceful sanctuary to recharge and reset, and feature terraces overlooking the River Talek, a water source and habitat for many wildlife. The tented honeymoon suite offers a private plunge pool, while two interconnecting king and twin suites are ideal for families with children over the age of six (the minimum age of guests at the lodge).

Wellbeing and Mindful Practices

In keeping with JW Marriott’s ethos of mindfulness, the lodge is home to a number of thoughtfully designed spaces from the cosy Adventure Lounge full of books to get lost in and a space for young adults to take time for themselves, to the Cultural Deck where guests can gather around the fire pit to share tales of the day’s exploration.

Capturing the essence of rejuvenation, the Spa by JW emulates the serenity of the reserve and offers tailored experiences and signature treatments which blend locally inspired techniques and therapies. These are complemented by natural and organic products by renowned African skincare brand, Healing Earth, also available as in-room amenities. Guests can enjoy spa treatments from the comfort of their tented suite, accompanied by the sounds of the wilderness. Extending beyond body to mind and spirit with guided yoga, treatments include a ‘Masai Celebration’ incorporating local botanicals and therapies.

Nourishing Culinary Journeys

At the heart of the camp is the JW Garden – an outdoor space for guests to spend time discovering home-grown, organic ingredients, including the lodge’s signature rosemary. The garden’s produce is used by the lodge’s chefs to craft personalised dishes, cocktails, and mocktails. The garden will host daily programming, including live cooking, interactive cocktail mixology, and chef-led talks for a true farm-to-table experience. A relaxing gathering place, Fig Tree Lounge offers panoramic views of the surrounding plains from the indoor and outdoor bar and serves refreshing cocktails and mocktails infused with seasonal ingredients from the lodge’s garden. An indoor and alfresco dining experience at Sarabi Restaurant takes guests on a nourishing epicurean experience guided by JW Garden ingredients and local culinary heritage. Guests can venture out into the reserve with the lodge’s guides to enjoy a freshly prepared ‘Bush Breakfast’ or dinner while sipping sundowners and soaking in the breathtaking savannah vistas.

Connection to the Locale

The lodge’s community programming provides an authentic insight into meaningful local projects, including The Maa Trust, an organisation empowering local people by promoting small business start-ups. The lodge donates a percentage of the nightly rate per person to the organisation and provides a space for craftspeople to retail Maa Beadwork and produce. Guests can visit The Maa Trust to meet with local artisans and forge a deeper connection to the people in the area.

Currently, 60 percent of the lodge’s team are locals, with plans to reach 70 percent, ensuring the hotel’s contribution to the socio-economic development of the region. As an ongoing initiative, JW Marriott Masai Mara’s Apprenticeship Programme invites young women from the community to diversify their skills and broaden their experience to kick-start their careers in the hospitality industry. Partnership with the community began during the early development process of the lodge. Developed on land committed to a tourism project so as not to unduly disturb the surrounding environment, much of the construction was undertaken by local experts overseen by technical specialists, with build materials sourced from sustainable suppliers. The lodge has rehabilitated access roads to the property, installed power to the area, and provided access to clean drinking water for locals through a water treatment plant.

Emphasis on waste reduction and recycling is integral to daily operations. The lodge’s water treatment plant provides recycled and sanitised water; food waste is placed at the lodge’s compost site; and water wells are dotted around the lodge for animals to quench their thirst throughout the day.

By supporting local organisations such as The Mara Elephant Project and The Mara Protector Conservation Programme, JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge contributes to protecting animals and their habitat across the greater Mara ecosystem. Bringing a passion for the surrounding wildlife and nature to guests, the lodge’s Head Guide is a lifelong conservationist who holds talks about local culture at the lodge as well as guided walking tours. With an abundance of meaningful moments to experience at the lodge, guests can delve into photography and learn new skills at the lodge’s very own studio.

JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge is a 30-minute drive from Keekorok Airstrip and a 25-minute drive from Sekenani Main Gate.

eTurboNews:

This cutting-edge archaeological park, the first of its kind, is made possible by the Malta Airport Foundation and Heritage Malta, and is set to be launched this spring. The new underwater park is located in Xlendi Bay in the southwest corner of Malta’s sister island of Gozo.

First discovered in 1993, this deep-water archaeological park, encompassing an area of 67,000 square meters (approx. 42 miles), will allow international researchers and technical divers to explore the history of Malta from a totally different deep sea archaeological perspective. The marine park will showcase thousands of ancient artifacts, such as amphorae and urns, dating back to around 2,300 years, and natural heritage in the form of rocky outcrops formed by extinct coral reefs.

The Malta Airport Foundation Chairman, Josef Formosa Gauci, stated, “Through the Underwater Malta website, the foundation also hopes to support Heritage Malta in bringing this project closer to people who are neither divers nor researchers but are keen to learn more about the Maltese Islands’ history through our underwater cultural heritage.”

Professor Timmy Gambin from Heritage Malta stated: “I am very proud to be part of the team launching the Tower Wreck Deepwater Archaeological Park. Heritage Malta, together with the University of Malta and the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage, is valorizing and sharing a unique site that is otherwise invisible to the vast majority of the world. Thanks to support from the Malta Airport Foundation, this ambitious and challenging project has gone from concept to reality.”

Underwater Malta

The Underwater Malta website will make the deep-water archaeological site accessible to all through 360-degree videos, images, and 3D models, which is a virtual museum of the islands’ underwater archaeological sites. The marine park will be the site of a small museum with some exhibits and video footage of the seabed archeological park. Minister Bonnici stated, “Through this virtual museum, more people can discover our underwater cultural heritage and appreciate the unique sites in our seas.”

About Malta

The sunny islands of Malta, in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, are home to a most remarkable concentration of intact built heritage, including the highest density of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in any nation-state anywhere. Valletta, built by the proud Knights of St. John, is one of the UNESCO sites and the European Capital of Culture for 2018. Malta’s patrimony in stone ranges from the oldest free-standing stone architecture in the world, to one of the British Empire’s most formidable defensive systems, and includes a rich mix of domestic, religious and military architecture from the ancient, medieval and early modern periods. With superbly sunny weather, attractive beaches, a thriving nightlife and 8,000 years of intriguing history, there is a great deal to see and do.

eTurboNews:

Vail Resorts, Inc. today announced My Epic Gear, a new membership program that provides the best benefits of gear ownership but with more choice, lower cost and no hassle. My Epic Gear provides its members with the ability to choose the gear they want, for the full season or for the day, from a selection of the most popular and latest ski and snowboard models, and have it delivered to them when and where they want it, guaranteed, with free slopeside pick up and drop off every day. In addition to offering the best skis and snowboards, My Epic Gear will also offer name brand, high-quality ski and snowboard boots with customized insoles and boot fit scanning technology. The entire My Epic Gear membership – from gear selection to boot fit to personalized recommendations to delivery – will be at the members’ fingertips through the new My Epic app.

My Epic Gear will officially launch ahead of the 2024/25 winter season at Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, Keystone, Whistler Blackcomb, Park City Mountain, Crested Butte, Heavenly, Northstar, Stowe, Okemo and Mount Snow. Further expansions are expected in future years. A limited number of Epic Pass Holders will pilot the membership at Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge and Keystone during the 2023/24 season.

“Having the right gear is essential to the experience of every skier and rider, however, the traditional model of gear ownership and gear rental has not changed in decades,” said Kirsten Lynch, chief executive officer of Vail Resorts. “My Epic Gear reimagines gear ownership and gear rental, whether guests want the certainty of their gear for the season or for the day, transforming the quality, service, convenience and cost of one of the most critical parts of the mountain experience.”

“Like many other business models in lodging and transportation that leverage technology and scale to allow guests to transition from ownership to the benefits of the ‘access economy,’ My Epic Gear will leverage our extensive footprint and experience selling, renting and delivering gear, our prime slopeside locations across our mountain resorts, our data, the relationships we have with top gear vendors and over two million Pass Holders, as well as the scale to invest in the technology and most popular gear for the guest,” continued Lynch.

My Epic Gear Membership Benefits

• Choose a model of ski or snowboard at the beginning of a season, and be guaranteed that model will be available any day of the season, fully tuned.
• Try a different model of ski or snowboard any day, such as powder skis, based on availability.
• Select from the most popular and latest skis, snowboards and boots.
• Choose from name brand, high-quality ski and snowboard boots with customized insoles and boot fitting process. Option to opt out of choosing boots, if guests prefer to use their own.
• Ease of free in-resort delivery, and slopeside pick up and drop off every day, at every participating mountain resort.
• The new My Epic app will manage the entire experience, from gear selection to boot fitting to delivery.
• Low daily fee for each day the gear is used.

The Gear You Want

At the beginning of the season, My Epic Gear members can select a favorite model of ski or snowboard and that gear will be tuned and available to them every day, at any participating resort, guaranteed.

My Epic Gear will have 15 different leading brands and more than 50 of the most popular and latest ski and snowboard models available, including personalized recommendations to help guests determine the right gear for their needs. My Epic Gear’s customized boot fittings will leverage scanning technology, and members will have access to name brand, high-quality boots with insoles for a customized fit. Members can also opt out of choosing boots, if they prefer to use their own.

In addition to choosing their favorite gear for the season, guests can also sample from the most sought-after brands and models of skis and snowboards for all terrains, weather conditions and skill levels, subject to availability. My Epic Gear will collect guest feedback throughout the season and will recommend the best option for a guest based upon their experience level, conditions, and the latest equipment choices, as well as reviews from members in the program.
“Most gear owners have their skis and snowboard sitting idle, untuned, for most of the year, but they want the certainty of having the gear they want when they get on the mountain. My Epic Gear will offer a much lower cost option, without the hassle of transporting, maintaining, or upgrading to the latest models, while still providing the certainty of having the gear they choose when they get on the mountain. For gear renters, My Epic Gear gets them the best skis and snowboards, name brand, high quality-boots with a customized fit, and the specific gear they want, ready for them, when and where they want it,” continued Lynch.

The Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) has revised procedures of the Trekking Information Management System (TIMS).

]]>

eTurboNews:

This new provision is designed to ensure the safety and security of visitors trekking in protected areas in the mountains of Nepal. With the new provision, all trekkers are required to obtain services of a licensed trekking guide and to obtain a TIMS Card through authorized trekking agencies registered with the Government of Nepal. The new provision shall come into effect on March 31, 2023.

The decision has been made subsequent to a series of discussions with trekking and exhibition stakeholders and relevant trade unions in Nepal to help mitigate adverse incidents such as getting lost en-route, health issues, and/or natural disasters. With the implementation, trekkers will have immediate access to a professional support system and will help in addressing the challenges of rescue operations in case of any unwarranted situation.

In October of 2022, heavy snow fall led to 200 trekkers in Upper Dolpa and 100 trekkers in Upper Manang being left stranded. One trekker died as well as a Nepali guide.

Three Nepali guides also went missing for a period as they lost their way in the snow. In that same year, trekkers have gone missing, some to be later found and some who remain missing. Some were with guides, some were trekking alone. Some had guides who allowed them to go forward on their own.

In November, a group of 22 people including 12 foreigners, 8 porters, and 2 guides, went on the Annapurna Circuit trek. As they were trekking, the weather turned bitterly cold leading to the deaths of 2 Thai citizens. All in all, 2022 was a bad year of missing trekkers and fatalities in Nepal.

Looking at previous years, in 2019, there were 2 missing trekkers who were found deceased. In 2018 ,there were 3 confirmed missing trekkers but a total of 7 unconfirmed missing trekkers. This is compared to 2017 which had 5 missing trekkers, and in 2016, which also had 5 missing trekkers. Overall, the standard of trekking safety in Nepal has plummeted.

In addition to safety, the new provision will create employment for workers in the tourism sector in Nepal and discourage unauthorized trekking operations in the country.

The fees for the TIMS Card have been revised to NPR 1000 per person for SAARC citizens and NPR 2000 for the rest of the world. The provision for Diplomatic Missions in Nepal will remain as before, however, accompaniment by a licensed guide shall be required. Fees, passport photocopy, and passport size photographs are required to obtain the TIMS Card.

Detailed guidelines for the new provision will be published shortly, with NTB stating that it is positive this step will pave the way for sustainable, responsible, and eco-friendly tourism in the Himalayan region of Nepal.

Uganda Moves 200 Kobs to Kidepo Valley National Park

eTurboNews:

Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has commenced the translocation of 200 Uganda Kobs from Murchison Falls Conservation Area to Kidepo Valley Conservation Area.

30 males and 170 females will be translocated from Kabwoya Wildlife Reserve in Murchison Falls Conservation Area and released into Kidepo Valley National Park.

This is the second translocation of Kobs to Kidepo Valley National Park in six years, following the translocation of 110 Kobs to the park.

In 2017 UWA conducted a similar operation in order to diversify wildlife species in Kidepo Valley National Park which was replicated in Katonga Wildlife Reserve, Lake Mburo National Park and Pian Upe Game Reserve to include the majestic giraffe species.

The Kob population in the park has since increased from 4 individuals in 2017 and is estimated between 350-400 following the 2017 translocation and successful natural breeding over the last five years.

This year’s translocation operation will see the Kob populations in the park increase to six hundred individuals.

The Executive Director of Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) Sam Mwandha said that the translocation will see the number of Kob population increase and multiply faster in the park which will ensure their long-term survival.

“The current population of Kobs in Kidepo Valley National Park is not what we want, therefore we have to reinforce it by taking more Kobs there. Having Kobs in different parks will play a significant role in ensuring their long-term survival”, he said.

The translocation operation was flagged of by the UWA Director for Conservation John Makombo in Kabwoya Wildlife Reserve. He said that the translocation addresses one of UWA’s key strategic objective of species, population restoration in places where they initially ranged to ensure their survival especially in light of the current land use changes and other developments in their current ranges.

“This exercise is key in the fulfilment of UWA’s mandate of protecting and conserving Uganda’s wildlife resources, we are expanding the species range mindful of the land use changes in the country”, he said.

The translocation is aimed at re-enforcing the Kob population in Kidepo Valley National Park to enhance breeding, genetic diversity and ecosystem balance. It will also meet UWA’s strategic objective of restoring species in their former rangelands, enhance biodiversity and ecosystem balance and utilization and improve tourism in the park.

So significant is the Uganda Kob to the country that, together with the grey crowned crane, it adorns Uganda‘s National Emblem, the ‘Coat of Arms’ representing the diversity of wildlife in its imposing presence on all government symbols including the national flag.

The Uganda Kob is similar in appearance to the impala but it is more sturdily built. Only males have horns, which are lyre-shaped, strongly ridged and divergent. Males are slightly larger than females, being 90 to 100 cm at the shoulder, with an average weight of 94 kg. while females are 82 to 92 cm at the shoulder and on average weigh about 63 kg. The white throat patch, muzzle, eye ring and inner ear and the golden to reddish-brown coat/skin color differentiates it from other Kob subspecies.

Kobs are typically found in open or wooded savannah within reasonable distance from water and in grasslands near rivers and lakes. About 98% of the present population are found in national parks and other protected areas.

Uganda Kobs are herbivores and feed largely on grasses and reeds. The females and young males form loose groups of varying size, which range according to food availability, often moving along watercourses and grazing in valley bottoms. They can travel 150 to 200 km in search of water during the dry season. Females become sexually mature in their second year while males do not start breeding until they are older. Calving takes place at the end of the rainy season; a single calf is born in the months of November or December, after a gestation period of about nine months.

eTurboNews:

This racing season, the Barbados brand will be showcased on the Barbadian Formula two racer’s helmet, suit and race car. Showcasing Barbados visually in the motorsports world circuit is a huge achievement for Zane and Barbados as a whole.

Putting Barbados on the Map

The Barbados branding and design, which are featured on the gear, visually represent the partnership between the Barbados Tourism and Marketing Inc (BTMI) and Zane Maloney to showcase Barbados as a sports destination and the Motorsport Island.

Speaking on the partnership Zane said “I am very excited to be partnering with the BTMI to continue to bring awareness to Barbados as the Motorsport Island and destination. I hope that with this partnership I can further put Barbados on the motorsport map as being a country that has the potential to perform at the highest level.”

Motorsports is a billion-dollar industry with loyal high-net-worth fans and enthusiasts all over the globe.

Partnering with Zane will help to engage and reach these high-net-worth individuals and further showcase the island to new niche markets.

Corey Garret, Director of Caribbean and Latin America, Sports at the BTMI, said: “Sport is a critical pillar in our overall marketing strategy to diversify Barbados’ tourism product and build a more sustainable destination. With Zane as one of our biggest advocates, we are positioning Barbados as the Motorsport Island, so these designs and branding are just the beginning.”

“We are proud to be partnering with Zane Maloney as he continues to make his name known on the motorsports racing circuit.”

The Concept Behind the Helmet

The overall design of the helmet was executed by Zane, along with the Red Bull team. However, Mario Knight, the Graphic Designer at the BTMI designed the Barbadian element of the helmet.

For the aspects of the design that are representative of Barbados, Mario explained his vision
was to showcase the heritage, culture and wildlife of the island.

“One of the most iconic symbols in Barbados is a Bajan Bus Stop Sign (red and white circle). Any Bajan that sees it recognizes it immediately, so it has become part of our identity. Surrounding the helmet features historical monuments like the Parliament Building of Barbados, our indigenous black belly sheep, our local Green Monkey and yellow silhouettes of flying fish which Barbados is well known for,” he said.

He added that the art piece features the Destination Barbados logo on the back of the helmet and its uniquely stylized trident in the center of the red and white bus stop. The back of the helmet also includes a turtle as Barbados’ beaches are renowned for turtle nesting.

Representing Barbados

Chief Executive Officer of Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc, Jens Thraenhart, said, “BTMI is looking forward to continuously supporting Zane as he makes strides in the motorsports, showing the world what young Barbadians can achieve.”

2023 will mark Zane’s first season on the Formula Two racing circuit with the Red Bull Racing Junior driver program, after finishing his 2022 FIA Formula 3 Season by being named Rookie of the Year.

Zane said he loved the design of the helmet, especially the use of the green turtle on the back. He is an avid nature lover and turtles are one of his favorite animals, so the helmet truly represents some elements of him.

WHO: Marburg virus outbreak in Equatorial Guinea kills 9 so far

eTurboNews:

The World Health Organization (WHO) announced that Equatorial Guinea government officials have confirmed the outbreak of the highly contagious and deadly Marburg virus, a disease similar to Ebola.

Initial tests sent to the Institute Pasteur reference laboratory in Senegal, with support from WHO, following the mysterious deaths of at least nine people in Equatorial Guinea‘s western Kie-Ntem Province, came back positive for the deadly viral hemorrhagic fever.

Illness caused by Marburg virus begins abruptly, with high fever, severe headache and severe malaise. Many patients develop severe haemorrhagic symptoms within seven days. The virus is transmitted to people from fruit bats and spreads among humans through direct contact with the bodily fluids of infected people, surfaces and materials.

According to WHO, there are currently no vaccines or antiviral treatments approved to treat Marburg virus disease, that has a fatality rate of up to 88%. So far, only supportive care – rehydration with oral or intravenous fluids – and treatment of specific symptoms, improves chances of patients’ survival.

So far, 9 fatalities and 16 suspected cases with symptoms including fever, fatigue and blood-stained vomit and diarrhea have been confirmed in the country.

Equatorial Guinea’s authorities quarantined over 200 people and restricted movement in its Kie-Ntem province. Neighboring Cameroon also restricted movement along its border over concerns about contagion.

“Thanks to the rapid and decisive action by the Equatorial Guinean authorities in confirming the disease, emergency response can get to full steam quickly,” Dr Matshidiso Moeti, World Health Organization’s regional director for Africa, declared in the official statement.

Amsterdam: Marijuana, booze and Red Light District don't mix

eTurboNews:

Amsterdam officials have announced new rules for the city’s world-famous De Wallen – Red Light District, that will take effect in the middle of May, 2023.

In an effort to improve safety conditions in the area and decrease the number of problems caused by rowdy tourists, new law will completely ban smoking cannabis in public spaces in the district between 4pm and 1am, Thursday to Sunday.

Additionally, no new visitors will be allowed into the old city district after 1am, according to the city council.

According to the Dutch capital officials, the restrictions could later be extended to include a ban on smoking marijuana outside coffee shops as well.

Amsterdam officials are also planning to launch a “stay away” campaign in the spring, to discourage visitors from traveling to the city purely for drug, alcohol, and sex purposes.

New laws are set to have a large impact on businesses, since entertainment establishments will now have to limit their operating hours, while sex workers will have to shut up shop by 3am. Restaurants and bars will have to close by 2am on Fridays and Saturdays.

Liquor stores and cafes, located in the Red Light District, which are currently banned from selling alcohol from Thursday to Sunday after 4pm, will have to completely remove all alcohol from their storefronts during that time, or hide them from view.

In a press release announcing the legislation, a spokesperson for the city council stated that the new laws will hopefully give the city residents more “peace late at night.”

The atmosphere in the district becomes “dire, particularly at night” as there are large numbers of people “under the influence that hang around for a long time,” the statement added.

Local Christian Democrat leader Diederik Boomsma declared that he was delighted with the new legislation, saying that Amsterdam needs to “finally get rid of its image as a Walhalla for paid sex and drugs.”

“Some days you can’t even walk around the center without breathing in the persistent stench of cannabis fumes, with glassy-eyed tourist zombies staggering about. That has to stop,” he said.

Amsterdam is notorious for its marijuana and hashish cafes and Red Light District, which attract millions of tourists every year. But the city residents have long complained that these venues attract street dealers, and that the rampant drug and alcohol use drive up crime rates in the capital.

eTurboNews:

The week attracted crews and spectators from the USA, the UK, Italy, Australia, and even Poland. The end of January sailing week was organized by the Barbados Cruising Club and the Barbados Yacht Club and sponsored by the Barbados Tourism and Marketing Inc (BTMI) and Mount Gay Rum Barbados

A Pivotal Year

Corey Garrett, Director of Caribbean and Latin America, Sports for the BTMI described the 2023 edition of Barbados Sailing Week as a pivotal year for the event. He said it marked the beginning of a five-year marketing plan to promote sailing week as one of the number one sporting activities in Barbados.

“We understand how important sports tourism is in Barbados and building it as a platform for locals and for our visitors will continue to do the destination well into the future. So, forming a strong partnership with the Barbados Sailing Association, the Barbados Yacht Club and the Barbados Cruising Club will definitely take us forward as a destination,” he stated.

This year the week was deemed one of the most inclusive as events such as kiteboarding, wing foiling and remote-control boating were officially added to the week of events. Along with the anticipated offshore and junior dinghy sailing races, there was also a fun day which included a paddle surfing race and a treasure hunt, explained Jens Thraenhart, Chief Executive Officer of BTMI.

The Legendary Race

What continues to make the week legendary is the highly anticipated Mount Gay Round Barbados Race.

The race dates back to the 1930s and is held annually on January 21, a national bank holiday, in honor of The Right Excellent Errol Walton Barrow, who was Barbados’ first prime minister, a sailing enthusiast and the co-founder of the Barbados Cruising Club.

The Round Barbados Race is also seen as the climax of the week for many, including Race Coordinator of Barbados Sailing Week, Chris Worme.

“My highlight of the event is the Round Barbados Race which has been a tradition for a number of years.”

“It has been going on since the early days with schooners and we have tried to develop it into a bigger event as we have managed to increase it now to a 7-Day Event,” Worme said.

Nine boats from around the globe competed in the race and even a Wing Foil tried to make it around the island.

Spectators were given the chance to view the iconic race from 13 designated points around the island. Some caught up with the action while dining or ‘liming’ at La Cabane, Tapas, Animal Flower, Round House, Sea Shed and John Moore Bar to name a few. Spectators could even track the boats via the YB Races mobiles application, which allows you to track live boat races around the globe.

Barbadian Zachary Stuart was stationed at La Cabane bright and early to watch his daughter Savannah compete on the Rapajam. He spent the day following his daughter and the race around the island, making a stop at a few viewing points.

This was his first time watching the race and he was very proud and nervous to watch his daughter out on the waters.

The most popular viewing point was Animal Flower Cave, as the north point of the island is the most challenging and enthralling point of the race.

Meg Matthews and her husband Bob were vacationing on the island from New Jersey and heard about the week while visiting the Animal Flower Cave prior. Meg previously sailed to Barbados so watching the race was an exciting full-circle moment.

A Unique Race

Though the race may be difficult, it’s exciting and includes different aspects of sailing in one race. That’s why Captain Matthew Barker keeps coming back to the island to participate in the race and the sailing week.

He has been participating for 10 years and his boat, the Blue Peter placed second overall in the Round Barbados Race.

Describing the race, he stated “The race is a lot of fun, it’s hard, it’s challenging but it’s worth it because then you finish it off with rum and a red cap,” he described.

For 40 years, sailors who participate in a Mount Gay-sponsored regatta have received a red cap featuring the Mount Gay logo, the name of the regatta and the year. During the first historic Round Barbados race, most boats sailed for the honor of the fastest time and a barrel of Mount Gay Rum. Today, this honor has transitioned into achieving the coveted Mount Gay Red Cap.

The Red Cap is an esteemed symbol of accomplishment in the international sailing community which must be earned. Around the globe, they say, if you win a red cap, you are a sailor, so it makes sense that after a fun and challenging race, the week of the event ends with the iconic Red Cap Party.

Spectators, crews and sailing enthusiasts all gathered at the Cruising Club to celebrate the sailors and a successful week with live music, deejays and of course Mount Gay Rum, in Barbados, the Birthplace of Rum.

Full Race Results for each event are available here.

Las Vegas of the Alps: Liechtenstein rejects casino gambling ban

eTurboNews:

Liechtenstein is a German-speaking, 15.5mi-long principality between Austria and Switzerland, known for its medieval castles, alpine landscapes and villages linked by a network of trails.

The principality’s capital, Vaduz, a cultural and financial center, is home to Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein, with galleries of modern and contemporary art.

Lichtenstein is not a member of the European Union (EU), but is a part of the European Economic Area, meaning it freely trades with all EU member states.

For decades now, Lichtenstein was considered a tax sanctuary, until it eased its banking laws in 2013 and joined an international forum to cooperate with international tax authorities.

In 2015, Lichtenstein has struck a deal with the European Union to exchange information with the authorities in Brussels on the accounts of EU citizens held by its banks.

Gambling has been legal in Liechtenstein only since 2017, but the country 1/10 the size of London now has a booming gambling industry, with six casinos currently operating there.

Recently, local anti-gambling group launched a campaign to ban gambling in Lichtenstein, claiming that the casinos posed “a big reputation problem” for the country that was at risk of becoming “a casino and poker hotspot in the middle of Europe.”

With casinos generating over $54 million in vital tax revenue for the country in 2022, Hans-Adam II, Prince of Liechtenstein and the state’s government officials strongly opposed the gambling ban.

According to Lichtenstein’s Deputy Prime Minister Sabine Monauni, casino gambling ban would be “too radical,” for the country and that gambling revenue is “relevant for our budget.”

Yesterday, during the national referendum, Liechtenstein voters shot down a measure to ban casinos in the country, with 73% of voters rejecting the ban and only 27% supporting it.

According to the country’s official government tally, nearly 70% of the principality’s 40,000 citizens took part in voting.

American post-COVID travelers booking fun destinations

eTurboNews:

Few sectors were as heavily impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic as tourism was. Confinement and restrictions were huge blows to operators and are still behind many of the challenges that firms face today.

However, 2022 was the year that marked the return to normality, with a much more stable epidemiological situation in most parts of the world. This allowed tourism to resume and almost reach pre-pandemic levels in some cases.

According to data compiled by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), a total of 477 million international tourists entered Europe between September and January last year, thanks to intra-regional demand and travel originating from the United States.

In addition, international expenditure by tourists from France, Germany, Italy and the United States of America is now at 70% to 85% of pre-pandemic levels, demonstrating a successful recovery from the worldwide lockdown.

In the latest study, travel industry analysts surveyed people in 14 different markets, including the United States, with the aim of understanding and analyzing the trends, behaviors and preferences of tourists in this new post-COVID reality.

The majority of Americans surveyed consider the level of entertainment of a destination before traveling there. They prefer going to a fun destination where they can take part in a variety of interesting activities during their stay. In turn, the second most influential factor when choosing a destination is the gastronomy the place has to offer.

Besides choosing fun destinations, 61% of Americans enjoy visiting place with great food where they can try new dishes.

Surprisingly, they no longer consider COVID-19 as a relevant concern when traveling. Two years ago, this was a main issue worldwide, and therefore the priority was choosing a Covid-safe destination. As mentioned previously, since these concerns are now in the past, the sector has almost achieved the pre-pandemic levels. In this regard, around 49% of Americans choose their destination based on COVID-19 safety, placing it as the third most influential factor when choosing a destination.

Compared to European countries, 56% of the European consumers surveyed revealed they investigate a country’s COVID-19 safety before traveling to it, making it the most influential factor when choosing a destination.

This percentage rises to 71% for Germans, making it the main reason to pick a location.

Regarding the least important priorities when traveling, American consumers do not tend to take the amount of sports activities available into consideration when choosing a destination. Around 24% revealed that this is not a determining factor when traveling.

Also, Americans do not mind traveling to a destination they have been to before, 28% of them are willing to choose a destination they have previously visited.

In addition to these travel trends, the study analyzed the most popular products and services when it comes to online shopping.

40% of Americans ranked travel tickets in third place, and clothing and concert tickets were ranked in first and second place respectively. In other words, Americans tend to book and plan their travels online, usually on airline websites, travel agencies or through travel agents.

Although 2022 was the year of the return to normality, many Europeans continued to keep COVID-free locations as one of the main reasons for choosing their holiday destination.

The fact that some countries were able to cope with the situation better than others may have been key to receiving more tourists this year.

Although the situation was still complicated, the tourism has picked up again, reaching almost pre-pandemic levels, with many people being interested in lesser-known tourist destinations or those that have more to offer in terms of culture and leisure.

The Nature Island is welcoming all Carnival lovers to its streets to participate in “Mas An Lawi” – the theme of this year’s Carnival.

The native kwèyol phrase for “carnival in the streets,” perfectly describes Dominica’s Real Mas, an authentic display of revelry, freedom, and culture with tasteful nods to the West African and Creole roots of the island. But much more than a display, Dominica’s Carnival engages participation and togetherness by locals and visitors alike.

This year’s Miss Dominica pageant, the national queen show, will showcase five beautifully talented ladies as they all seek the coveted throne. At the most recent Carnival press conference, Moesha Thomas of Petite Soufriere was officially sashed by her sponsor, the Dominica National Lottery. Additionally, Adicia Burton of the Kalinago Territory received sponsorship from Petro Caribe Dominica and was also sashed. Both ladies gave speeches thanking their sponsors. The three other contestants are Tarnia Latoya Eugene, Sandrin Elizee and Meeya Francis. The Miss Dominica Pageant will be held on Thursday, February 16th at the Carnival City (Windsor Park Sports Stadium’s Forecourt) from 8PM.

The Carnival Princess Show, organized by the Rotaract Club of Dominica, promises to delight patrons with performances by six lovely primary school aged girls on Sunday, February 5th.

Other exciting events to look out for include the weekly Stardom Tent and Mas Camp shows featuring local calypsonians who each give their rendition of local or global matters, creatively and often humorously expressed through the art of song. Stardom Tent, which celebrates 50 years this year, will be held each Wednesday from January 18th at Petit Miami, formerly Anchorage Hotel, while Mas Camp will be held each Friday from January 20th at M&G Jerk Hut Bar & Grill. Both venues are in Castle Comfort, an 8-minute drive south of the capital.

Meanwhile, the Portsmouth Carnival Committee is bringing “jump up” back to the streets of Portsmouth with the return of the Portsmouth Town Parade Carnival which starts at 2 pm this Saturday, January 21st in Portsmouth. Entertainment will be brought by Signal Band.

Dat is Kanaval, a new event on the Carnival calendar, will feature Alison Hinds of Barbados, DJ Wizz of NYC with Dominican roots, Triple Kay International, Unstoppable DJs, Kenny G, DJ Reo and more. The event is carded for Friday, February 10th from 9 pm at Carnival City.

Dominica Festivals Committee and Discover Dominica Authority extend warm gratitude to its major sponsors and supporters: Josephine Gabriel & Co. Ltd, FLOW Dominica, the Belfast Umbrella of Companies which produce BB Rum, known as the official rum for Carnival 2023 – Mas An Lawi; Convenience Plus and D Construction Solutions Inc., Republic Bank, National Bank of Dominica, Dominica National Lottery, and PDV Petro Caribe Dominica.

The Nature Island welcomes all to experience the Caribbean’s Real Mas An Lawi. Travel promotions to the island are being offered by L’Express des Iles, Air Antilles, and Val Ferry from as low as €80 to €99 for those persons originating from Guadeloupe and Martinique; all prices are subject to availability and booking conditions. Interested persons are invited to book via the website, local agents, or travel agents to access these special rates and book early.

Mas Domnik 2023 is presented by the Government of Dominica through the Ministry of Tourism and Discover Dominica Authority (DDA). Discover Dominica Authority encourages everyone to use the hashtags #TheRealMas, #MasAnLawi, #DiscoverDominica, #DominicaFestivalCommittee, #DominicaCarnival, and #MasDomnik in social media posts.

Winter thrills seekers: Best European countries ranked

eTurboNews:

Are you a thrill-seeker? If you’re looking to go off the beaten track for your next adventure, then finding the right hiking trail is essential with winter in full swing. But which country is best for thrill seekers?

With this in mind, the experts examined winter hiking trails across Europe. The factors considered were the number of trails, trails per 10,000 km2 for snowshoeing, skiing and hot springs. Data for land mass, climate, and trails counts for further winter activities were also collected.

This allowed for the calculation of an overall Winter Adventure Score and, as a result, to find out which countries have the best trails for sensation seeking adventurers.

Best countries for Thrill Seekers:

Switzerland is the top country for thrill seekers!

If you’re an adrenaline junkie then you already know that Switzerland is the place to be this winter, as it’s the country with the highest Winter Adventure Score at 90.8/ 100.

Home to the Swiss Alps, there are over 10,000 trails across the country, of which approximately 414 are accessible in the winter for thrill seekers. Including over 200 trails for snowshoeing which equates to 57 trails per 10,000 km2.

One of the most popular trails in Switzerland is Zermatt, Valais as it is known to be quite a challenging route through the Fluhalp mountain area.

Austria – 79.9/100

Austria is a close second with a Winter Adventure Score of 79.9 out of 100. It has 292 hiking trails suitable for extreme winter sports, Skiing trails amounting to at least 160 of those, at 19 trails per 10,000 kilometers squared.

However, if a day of brave adventuring takes it out of you then there are a total of 7 trails that lead you to relaxing hot springs.

Among the hot spring trails is the ‘Falkensteig’ route which although a great winter trail is also frequented by explorers all year round for extreme sports such as via ferrata, which is best done in dry weather.

Italy – 67.9/100

In third place is Italy (67.9/100). Although sharing the mountainous alps bordering Switzerland, Italy has approximately 95 more thrill seeking trails to discover this winter, at 509 in total.

And with 1198 sunshine hours yearly, there’ll be plenty of time in the day to explore them. Italy is among just five countries that have a thrill-seeking trail that accommodates ice-climbing for those daring enough to ascend the ice formations.

Sweden – 57.9/100

Sweden lands in fourth with a Winter Adventure Score of 24.1 out of 100. There are 3,947 hiking trails across Sweden in total, of those trails over 500 are thrill-seeking trails apt for outdoor winter activity. Over half of the thrill-seeking trails accommodate snowshoeing (333), equivalent to 8.12 trails per 10,000 KM2.

Wrap up warm when venturing to Sweden as the temperature has been known to dip as low as -30°C, however, the average temperature is just shy of 13°C, a whole 8° lower than the average temperature in Italy.

Norway – 53.3/100

In fifth place is Norway with a Winter Adventure Score of 53.3/100. There are 672 yearly hours of sunshine, 230 less hours than our top country, Switzerland, to the south. With so much sunshine there’ll be plenty of time to wander through the 500+ thrill seeking trails this winter.

Skiing accounts for 395 of those trails so ‘Rødtinden’ and similar routes in Finnmark are great for those looking to backpack, hike or, of course, ski for their next adventure.

eTurboNews:

An island surrounded by pristine, golden beaches and glistening turquoise waters. It’s a peaceful haven where you can lounge on the beaches and relax while sampling coconut water, cocktails and the country’s finest cuisine. But, for the more adventurous, thrill-seeking visitor, Barbados also has much more to offer!

Along with its beaches, there are caves, hills and valleys (locally known as gullies) scattered across the country. Thanks, in part, to all of these natural attractions, there is a wide array of activities, both on land and on the sea, to satisfy the thirst of the adrenaline junkies among us who are desirous of an adventure holiday.

Underground Adventures

Harrison’s Cave is one of the natural wonders of Barbados. Many visitors speak of the extraordinary beauty that is seen on the tram tours of this most popular attraction. A relaxing drive on a paved road displays the spectacle of coral stone stalactites and stalagmites sparkling in the calming, orange glow of the cave’s lights, while you are serenaded by the music of the underground waterfalls and streams.

However, if you are more of a spelunker at heart and want to experience the network of caves as the first explorers did, then the Eco-Adventure Tour will be more your speed. This extreme adventure begins with a leisurely walk through the surrounding beauty of the natural gully before entering the cave, where the level of difficulty drastically increases. Once inside, you are guaranteed the hike of a lifetime, with climbing, crawling and maybe even a little swimming through the area’s otherwise unseen and undeveloped caverns, using nothing but your headlamps to light your way. This tour lasts for approximately three and a half hours and is not for the faint of heart – it is a guaranteed thrill!

Harrison’s Cave

Land Lubber Adventures

If you prefer over-ground activities, then check out the Barbados Hiking Association and the Barbados National Trust’s historical hikes. You can participate in their weekly early morning treks, or perhaps you would rather join their afternoon or full moon hikes. These expert-led trails are a fantastic way to take in the picturesque, untouched beauty of the island, with walks that cover the length and breadth of Barbados. If you’ve never hiked before, don’t worry – there are varying levels of difficulty ranging from easy to more advanced treks. You can take a cool stroll along the path of the old railroad line; venture through the gardens of Jack in the Box Gully; explore the terrain around historic forts and plantation houses; discover the nature reserve and thick forestry at Graeme Hall swamp; climb the jagged edges of Chalky Mount; enjoy the east coast view after ascending Hackleton’s Cliff and maybe even go rappelling to get to the base of a cliff. Whether you are a beginner or an expert hiker, you will find a trail that suits your fancy.

Some visitors may enjoy the thrill of exploration and hiking in Barbados, others not so much…If that’s not you, don’t worry – you won’t be left out of the fun in Barbados!

Coco Hill

Tour companies like Island Safari Barbados promise visitors an unforgettably rough (and sometimes muddy) off-road trip in the back of a 4×4 vehicle, making their way through cane fields, bushes and along many paths off the beaten track. This tour will combine the excitement of off-roading with the history of Barbados as tour guides provide an engaging, immersive experience that will be one to remember. Spoiler alert – you might be able to spot some abandoned colonial buildings and even an eggshell bridge depending on your route! Island Safari Barbados offers a range of tour options, including a customizable or Tailor-Made Barbados Safari and a Land and Sea Safari for those who may want to incorporate snorkeling in their activities. Whatever option you choose, you are guaranteed three to six hours of exhilarating fun and, as a bonus, there will be drinks and a complimentary lunch along the way.

Ocean Adventures

Snorkeling with the turtles could prove to be too tranquil for the thrill-seeker. So for more extreme water adventure sports, you can visit any of the beaches on the south and west coasts. There you will find a range of adventurous water sports on offer. Jet ski operators line the shores waiting to train the novices and, on occasion, speedily bop across the waves with the experts. Should you want to merge your love of the ocean with the euphoria of flying higher than a jet ski can take you? You are likely to be stimulated by Jetblade Barbados’ Hydroflight where you will feel your body hovering with water-powered jetpacks over the cool waters of the Caribbean Sea. Alternatively, if you would rather have more control over your watercraft, windsurfing, kayaking and paddleboarding are also available along the outstretched coasts. The surfers are not to be forgotten! There are always waves to be conquered in Barbados. However, if you will be on the island during the winter months, surf lovers can head over to the world-famous Soup Bowl to battle with some impressive giants!

Lonestar Beach

Finally, as above and so too below, and for the more aquatically skilled among us, you can also treat yourself to deep-sea diving to view the enchanting reefs and dive sites along the south and west coasts with certified divers as your guides.

Land “Down Under”

Whatever your fancy and whatever your level of skill, there is an activity to meet your needs in Barbados. Our sun, sea and sand will always be there, but remember to check out these exhilarating thrills that are available year-round. Trust us, after indulging in all that excitement; you will probably want to go back to the beaches and relax with a signature island cocktail in-hand while watching the sunset and planning the next day’s adventures. So, if any of these adrenaline-pumping activities sound like a fun-filled vacation, then remember this – Barbados is calling you!

A well-protected plateau wetland system, Lashihai is home to more than 50 species of wetland birds! Local villagers have been farming around these lakes for many years, allowing the migratory birds here to live in harmony with both the locals as well as the visitors. This makes Heqing Caohai the most ideal place for close-up photography and observation of various wetland wildlife in China.

In addition to bird watching, tourists will also be able to visit traditional Tibetan villages that surround the Napa Sea and observe the local way of life with the cattle and horses roaming freely near huge highland barley stacks.

Rare Species of Birds in Yunnan:

The Black-necked crane

Regarded as a “sacred bird” by the Tibetans, it is also known as the “Fairy of the Plateau”. Black-necked cranes are the only cranes in the world that grow and breed on the plateau and can fly over Mount Everest, the highest peak of the world!

Purple Water Chickens

Purple Water Chickens

The largest population of purple water chickens in China can be found in the Heqing Caohai Wetland, with a total of more than 500 chickens. Except for their white undertails, the purple water chicken is almost completely blue and purple in color, and they often walk in the shallow water.

Most popular natural landmarks in US and the world

eTurboNews:

From the mystical Appalachian Trail which runs through the east, to the natural phenomenon that is Mississippi’s Petrified Forest, and the esteemed Grand Canyon, the US has volumes to offer when it comes to exploring natural sites and landmarks.

3,113 Americans were polled on which local natural landmarks they would most like to visit. It was revealed that the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which lies on the border of North Carolina and Tennessee, is the natural landmark most people would like to tick off their bucket list. Unsurprisingly, this destination is the most visited national park in America, having attracted more than 14.1 million visitors in 2021 alone. It’s no wonder so many others aspire to join the visitor’s book and witness the sprawling natural landscape, along with its year-round wildflower blooms, abundant rivers, waterfalls and forests.

In 2nd place, Niagara Falls emerged as one of the most popular natural landmarks, which is located on the Niagara River. At the Observation Tower at Prospect Point in the Niagara Falls State Park, visitors can behold a natural spectacle: a view of all three waterfalls.

Located in Belleview, Missouri, Elephant Rocks State Park is a geologic reserve and recreation area, and it emerged in 3rd place. It is named for a row of large granite boulders, resembling a train of elephants.

A closer look at the figures…

The top 10 natural landmarks Americans would most like to visit:

1. Tennessee’s Great Smoky Mountains National Park

2. New York’s Niagara Falls

3. Missouri’s Elephant Rocks

4. Wyoming’s Yellowstone National Park

5. California’s Redwood National and State Parks

6. Hawaii’s Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park

7. Hawaii’s Hanauma Bay

8. Iowa’s Pikes Peak State Park

9. Arizona’s The Grand Canyon

10. Hawaii’s Waikīkī Beach

The top 10 states’ share of most popular landmarks:

1. Hawaii 38%
2. Tennessee 34%
3. California 30%
4. New York 28%
5. Missouri 27%
6. Wyoming 26%
7 . Maryland 24%
8. Florida 24%
9. Kentucky 24%
10. Nevada 23%

When it comes to international landmarks Americans would most like to visit, the Galápagos Islands ranked at the top of travelers’ wish lists. Six hundred miles off the coast of Ecuador, born of volcanic eruptions, the Galapagos islands are home to over 2,000 species of animals including the giant tortoise, penguins, marine iguanas, sea lions, and the flightless cormorant to name a few. Inspiration to Charles Darwin’s evolutionary theory, this destination is one of the most magical and biodiverse locations in the world.

In second place came Australia’s Great Barrier Reef – on the North-East coast of Australia the reef is home to 400 types of coral, complex coral reef shoals, and 1500 species of fish.

The Tourism Authority of Kiribati (TAK) conducted a 4-day Tourism Restart Program training to all tourism businesses in Nonouti island from September 23-28, 2022.

The trainings included “Tourism and Hospitality for the New Normal” and “Tourism Business Fundamental and Revenue Management” delivered by Tourism Officer Training, Ms. Monika Rikita.

The Tourism Business Fundamental training covered recommendations for revamping business concepts and services offered through marketing and human resources capacity development programs. The Revenue Management training included best practices for managing revenue effectively as well as revenue forecast.

The COVID-19 safety protocol training highlighted the need for tourism business operators to protect its employees and guests from the threat of the virus through a pre-determined set of safety procedures set by the Ministry of Health & Medical Services (MHMS).

A total of 11 participants from different organizations and communities participated in the training. Of those, 7 of them were fishing guides, 1 tour guide, 1 from Nonouti Island guest house, 1 from Catholic Parish and 1 from Abamakoro Islet.

Since border reopening, TAK is encouraging all participants to apply what they have learned from the training for their guests and employee safety.

Kiribati is for travelers who have a passion for exploring and discovering, people who like an adventure off the tourist trail to places where few have been before, and people who want to understand a country – not just see it. Kiribati will challenge views of how life should be and show visitors a less complicated way of living where family and community come first.

Situated in the equatorial pacific, in the east Kiribati offers world class fishing (both game and bone fishing) from Kiritimati Island. In the west is the Gilbert Group of islands, which offer amazing and unique cultural experiences. The country’s capital of Tarawa has historic sites and artifacts where one of the bloodiest battles of World War II, the Battle of Tarawa, took place.

To get to Kiribati, there is currently only one airline with service to the most famous of the country’s islands, Christmas Island (Kiritimati).

Among them are cycling, trekking, safaris/wildlife viewing, snowshoeing, and culinary and wellness experiences.

Here are 7 trips around the world that exemplify these adventure travel trends.

Cycling Across America

Whether you prefer road biking, gravel or dirt, or want the ease of an e-bike, Adventure Cycling Association has a guided tour for you. Cycle the country’s Southern Tier from San Diego to St. Augustine, Florida, go on a gravel ramble in the mountains of Montana or bring an e-bike along for a fall color tour in Vermont.

Antarctic Expedition

Embrace the spirit of polar exploration on an expedition to Antarctica with Adventure Life. Watch for seabirds and the first icebergs as you cross the famed Drake Passage to reach the South Shetland Islands and the Antarctic Peninsula. Once there, experience the wonder of the white continent as you cruise along spectacular ice cliffs looking for seals and whales, and go ashore to visit penguin rookeries and historic huts.

Yellowstone Adventures

Set on the edge of Yellowstone in Big Sky, Montana, The Wilson Hotel serves as a basecamp for adventure. Guests can explore the natural wonders and wildlife of America’s first national park on their own or with a guided tour, and find hiking, mountain biking, snowshoeing, skiing and more around Big Sky.

Ozark Mountain Biking

The Ozark Mountains provide the backdrop for one of the best mountain bike trail systems in the country. Bentonville, Arkansas, is every bit the charming town it was when Sam Walton, founder of Walmart, opened the original Walton five-and-dime back in 1950. Today, it also offers world-class restaurants, colorful boutiques, a state-of-the-art museum and miles of singletrack to ride. Explore the area on a new five-day mountain biking tour with Escape Adventures.

Islands, Andes and Amazon

Discover the enchanting Galapagos Islands at Scalesia Galapagos Lodge, explore the Amazon Rainforest at Sacha Lodge and experience the Ecuadorian Andes at Hacienda Piman, all in a 15-day tour. Learn about endemic flora and fauna, hike near active volcanoes, paddle tannin-rich blackwater creeks and lakes, board a train through the mountains, take in a traditional dance performance and shop one of the biggest craft markets in South America.

Italy’s “White Road” Riding

Cycle Tuscany’s scenic Strade Bianche through hilly vineyards and medieval villages, enjoying the food and wines of one of Italy’s finest culinary regions on a new tour with Tourissimo and Ride and Seek. The itinerary is filled with “white roads,” interesting stops and authentic beauty.

Jackson Hole Retreat

If you’re looking for endless adventure surrounded by incredible views, look no further than Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Take a day trip to Grand Teton or Yellowstone National Park to see wildlife up close, try out a ropes course, relax in nearby hot springs and more, then retreat to a modern yet rustic cabin at Fireside Resort.

Manchester United fans troll club owners from the rooftop of Africa

eTurboNews:

A group of adventurous Manchester United Football Club supporters have climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania then sent a defiant message to the club’s owners from the world’s tallest freestanding mountain.

The explorers had traveled to Tanzania then climbed the full 5,895 meters of the mountain to literally take their protests to the new heights on top of Mount Kilimanjaro early this week, The Manchester Evening News reported.

The Reds fans have been increasing their calls for the Glazer family to sell the club due to their displeasure over their operations. A number of anti-Glazer protests have already taken place again this season, with supporters vowing to continue these until the owners are gone.

ManU followers were encouraged to learn of Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s active interest in a potential takeover last month. The British billionaire and Manchester United fan revealed he would be willing to buy a share in the club with the view of a long-term entire takeover.

This came after reports emerged claiming the Glazer family were considering selling a minority stake in the club. A growing number of fans are becoming more vocal about their demand to see the Americans sell up.

Many don the famous yellow and green scarves and banners in protest – and the supporters who scaled the dormant volcano Kilimanjaro are no different.

The fans have taken the protest to new heights amid a very rocky relationship between fans and owners.

Manchester United fans shared an image from Africa’s highest point which showed two United fans holding up a “Glazers Out” banner on the peak of Mount Kilimanjaro, the rooftop of Africa.

One Manchester United fan wrote: “Lifetime achievement climbing Kilimanjaro in Tanzania world’s tallest freestanding mountain sending a big message to Manchester United.

Manchester United fan Martin Hibbert had completed a remarkable feat earlier on June 13 this year, by reaching the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro on a wheelchair.

Hibbert, now 45, was told that he would never walk again when a bolt severed his spinal cord. But despite his life-changing injuries, he set out to raise money for Spinal Injuries Association, a charity that he says gave him hope, confidence and practical skills.

Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s tallest mountain was selected as the destination for his ambitious climb, and he prepared for the task over the last two years.

Hibbert used a specially modified wheelchair to embark on his mission and along with the help of his support group, he became only the second-ever paraplegic to reach the summit or the rooftop of Africa.
