Lunar New Year is a big yearly Festival and tourism event in Monterrey Park, and a night of fun and partying. Not tonight- it turned deadly.

Monterrey Park is known as a safe community in Los Angeles County, but Lunar New Year Saturday night turned into a mass shooting.

Partygoers were attacked by a man with a semi-automatic weapon shooting randomly at people, killing 9 and injuring 6 according to a Gunviolence Archive just published. This number is not confirmed by authorities yet.

According to a report in the LA Times, new details were available, including the number of people shot. Internal police communications said there had been some fatalities. One law enforcement source told the Los Angles Times, the causality count totaled more than a dozen people.

It happened near the intersection of Garvey and Garfield avenues at a Lunar New Year’s party at Star Ballroom Dance Studio.

The Studio was founded in Los Angeles 30 years ago and has 10,000 square feet of floor space. It is one of the largest dance studios in Monterrey Park.

A restaurant owner with a business on this intersection told the media that people were running into his restaurant wanting him to lock doors and shut windows.

Centrally located within the San Gabriel Valley, Monterey Park offers a number of opportunities to experience unique dining fare, great shopping, and patronage of numerous special events.

The cities tourism website says: For a small city, Monterey Park is proud to annually host a Lunar New Year Festival, Cherry Blossom Festival, Cinco de Mayo Celebration, Play Days (city birthday) parade and carnival, Fourth of July event, Artisan Faire and the Harmony Festival Auto Show.

I got an alert for it around 11:30 and was around 15 miles away from Monterey park, the app itself was going crazy. It’s unfortunate how unreliable these apps can be when their selling point is keeping people informed, a person tweeted.
