Travel and Tourism Deal Activity Plummets 41%

eTurboNews:

The travel and tourism industry has witnessed a massive 41% year-on-year (YoY) decline in deal activity from 475 deals announced during January-May 2022 to 282* during the first five of months of 2023.

The decline in deal activity in the industry indicates dampened sentiments and cautious approach of investors. The ongoing uncertainties and impact of the geopolitical tensions, inflation and recession fears have forced deal makers to adopt a more conservative approach.

All the deal types under coverage registered decline in volume. For instance, merger and acquisitions (M&A) deals volume decreased by 43% while the number of venture financing deals and private equity deals YoY declined by 34% and 44%, respectively, during January to May 2023.

The industry also witnessed a substantial YoY decline in deal activity across most of the regions worldwide during the period.

North America experienced a decline of 48% in deals volume during January to May 2023 compared to the same period during the previous year while Europe, Asia-Pacific and South and Central America regions registered decline of 49%, 27% and 36%, respectively.

Meanwhile, deals volume for the Middle East and Africa region remained unchanged.

The US, the UK, India, France, Australia and Japan witnessed significant YoY decline of 48%, 48%, 33%, 7%, 29% and 54%, respectively, in deals volume during January to May 2023.

On the other hand, easing of travel restrictions seems to be encouraging Chinese travelers. As a result, China stood out as a notable exception and registered a 19% YoY growth in the number of deals announced during the period.

*Mergers & acquisitions, private equity, and venture financing deals.

Note: Historic data may change in case some deals get added to previous months because of a delay in disclosure of information in the public domain.

Carnival Cruise Line welcomed the first guests to sail on Carnival Venezia from New York City today. The ship’s launch in New York coincides with the busy summer travel season and builds on an exciting period of growth for Carnival, as the first of three ships to join the fleet over the next year.

A welcome event kicked off the celebration Wednesday evening for the ship’s arrival to its homeport and the festivities continued Thursday morning in the Manhattan Cruise Terminal as the ship’s first guests boarded to sail.

Inaugural Event Features Special Blessing and Visit by Carnival’s First-Ever Godfather

Carnival Venezia received a special blessing by Father Enrique Salvo of St. Patrick’s Cathedral during the special welcome event, and acclaimed comedian and television host Jay Leno became the first godfather named to a Carnival ship. Leno also performed a special comedy show exclusively for Carnival’s event guests.

“By highlighting his own Italian heritage, Jay is helping us celebrate the Italian theming guests will experience when they cruise on this beautiful ship,” said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line. “We’ve heard great reviews from guests who sailed on the ship’s transatlantic crossing, and now I am so happy to welcome our first guests joining us from New York to enjoy what’s in store for them.”

The ceremony on Wednesday night also highlighted new entertainment programming and other concepts created for Carnival Venezia’s debut. The ship is the first to introduce “Carnival Fun Italian Style” that adds Carnival’s signature fun to the vessel’s beautiful Italian theming. Carnival Venezia is architecturally styled after its namesake, the city of Venice, Italy.

Guests Cut Ribbon and Embark on First Sailing from New York

Inside the Manhattan Cruise Terminal on Thursday morning, Duffy greeted guests with a special event to welcome them on board the new ship. Captain Claudio Cupisti and some of the first guests to board from New York joined Duffy to cut a ceremonial ribbon and officially begin embarkation.

Thursday’s departure from New York will take guests on a four-day sailing that includes a visit to Bermuda. This summer, the ship will alternate between sailing four-, five- six- and eight-day sailings to the Caribbean, Bermuda and ports in Canada and New England, including Saint John’s and Halifax.

Carnival Venezia’s positioning from New York builds on the popularity of Carnival’s past summer sailing deployments from the port by offering a longer deployment plan that features a more varied itinerary portfolio. Beyond the summer season, the ship will begin a new series on Sept. 29, 2023, that alternates between eight- to 12-day cruises to the Eastern Caribbean, Southern Caribbean and The Bahamas, visiting popular destinations like Saint Thomas, San Juan and Aruba, along with four of Carnival’s private destinations: Half Moon Cay, Princess Cays, Amber Cove and Grand Turk. In addition, select cruises will feature Miami as a port of call.

eTurboNews:

Affirming its long-term commitment to sustainability and conservation, Silversea Cruises has become the first tour operator to gain certification in environmental management in the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador. The leading ultra-luxury and expedition cruise line is the first operator to divert all waste from landfill disposal in the Galapagos. Silversea classifies and sorts all waste generated aboard Silver Origin®, before transporting all but organic waste out of the Galapagos Islands to the mainland to be recycled or processed in line with regulatory procedures. The cruise line receives a traceability document that verifies the responsible movement and disposal of all waste.

Collaborating with a local waste management company, Silversea offloads all waste generated on board Silver Origin in San Cristobal each week. Quantities of cardboard, cartons, plastic, and crushed glass are flown to the mainland for recycling. The remaining refuse is transported to Guayaquil on Ecuador’s mainland by marine transportation. Once in Guayaquil, the refuse is collected and recycled or processed, in line with environmental legislation and the best sustainability practices. Moreover, the waste management company uses refuse oil to fuel its incinerator. Everything is traceable.

“We are very proud to become the first tour operator to gain this certification in environmental management—a representation of our long-term commitment to sustainability and conservation in the Galapagos Islands,” said Gabriela Naranjo, Vice President and General Manager, Silversea Cruises Ecuador. “We started this initiative in 2020, entering into a partnership with an airline to transport recyclable waste out of the archipelago to the mainland. We are delighted to have taken the next step on our sustainability journey, diverting all waste from landfill in the Galapagos to dispose of it responsibly—with full traceability. This initiative is just one of the many examples of how Silversea is working to safeguard the fragile ecosystem of the Galapagos for future generations.”

These actions are part of Silversea’s comprehensive Environmental Management Plan, which, approved by the Ecuadorian Ministry of Environment, is designed to minimize any ecological impact on the Galapagos Islands. This plan builds on Silversea’s commitment to SEA the Future by sustaining the planet, energizing communities, and accelerating innovation.

THE SILVERSEA FUND FOR THE GALAPAGOS

With the aim of safeguarding the Galapagos Islands’ ecological integrity for future generations, Silversea launched the Silversea Fund for the Galapagos in 2019 to support a diverse selection of education and conservation projects each year. The fund strengthens the balance between humans and nature in the archipelago, as part of a long-term sustainability strategy. In addition to benefiting regional conservation efforts and enhancing their connection with this unique destination, the fund’s donors enjoy savings on Silversea’s voyages, as the cruise line matches guests’ contributions in the form of a Future Cruise Credit.

LOCALLY SOURCED PRODUCE

Silversea’s commitment to sustainability in the Galapagos extends to its culinary offering on board Silver Origin. If produce grows in the archipelago, the cruise line endeavors to buy it locally. Silversea has increased its sourcing of local ingredients in the Galapagos fivefold in recent years, working closely with independent farmers and suppliers on Santa Cruz and San Cristobal to nurture long-term solutions, strengthen the local economy, and support ongoing conservation efforts. Most proteins and approximately 40% of dairy products are sourced locally, as well as tomatoes, oranges, carrots, bell peppers, cucumbers, green beans, watermelons, rocket, and more. The consumption of local products also reduces the importation of products from the Ecuadorian mainland, thus reducing the risk of invasive species entering the islands.

It may seem like cruise ships discourage babies on board when finding out what things (even certain aged babies) are banned.

eTurboNews:

No need to post a “Baby On Board” sticker outside your cruise ship cabin door if that baby is not of a certain age. And forget about the bottle warmers, sterilizers, and baby monitors. Also no homemade baby food, please, and even for the older children, don’t bring inflatable pool toys. You say your dog or cat is your baby? Sorry, not allowed either. And just in case you were wondering, don’t bring helium balloons to any celebration you are planning while cruising.

Young Babies

Family-friendly cruises allow babies on board, but some ships specify the age of the babies, with some saying they can only be older than six months, and some with a 12-month-old requirement. Some cruise ships do not allow children at all, so take this into consideration when planning your trip. Some ships will be better suited to families and young children so ask your cruise agent for advice on the best cruise line for you.

Bottle Warmers and Sterilizers

Some cruise lines prohibit bottle warmers and sterilizers but may permit travel sterilizers. It is important to check with your cruise agent or provider before packing so you are sure there is no chance of it being on the list of banned items. Some cruise lines provide a number of sterilizers on board which can be hired as required.

Baby Monitors

Baby monitors are not permitted on many cruise lines, and the metal walls of many ships don’t allow the monitors to work properly anyway. On the cruise, it is likely you will either be in the same room or an adjoining room to your baby so there is no need to worry about being away from them or needing to monitor them as you will always be close by.

Parents are reminded that many cruise lines operate babysitting services at different times of the day. The support services offered vary hugely by cruise line, however. Some cruise lines do not supervise under 3s or might only offer childcare in a ‘kids club’ style environment. It is always best to check with your specialist cruise agent before booking.

Homemade Food

Pre-packaged, unopened snacks are allowed on a cruise, but any homemade food is banned. These limitations are related to concerns for food safety and contamination, as cruise lines are not able to provide refrigeration or storage for personal food items. One of the best things about cruising is there are lots of culinary options available on board so there is no need to bring food from home.

Inflatable Pool Toys

If your ship has a pool onboard, it may be tempting to bring along inflatable pool toys or noodles for young children, but these must be left at home. Most cruise lines only allow you to bring inflatable armbands for your little ones which must be deflated at the time of boarding. Other cruise lines will allow you to bring buoyancy vests on-board for children but this is not usually the case. It is always sensible to check with your cruise line before packing and leaving home.

Pets

Household pets like dogs and cats are not allowed on the majority of cruise lines, but service dogs (e.g. guide dogs/seeing eye dogs) are an exception. You will need to get permission from the cruise line before bringing a service dog on board, however, and the dog must be officially registered.

Helium Balloons

Anyone planning a celebratory cruise for a birthday, anniversary or other occasion should refrain from bringing balloons. Most cruise lines have banned inflatables of all kinds, but some offer a service to buy balloons from the ship and have them delivered to your room for the big day.

And Furthermore… No, No, and No

Irons and Steamers

Items which generate heat are prohibited from cruises as they are viewed as potential fire hazards. Anyone wanting to iron their clothes once onboard should check to see if their ship provides a public laundry room which includes irons and board for passengers. Dry cleaning and pressing services are also available on many luxury ships.

For those traveling on luxury cruise lines, many cabin grades will include a free laundry and pressing service. People staying in suites will often enjoy the services of a dedicated butler who will react swiftly to impromptu requests for a shirt or dress to be pressed before dinner for example.

Extension Leads and Cords

Most newer ships are designed with accessibility in mind, with lots of power sockets around every cabin, stateroom or suite. However, older ships may not be as well equipped. However due to fire and safety regulations, passengers are prohibited from bringing their own multi outlet extension cord or lead to boost the number of plugs in their cabin.

If needed, 220-volt cruise-compliant extension cords with USB charging ports are usually sold in the ship’s on-board shop. Check first with your cruise line to see if they prohibit extension cords or not and always err on the side of caution.

Alcohol

Most cruise lines don’t allow passengers to bring beer or liquor onboard, but they allow one bottle of wine per passenger. This must be in your carry-on bag rather than checked luggage and bottles must be unopened and sealed. Some lines charge a corkage fee, so be sure to check with your cruise line before packing your favorite wine.

If you are flying to meet your cruise ship, this adds another layer of complexity. Whilst you can carry alcoholic beverages in your hold luggage on an aircraft (under 70% proof) or buy alcohol at the duty free store at the airport, these items may well be confiscated when boarding your ship. All baggage is x-rayed before going on a cruise ship and often alcohol will be removed to meet the regulatory standards at specific ports of call.

Thanks to Panache Cruises for sharing banned cruise ship items – inanimate and living.

Leisure Travel Demand Normalizing from Post-Pandemic Surge

eTurboNews:

Recently released US Travel biannual forecast for travel to and within the United States through 2026, shows a normalized rate of growth in the domestic leisure travel sector after months of elevated demand.

Robust domestic leisure travel demand has been the driving force in the overall industry’s post-pandemic comeback. Though the surge experienced in the last year is starting to moderate, the travel industry expects this segment to remain resilient in coming quarters.

Domestic Leisure Travel

Domestic leisure travel is expected to remain strong, but with normalized rates of growth (around 2%) in 2023 and 2024. Volume is expected to grow faster year-over-year (YOY) than inflation-adjusted spending in 2024 and beyond.

Domestic Business Travel

Both volume and spending in domestic business travel is expected to grow—albeit more slowly—largely due to economic conditions. While business travel will continue recovering, with both volume and spending at double-digit growth in 2023, it is expected that growth in inflation-adjusted spending will be slower than volume in 2024 and beyond.

Business travel volume is not expected to recover to 2019 levels until 2025, while inflation-adjusted spending is not expected to recover within the range of the forecast.

International Inbound Travel

The inbound travel forecast was upgraded due to strong demand from the Canadian market, as well as stronger expectations from key overseas markets such as Brazil. Year-over-year, inbound travel volume is projected to grow 31% in 2023 and 18% in 2024, while inflation-adjusted spending is projected to grow 34% in 2023 and 19% in 2024.

Volume in this sector is projected to recover by 2025, while inflation-adjusted spending will not recover until 2026.

Policies to Grow Travel

US Travel report cites four key federal policy areas to accelerate growth across travel sectors:

• Improve the overall air travel experience through the Federal Aviation Administration reauthorization bill

• Lower US visitor visa interview wait times, which currently exceed an average of 500 days in top visa-requiring inbound markets

• Reduce Customs wait times at US airports and other ports of entry experiencing excessive delays

• Increase federal prioritization and focus on travel industry growth, as other countries have done

Travel is essential to growing the US economy and workforce, so the federal government must enact policies to ensure the industry is able to meet demand in coming years.

The tourist boat, names Hurricane had 15 tourists and 12 crew members on board. Three UK visitors are missing.

The yacht caught fire while cruising the beautiful Egyptian Red Sea coast.

Most likely, a short circuit in the boat’s engine room made the ship go into flames off the southern Red Sea resort town of Marsa Alam.

“An electrical short circuit in the boat’s engine room sparked the blaze.”

Marsa Alam is a town in south-eastern Egypt, located on the western shore of the Red Sea.

The town is seen as an emerging tourist destination and has shown significant developments following the opening of Marsa Alam International Airport in 2003

A search was launched to find the remaining three British tourists, whose identities were not revealed.

The boat was on a six-day cruise and due back on Sunday when the fire broke out approximately 25km (16 miles) north of Marsa Alam.

Images posted on social media showed a white motor yacht with the same name on fire at sea, with thick smoke billowing into the sky.

Ahmed Maher was watching the disaster unfold from the shore. He told Al Jazeera News the boat was about 9km from the beach.

On Thursday, a Russian tourist was eaten by a shark in the waters of the Egyptian Red Sea city of Hurghada.

eTurboNews:

This article will likely answer some of those nagging questions about what it’s like to go on a cruise, from prepping to what to expect while on board.

Before You Go

Get a Passport

All cruisers will need a passport in order to travel. Even British people touring the British Isles must hold a valid passport which conforms to the entry requirements of each destination visited.

Best Time to Book a Cruise

The best time to book a holiday is generally as far in advance as possible. The booking sweet spot, also known as the “wave season,” is from January to March. This is the period when a lot of popular cruises first go on sale and travelers can get the best deals, as fares often rise as the ship fills up. Cruise lines often announce itineraries 18 months or more in advance, so the best cruising deals can be found by planning a trip well ahead.

Planning a cruise holiday early is especially important if there are specialist needs in terms of the type of cabin or stateroom. There are usually only a very small number of family cabins or interconnecting cabins on-board even the most modern of cruise ships, so it pays to book early to secure the accommodation needed. The same is true for disabled or solo traveler cabins.

Types of Cruises

With so many options available, choosing the right cruise line can make all the difference. Consider traveling partners, budget, experiences desired from a cruise, and dream destinations. Whereas expedition cruises go to some of the most remote parts of the world, luxury river cruises are perfect for travelling through land-locked countries and for visiting famous cities.

Booking Shore Excursions

For the best selection and guaranteed availability, cruisers should book shore excursions before travel, although it may still be possible to book once onboard. Excursions are usually included free of charge on luxury and ultra-luxury cruises, which is one of the main benefits. Always compare the total cost of the cruise and not the initial fare or ticket price.

What Kind of Clothes to Pack

These days, most cruise lines operate a casual dress code. Cruisers to warmer climates tend to opt for beach wear or shorts and t-shirts during the day and smart-casual wear in the evening. A few cruise lines will include a gala dinner as part of the onboard itinerary, where guests are invited to wear their finest clothes or dress to a specific theme. Travelers who are feeling unsure about the clothes they will need to pack for their cruise should speak to a leading cruise retailer.

Doing Laundry

Going along with what to pack, packing enough clothes for a long excursion is a difficult task for many. Luckily, cruisers are able to make use of onboard laundry services to get longevity from their luggage. Many cruise lines offer laundry services for passengers meaning they can re-wear their clothes and don’t have to worry about packing weeks’ worth of clothes. Such services are included free of charge on luxury cruise lines but are usually chargeable on lower tiered lines.

Arriving On Board

Checking In

Many cruise lines allow passengers to check in online and upload all of security details electronically. This is also where vaccine proof can be provided if required for the countries being visited. Many cruise lines have their own mobile phone apps to allow passengers to easily update this information. Once check in is done, cruisers are encouraged to simply unpack, sit back, and enjoy the experience.

Be Prepared for the Muster Drill

The muster drill is a mandatory safety exercise which all passengers will have to take part in after boarding their cruise. Under Maritime Law, each cruise line is required to hold a safety briefing before departing, the drill familiarizes all passengers and crew with the muster station. This means everyone onboard knows what to do in case of an emergency.

Paying for Things Onboard

Every cruise line handles onboard payments slightly differently. As a general rule purchases are made using a cruise card, a multipurpose credit card sized card which also acts as an ID and room key. Some lines will give passengers a bracelet which allows them to pay as well. Increasingly, mobile phone apps are allowing people to book chargeable aspects of their cruise too from restaurant reservations to cruise excursions. Mobile phone apps can also be used to operate cabin-based technology such as curtain blinds and televisions.

Entertainment Included

Typically with luxury and ultra-luxury cruises, all entertainment will be included within the cruise package with the exception perhaps of the casino (if available). Although popular on US cruise lines many smaller European ships will not feature a casino at all.

Getting Back From Shore Excursions

If a cruise-line organized excursion is booked, the ship will wait for passengers to return even if late. Otherwise, it is the passengers’ responsibility to get back to the ship before it departs. Always make a note of the ship’s contact details plus departure time and make sure when booking any non-cruise organized excursions to allow plenty of time to get back on the ship. Don’t risk the chance of being left behind.

Healthcare On Board

For any sea-sick or unwell passengers onboard a cruise, most ships will have a doctor or extensive medical facilities, just ask any cruise staff for help. Any urgent cases of injury or sickness will be airlifted off the ship if at sea. All passengers are encouraged to take sea sickness medication or wear travel wrist bands just in case the weather turns bad.

International Visitors Spent $17.3 Billion on US Travel in April

eTurboNews:

Data recently released by the National Travel and Tourism Office (NTTO) show that in April 2023 international visitors spent more than $17.3 billion on travel to, and tourism-related activities within, the United States, an increase of nearly 26 percent compared to April 2022 and marking the twenty-fifth consecutive month of year-over-year gains (when compared to the same month, previous year).

Conversely, Americans spent a record-setting $17.2 billion traveling abroad, yielding a balance of trade surplus of $83 million for the month—reversing a trend of seven consecutive months of balance of trade deficits for U.S. travel and tourism.

Revised data released by the Bureau of Economic Analysis (monthly trade data were revised back to 2018) suggest that international visitors have spent nearly $67.2 billion on U.S. travel and tourism-related goods and services year to date (January through April 2023), an increase of more than 45 percent when compared to 2022. International visitors have injected, on average, nearly $560 million a day into the U.S. economy year to date.

Composition of Monthly Spending (Travel Exports)

• Travel Spending

  • Purchases of travel and tourism-related goods and services by international visitors traveling in the United States totaled $9.7 billion during April 2023 (compared to $7.2 billion in April 2022), an increase of nearly 35 percent when compared to the previous year. These goods and services include food, lodging, recreation, gifts, entertainment, local transportation in the United States, and other items incidental to foreign travel.
  • Travel receipts accounted for 56 percent of total U.S. travel and tourism exports in April 2023.

• Passenger Fare Receipts

  • Fares received by U.S. carriers from international visitors totaled $3.1 billion in April 2023 (compared to $2.4 billion in the previous year), up 31 percent when compared to April 2022. These receipts represent expenditures by foreign residents on international flights provided by U.S. air carriers.
  • Passenger fare receipts accounted for 18 percent of total U.S. travel and tourism exports in April 2023.

• Medical/Education/Short-Term Worker Spending

Costa has returned to service in Asia with Costa Serena. Following two May departures around Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam, Costa Serena departed June 1 from Busan, South Korea, heading to Nagasaki and Yatsushiro, Japan. This is the first outbound cruise to resume in South Korea after the end of cruise travel restrictions.

“With the departure of Costa Serena from Busan, we celebrate a historic event for cruises in Asia. We are, in fact, the first company to resume outbound cruises dedicated to South Korea, and soon also to Taiwan, after the pause due to travel restrictions caused by the pandemic. It’s a very important moment for the recovery of the cruise industry in Asia. We achieved this significant result thanks to our historic presence in Asia and established relationship with local partners and institutions,” said Mario Zanetti, president of Costa Cruises.

From June to October 2023, Costa Serena will operate a program of “charter” cruises in Asia, in cooperation with local travel partners. The total number of cruises is 35: eight cruises in June and October 2023 will be dedicated to the South Korean market, while another 27 cruises are planned for the Taiwan market from July to October 2023.

The itineraries, lasting from four to seven days, include some of the most beautiful destinations in East Asia, particularly Japan, such as Otaru, Muroran, Hakodate, Aomori, Fukuoka, Sasebo, Nagasaki, Yatsushiro, Kagoshima, Naha, Ishigaki and Miyakojima. Departures are scheduled from the ports of Busan, Sokcho and Pohang in South Korea, as well as from Keelung and Kaohsiung in Taiwan.

Costa Serena is an Italian-flagged ship built by Fincantieri shipyard that entered service in 2007. It is 114,000 gross tons and can accommodate up to 3,780 guests. On board Costa Serena, guests are able to enjoy a wide range of Italian-style gastronomic and entertainment experiences enriched with a local touch.

Viking today announced voyages on its newest Nile River ship, the Viking Hathor, are now available for booking. Set to debut in 2024, the Viking Hathor will join the company’s growing fleet of purpose-built ships on the Nile River, which sail the popular 12-day Pharaohs & Pyramids itinerary. Demand in Egypt remains strong, with Viking’s 2023 season sold out and some sailings into 2025 already selling out.

“Egypt continues to be one of our most popular destinations,” said Torstein Hagen, Chairman of Viking. “As a country rich with history and culture, we are pleased to bring the Viking way of exploration to Egypt for our guests. With the addition of the Viking Aton this summer and the Viking Hathor next summer, we are looking forward to meeting the growing demand in the region.”

The news follows recent accolades for Viking’s river fleet in Egypt. In its first year of sailing, the Viking Hathor’s identical sister ship, the Viking Osiris, was named as one of the “Best New Cruises” in Conde Nast Traveler’s “2023 Hot List.” Additionally, TIME magazine featured both Giza and Saqqara on its “World’s Greatest Places of 2023” list, recommending sailing the Nile River with Viking. TIME notes that Viking is among the very few who stop in both Giza and the village of Saqqara, where excavation sites, like the megatombs of animal and human mummies, are active.

The Viking Hathor & Viking’s Growing Egypt Fleet

Hosting 82 guests in 41 staterooms, the new, state-of-the-art Viking Hathor is inspired by Viking’s award-winning river and ocean ships with the elegant Scandinavian design for which Viking is known. The Viking Hathor is the identical sister ship to the Viking Aton, which debuts in August 2023, and the Viking Osiris, which was named in 2022 by Viking’s first ceremonial godfather, the 8th Earl of Carnarvon. The sister ships feature several aspects familiar to Viking guests, such as a distinctive square bow and an indoor/outdoor Aquavit Terrace. In addition to the Viking Aton and the Viking Osiris, the Viking Hathor will join the other ships in the Egypt fleet, the Viking Ra and the MS Antares. In response to strong demand, Viking will have six ships sailing the Nile by 2025 with the addition of a new sister ship, the Viking Sobek, which is also under construction and will be delivered in 2025.

Viking’s Pharaohs & Pyramids Itinerary

During the 12-day Pharaohs & Pyramids itinerary, guests begin with a three-night stay at a first-class hotel in Cairo, where they can visit iconic sites such as the Great Pyramids of Giza, the necropolis of Saqqara (also known as “Sakkara”) and the Mosque of Muhammad Ali. Guests then fly to Luxor, where they visit the Temples of Luxor and Karnak before boarding a Viking river ship for an eight-day roundtrip cruise on the Nile River, featuring Privileged Access to the tomb of Nefertari in the Valley of the Queens and the tomb of Tutankhamen in the Valley of the Kings, and excursions to the Temple of Khnum in Esna, the Dendera Temple complex in Qena, the temples at Abu Simbel and the High Dam in Aswan, and a visit to a colorful Nubian village, where guests can experience a traditional elementary school. Finally, the journey concludes with a flight back to Cairo for a final night in the ancient city.

“Costa is looking forward to another outstanding cruising season this fall, and what better way to celebrate the start of summer than with a special promotion on our most popular cruises throughout the Mediterranean,” said Scott Knutson, vice president of sales and trade marketing for Costa Cruises North America.

“Costa’s Mediterranean cruises continue to attract travelers looking for memorable experiences while Cruising Italian Style, something we’ve been treating our guests to for 75 years.”

The best way to experience the Mediterranean is on a cruise line that was founded in Italy. Costa Cruises serves authentic Italian food the way real Italians like it — signature recipes from each region in the country, later dining times, ship-made mozzarella cheese and gelato, and venues that reflect the country. Guests can indulge in Italy’s most popular food and beverage brands, such as Aperol, Campari, Ferrari Trento, Frescobaldi wine and Caffé Vergnano coffee. North American guests can expect a truly international vacation experience from the only Italian-flagged cruise line, no matter where in the world they are sailing.

Travelers looking to make their vacation plans in advance can now book Costa Cruises departures from December 2024 through March 2025. A diverse selection of itineraries in the Mediterranean, Caribbean and United Arab Emirates are available, in addition to the new 2025 Around the World cruise that departs in December 2024 on a unique itinerary.

Mediterranean

Costa explores its backyard of the Mediterranean year-round, giving a unique experience in the winter months where the region’s rich history and cultures comes to life in a different way. The flagship Costa Toscana will set sail on weeklong cruises exploring Italy, France, Spain, the Balearic Islands and Sicily, with several extended calls giving guests more time ashore. The itinerary includes Savona, Italy; Marseille, France; Barcelona and Palma de Mallorca, Spain; Palermo, Sicily; and Civitavecchia/Rome, Italy.

Caribbean

The Caribbean is an ideal destination for sun and fun with golden beaches and crystalline waters. Costa Fortuna and Costa Fascinosa will each offer two different alternating seven-day itineraries that can be combined into a single two-week vacation. All calls are at least 10 hours to allow guests time to experience each island with ease.

Costa Fortuna will sail around the Caribbean’s Lesser Antilles. The first itinerary includes Guadeloupe, Tortola, St. Maarten, Antigua, St. Lucia and Martinique. The second itinerary includes Guadeloupe, Trinidad and Tobago, Grenada, St. Vincent, Barbados and Martinique.

Costa Fascinosa’s first itinerary is a full immersion in the Dominican Republic with extended port calls and a full day at Catalina, Costa’s exclusive island. Ports include La Romana, Amber Cove, Samana and Catalina Island, all in the Dominican Republic, along with Ocho Rios, Jamaica, and Grand Turk, Turks and Caicos. The ship’s second itinerary explores six of the Caribbean’s most beautiful islands, calling at La Romana, St. Lucia, Barbados, Guadeloupe, Antigua and the British Virgin Islands.

United Arab Emirates

The United Arab Emirates is an ideal destination to experience a warm winter, and Costa Smeralda will explore the region at this time. The weeklong cruises include a two-day call at Dubai, UAE, as well visits to Muscat, Oman; Doha, Qatar; and Abu Dhabi, UAE, where guests can experience ancient traditions juxtaposed against modern cities.

Around the World

The 2025 edition of the Around the World Cruise aboard Costa Deliziosa will circumnavigate the globe, exploring mostly in the southern hemisphere. The ship will visit South America’s Tierra del Fuego, Polynesia, New Zealand, Australia and South Africa. For the first time, the departure will be in December 2024, allowing guests to enjoy the holiday season on a cruise. New Year’s Eve in Rio de Janeiro will be an unforgettable experience, with a fireworks display from Copacabana Beach.

Three Holland America Line ships are set to explore the lush landscapes and natural wonders of Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific in 2024-2025. From unspoiled islands to cosmopolitan cities, Westerdam will spend the season Down Under, while Koningsdam and Zaandam each offer a longer Legendary Voyage to the South Pacific and Hawaii.

In October 2024 Westerdam sails a westwardly South Pacific crossing, followed by the iconic Australia Circumnavigation. From December 2024 through March 2025, the ship offers a series of 14-day departures roundtrip from Sydney, Australia, or between Auckland, New Zealand, and Sydney. Zaandam’s “Tales of the South Pacific” in September 2024 is from Vancouver, Canada, to San Diego, California, or roundtrip San Diego, while Koningsdam’s “Hawaii, Tahiti and Marquesas” in February 2025 is roundtrip from San Diego.

“Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific are iconically beautiful locations, but they have so much more to offer which is why they remain high on the bucket list of travelers who are looking to see the world with the ease of a cruise,” said Beth Bodensteiner, Holland America Line’s chief commercial officer. “The Australia Circumnavigation itinerary is the most in-depth immersion a cruiser can have of the continent, and many of our Legendary Voyages make it possible to visit distant destinations from a North American homeport. These cruises are among some of the most notable we offer.”

Legendary Voyages Linger Longer

Holland America Line’s extended Legendary Voyages range from 25 to 59 days and combine the ceremony of a Grand Voyage with itineraries that feature a comprehensive collection of ports that enrich the experience in each destination. Most of Holland America Line’s Legendary Voyages sail roundtrip or to/from a North American homeport, allowing travelers to see the world from their doorstep with a convenient domestic flight and easy embarkation.

Guests enjoy overnight calls at Freemantle (Perth), Australia, and Hobart, Tasmania, along with a late-night departure from Adelaide. Beyond Australia, the ship will call at Komodo Island.

All itineraries include scenic cruising in Fiordland National Park, and select dates also include Milford Sound.

Oceania Cruises, the world’s leading culinary- and destination-focused cruise line, is proud to announce that Chef Alexis Quaretti, Senior Culinary Director, has been inducted into the prestigious echelons of the Maîtres Cuisiniers de France. Quaretti joins Oceania Cruises’ Vice President of Culinary Eric Barale, who served as Quaretti’s godfather into the program. As such, Oceania Cruises is the only major cruise line to boast two Master Chefs of France.

The association of Master Chefs of France was established in 1951. Its goal is to support and promote French culinary arts around the world. This mission is embodied by the chef members, as they are ambassadors of French cuisine and culture and are responsible for relaying this heritage to their apprentices.

“It’s truly remarkable to have two Master Chefs of France leading our culinary team,” said Frank A. Del Rio, President of Oceania Cruises. “Chef Eric and Chef Alexis are both long-standing members of the culinary team, Eric being one of the first members of Oceania Cruises’ culinary family and Alexis joining us shortly after in 2004. The palpable kinship and passion throughout the culinary team prove that Oceania Cruises not only serves The Finest Cuisine at Sea® but also has the finest culinary team at sea.”

“Being inducted into the Master Chefs of France is truly one of the biggest honors of my career, and I sincerely look forward to being part of this prestigious organization,” said Alexis Quaretti, Senior Culinary Director at Oceania Cruises. “I have always been proud to represent French culinary ideals and am lucky to be able to bring the best of the best to Oceania Cruises. I would like to thank my friend and colleague Chef Eric Barale for being my godfather throughout the process and providing me with constant guidance and advice throughout my career.”

Driven by the desire to make Oceania Cruises a destination for pleasure-seekers in search of one-of-a-kind experiences, Quaretti has created a menu of universal world flavors with his own French expertise and unique fondness for diverse products. His ever-changing menus celebrate the freshest ingredients and are inspired by his home country of France as well as his world travels.

As the line’s recipe development manager, Quaretti has designed, made and tested every dish served on an Oceania Cruises’ ship. He and his talented team create approximately 300 new recipes each year to constantly revitalize and reinvigorate the onboard menus.

New President Carnival UK and P&O Cruises Named

eTurboNews:

Carnival Corporation & plc has announced the appointment of Paul Ludlow as Carnival UK president in addition to his leadership role for P&O Cruises.

In his new consolidated position, Ludlow will assume all commercial and operational responsibility for Carnival UK which includes P&O Cruises and Cunard globally. New Cunard president Katie McAlister, who joins the company in August, will report to Ludlow.

As part of this leadership change, Sture Myrmell will be leaving the business after a long and illustrious career with the company.

Commenting on the changes, Carnival Corporation & plc president, CEO and chief climate officer Josh Weinstein said: “Paul is a 21-year veteran of the company with far-reaching experience across every commercial department and multiple brands in our portfolio of world-class cruise lines. That deep expertise, coupled with Paul’s proven leadership and track record of outstanding results, make him the clear choice to support our entire UK organization and to drive our return to strong profitability.”

Weinstein added: “I would also like to thank Sture for 30 years of dedicated service. From his start in our company as an officer aboard Cunard, to becoming President, P&O Cruises – Australia, to coming full circle and ultimately leading Carnival UK including the venerable Cunard brand, Sture’s dedication and contributions to our company have been significant. We wish him well.”

Carnival UK & P&O Cruises president Paul Ludlow said: “There has never been a more auspicious time for our two brands. P&O Cruises continues to deliver outstanding success and is clearly at the forefront of contemporary, mainstream holidays.

“Aligned with global talent including Gary Barlow and Nicole Scherzinger, as well as credible, authentic partnerships such as the recent BAFTA Television Awards sponsorship, the future of the brand could not be brighter.

“Next year will be a momentous one for Cunard with the arrival of our new ship and our fourth Queen, Queen Anne, which will once again shine the spotlight on this exceptional brand with its rich legacy. I am confident that the arrival of Katie McAlister to lead the Cunard team will build on the demand for Cunard voyages in the UK and across the world.”

Ludlow’s role is effective from June 1, 2023.

After three years of construction, today, the reimagined Nassau Cruise Port opens its doors to cruisers sailing to Nassau, the vibrant capital city of the archipelago.

Featuring a sixth berth and new terminal building, the revitalised port is now home to a Junkanoo museum, event and entertainment spaces, a 3,500-seat amphitheatre, a living coral exhibit, local stores and new food and beverage facilities.

“The new Nassau Cruise Port offers a whole new experience for cruise visitors,” says the Honorable I. Chester Cooper, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, Investments & Aviation. “Not only will Bahamian culture shine through all aspects of the port but the completion of the project marks a great milestone in ushering a new era for tourism in downtown Nassau, as well as a beautiful welcome for the millions of cruisers who disembark here each year.”

With support from Junkanoo experts Arlene Nash Ferguson and Percy “Vola” Francis, the Nassau Cruise Port Junkanoo Museum is an immersive experience, sharing the story of the destination’s national cultural festival. Authentically Bahamian products are on display across 40 retail spaces at the port, including local businesses such as Bahama Hand Prints, Bamboo Shack, and much more.

“We anticipate our traffic numbers for 2023 to exceed pre-pandemic levels with about 4.2 million visitors.”

Mike Maura, Port Director for Nassau, added: “Our growth trajectory is quite promising. In 2019, which was the busiest year for us to date, we had 3.85 million visitors. For 2024, we already have 4.5 million confirmations.”

Earlier this year, the Nassau Cruise Port set a record-breaking passenger arrival, welcoming 28,554 cruise visitors in one day – a testament to how the cruise industry is an important component to The Bahamas’ economy. The new and improved port provides entrepreneurial opportunities for Bahamians in addition to benefiting local businesses, shops and restaurants.

In celebration of the grand opening, the Nassau Cruise Port will be hosting a handful of private events on site as well as a “Cruise Passenger Day Party” on May 27, 2023, inviting passengers to explore the new facilities complete with Junkanoo rushouts.

Digital Dominates US Summer Travel

eTurboNews:

Summer travel is set to explode, with 85% of adults planning to travel this summer, up 5% from last year’s post-pandemic high. As millions of Americans head online to research and book their summer travel, industry experts today released the results of a consumer survey that examines the digital preferences and behaviors of US consumers.

The survey provides new proof that digital dominates travel planning, but not necessarily in the ways that brands may expect. Nearly 8 in 10 (78%) Americans always or frequently research and book at least some portion of their trips online. And 44% research and book the entirety of their travel plans online, from airlines to hotels to activities. Once they hit the road, half (48%) of Americans say they rely heavily on mobile travel apps.

High earners making more than $150,000 a year are even more likely to rely on digital channels for planning, with 83% always or frequently researching and booking online. Almost half (49%) lock in every piece of their trip online before departure.

Income aside, the majority of travelers (57%) would pay a premium for a guaranteed flawless digital experience. They’re more interested in practical enhancements like interface/navigation improvements (23%) and technical stability and reliability (17%) over buzzy features like AI chatbots (7%) and augmented reality (6%).

The survey of 1,500 U.S. consumers, conducted online in May 2023, is the latest in a research series that addresses key questions in the travel digital experience:

• Does the digital experience enhance or detract from the overall travel experience? Three-quarters (75%) of Americans surveyed say that digital makes the travel experience better. But some travel sites fare better than others. Hotel sites rank highest for digital experience, while car rental sites score lowest among travelers.

• How common are bad digital experiences, and what is at stake? Travelers have low tolerance for digital struggles and are one click away from booking elsewhere. More than half (55%) say they are likely to book with another travel provider when they are frustrated with a site or app. With nearly 21% of respondents always or frequently struggling when booking or researching online, there is a significant opportunity for travel providers to improve the digital experience they deliver to customers.

• What makes for a good travel experience? According to another recent survey, the #1 factor to ensure a great digital experience in 2023 is the ability to “quickly accomplish what I came to do” — a priority for 81% of Americans. However, only 26% of US consumers describe the digital experience as “simple,” with 21% saying the experience is “stressful” or “difficult.

Digital properties are the most prevalent way customers make travel decisions and transactions, so travel brands can’t afford any digital missteps. The research continues to show that customers are loyal to experiences, not brands, and they’re searching for brands to do the basics really well – even more than ones that offer fancy new features. With so many trips almost entirely planned online in advance, brands need to start channeling empathy for the digital consumer and proactively find and fix digital issues before they impact customers.

Solomon Islands Lifts All COVID-19 Entry Requirements

eTurboNews:

Effective immediately, the Solomon Islands has lifted all COVID-19 related requirements and travelers to the destination no longer need to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination or COVID-19 test.

However, passengers arriving into the destination will still be required to complete a health declaration card which will be made available onboard arriving aircraft or at point of entry into the destination.

Tourism Solomons CEO (acting), Dagnal Dereveke said the announcement by the Ministry of Health & Medical Services (MHMS) would significantly enhance the appeal of the Solomon Islands to those travelers who might have been deterred by previous restrictions.

“The decision to drop COVID-related entry requirements showcases the Solomon Islands as a welcoming and traveler-friendly destination, it demonstrates our commitment to facilitating tourism and highlights our confidence in having managed the COVID-19 situation effectively,” Mr Dereveke said.

However, he said the destination would not be letting its guard down.

“During the pandemic, which saw the Solomon Islands close its border for more than 800 days, Tourism Solomons worked closely with the Ministry of Culture & Tourism (MCT) to proactively promote safety and service excellence across the tourism sector,” he said.

“This involved introducing health and safety guidelines promoting hygiene facilities, maintaining cleanliness, monitoring activities and educating our people.

“Our main aim now is to continue to train our local tourism industry workforce to ensure they deliver a safe, healthy environment and experiences for our visitors.”

Mr Dereveke said the timing for the MHMS announcement was even more relevant given in just a few months’ time the Solomon Islands will be hosting thousands of athletes, support staff and spectators attending the 2023 Pacific Games taking place in November.

IMEX to Debut New Brand at IMEX Frankfurt 2023

eTurboNews:

One of the first things IMEX Frankfurt attendees will notice online and when they arrive at the show at Messe Frankfurt next week is that some serious shape-shifting has taken place.

The IMEX team has been working hard behind the scenes for nearly 18 months to design and debut a new visual treatment – a brand refresh – set to go live on Monday 22 May.

Scrutiny of honest critics

The brand review process was conducted by IMEX’s talented inhouse design team led by Design Manager, Anna Gyseman. Gyseman was a seminal member of the team that launched Grazia magazine into the UK market. As ‘honest critics’ she successfully recruited ex-colleagues Tony Chambers, former Editor and Creative Director of Wallpaper magazine; Suzanne Sykes, award-winning Creative Director, Graphic Designer and Brand Innovator; and Jonathan Clayton-Jones, Creative Director at the Telegraph Group.

Prior to the redesign, IMEX, like many companies before it, felt its existing identity no longer reflected the company or its live show experiences. Extensive workshopping with staff revealed a strong loyalty to some aspects of the old brand, however, it was agreed those elements representing people (the classic dots) were a legacy to be built on, not thrown away.

Carina Bauer, IMEX Group, CEO explains: “The minute the design team presented the ‘winning’ concept to our staff, we knew they’d nailed it. In clean, contemporary pastel colours derived from our heritage brand, the design embodies the heart, purpose, and business value IMEX stands for. It captures our belief in the positive power of people from all over the world meeting eye to eye, face to face and shaking hands on a business deal or new friendship.

“As with all good designs we tried to ‘break it’ but it stood up to all our tests. It works brilliantly as part of our show experiences and on our websites, signage and more,” Bauer adds.

Inclusive design thinking

Using the latest inclusive design principles, the team created a soft brown tone affectionately called ‘IMEX biscuit’ for use instead of classic white as a background colour. This non-stimulating, neurodiversity-friendly colour makes readability easier for a broader range of people.

First ever sonic logo

Given the importance of online expression for a global brand, IMEX also has a unique sonic logo for the first time. Developed with the help of Brighton, UK-based Buff Motion, the soundtrack cleverly builds anticipation of people coming together for a big event and knowingly embraces the fact that humans the world over celebrate community in the same way – with their hands and voices. See link here.

Carina Bauer sums up: “We’ve brought our brand to life in various ways throughout the show – the atrium at Messe Frankfurt is the focal point for many of our ‘hero’ pieces. Next week’s IMEX Frankfurt is a living showcase for the new look IMEX and we look forward to seeing how people react!”

IMEX’s Design Manager, Anna Gyseman and UX Designer, Oli Bailey will share insights into the design process and journey behind the new branding in: IMEX: Behind the curtain – Event design and measurement on Thursday 25 May at IMEX Frankfurt.

Last Thursday, at loan Depot park, the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau (GMCVB) hosted its annual State of the Tourism and Travel Industry presentation and shared that Greater Miami and Miami Beach, renowned for its cultural diversity, stunning beaches, cutting-edge culinary establishments and thriving arts and culture offerings, witnessed another year of unprecedented travel growth.

According to Miami-Dade County’s official destination marketing organisation, the statistics below confirmed what was expected to be a successful 2022 season:

• Greater Miami and Miami Beach welcomed more than 26.5 million visitors in 2022.
• This increased number of travellers reached into their purses and generated higher levels of spending ─ upwards of an estimated $20.8 billion ─ marking an 8% increase over 2021.
• More hotel guests accounted for the 17.1 million hotel room nights sold in 2022, representing an increase of 12.7% compared to 2021.

“We strongly believe that these 2022 results can be attributed to our destination’s all-star line-up of attractions, amenities, dining, accommodations and the tireless work of industry partners,” said David Whitaker, president and CEO of the GMCVB. “But the numbers by themselves don’t tell the whole story of what sustained success in this industry means. Tourism fuels job growth and economic vitality resulting in quality-of-life benefits as a result of visitor taxes that support everything from arts and culture to healthcare and transportation.”

The industry recovery that began in 2021 carried over into 2022 with sustained room bookings at record levels. At the forefront of travel, Miami International Airport (MIA) served more than 50.6 million travellers and welcomed new carriers including Southwest Airlines, JetBlue and Spirit Airlines. Despite challenges posed by international travel restrictions and extended visa wait times, Greater Miami and Miami Beach experienced a resurgence of its traditional international markets. The rebound in the international overnight visitor market highlighted a steady growth rate of 2.7% in 2022.

The cruise market made a triumphant return with a surge in guest volume that began in the summer, rebounding to 2019 levels.

Cumulatively, international visitors comprised 25% of the overnight market, with 4.7 million visitors, contributing to 29% of tourist expenditures.

“As we navigate the ever-changing landscape of the travel and tourism industry, 2022 serves as a powerful reminder of the appeal of our destination. The return of the international visitor has been key to our destination’s success,” said Bruce Orosz, GMCVB board chair. “With the reactivated GMCVB international office network spanning 50 cities in 53 countries, we’ve galvanized key resources to promote international travel to Greater Miami and Miami Beach. Innovation and collaboration are critical moving forward as we compete among global destinations to remain the business, leisure, conference and meetings location of choice for visitors from around the world.”

The meetings and conventions sector also experienced significant growth, with bookings filling the destination’s iconic Miami Beach Convention Centre (MBCC) and surrounding hotels. Year to date, the GMCVB has worked to confirm 386 conventions and meetings, locking in 239,218 total room nights. For 2023, meetings and conventions of note include Bitcoin North America, Machine Learning and Systems, LE/Miami: This is Beyond, Florida International Medical Expo (FIME), American Black Film Festival and the American Vein and Lymphatic Society. Representatives from the Professional Convention Management Association (PCMA, Jan. 10 – 13) and Exp Realty (Oct. 28 – Nov. 1, 2024, and Oct. 20 – 23, 2025) both made onsite announcements that their organizations have selected the MBCC for future conventions.

Notably, Greater Miami and Miami Beach’s hotels not only sold more rooms in 2022 but also exceeded 2021 by 13%. Moreover, hotel daily rates increased 14%, indicating a willingness among visitors to invest in unparalleled hospitality and luxury experiences. The increase in room sales and record-high hotel rates contributed to an increase in gross hotel revenue of 29%.

Unparalleled hospitality experiences include exquisite dining and thanks to publications like the Florida Michelin Guide, which debuted in 2022, and most recently bon appétit magazine naming Miami its Food City of the Year, Greater Miami and Miami Beach’s dining scene is generating unprecedented buzz.

Throughout the state of the industry event, the GMCVB showcased several new initiatives, including expanded multicultural tourism and development efforts, the Miami Begins With Me training programme, Rainbow Spring and the popular Miami Temptations programs. These initiatives aim to raise awareness of the destination’s diverse heritage neighbourhoods, create an authentic and welcoming experience for all visitors and provide promotions and savings at top eateries.

IMEX Frankfurt - Leading Indicator of Event Industry’s Health

eTurboNews:

IMEX Frankfurt, taking place next week from 23 to 25 May, is set to welcome almost 3,000 exhibiting companies representing over 100 countries and more than 3,500 global buyers.

With strong demand from across the world and a significant bounce back from Asia, the 2023 IMEX show floor will offer a snapshot of the global event industry’s growth curve, most salient trends and future developments.

A gathering of the global community

One of the differences compared to 2022 is the long-awaited return of Asia. With restrictions lifted, most of Asia is clearly on a return to international form. This will be most evident on the show floor where Indonesia, Taiwan, India, and Sri Lanka are all exhibiting. They are joined by Thailand, Malaysia and Hong Kong who are also set to deliver major press announcements. Newcomer Sarawak, the largest of Malaysia’s 13 states, will have its own stand for the first time and will also be joined by the region’s Tourism Minister.

Destinations, venues and suppliers from all corners of the world will line up for business next week, with strong representation from Europe, including Germany, France and Spain; North & South America – including Brand USA which is exhibiting for the first time, while Boston and Georgia have both increased their presence.

International hotel groups plus smaller boutique hotels will be showcasing their venues, with many introducing new service offerings or properties. Some big names have increased their presence for 2023 including Accor, IHG Hotels & Resorts, NH Hotels and Radisson.

Doing business remains at the heart of the show and thousands of appointments have already been booked. Buyers can now download the app, sponsored by Monaco Convention Bureau, which allows them to plan their time at the show and offers free lead scanning for buyers and exhibitors for the first time.

The IMEX team welcome you to IMEX Frankfurt.

Education sessions rip up the rulebook

The show’s learning program has been stepped up with fresh formats, topical subjects and speakers who rip up the rulebook. This includes the Encore Ideation Station where the team will turn traditional education sessions on their head with snappy seven-minute presentations. They promise a ‘super-secret finish to the workshops’. Intrigued? Curious IMEX attendees are invited to meet them at the show and find out more.

The Google Experience Institute (Xi) CoLabs is a series of mini design-thinking sprints shining a light on the key topics the global Xi community is currently exploring. This is a unique opportunity to experience Google’s forward-thinking and highly inclusive collaboration models and techniques. Megan Henshall, global events strategic solutions lead at Google, explains: “Being champions for good in the world, using our discipline to promote cultural shifts that are going to put us all in a better place – we can do that. This is the stuff that’s going to attract the next generation.”

Headline speakers are lined up to share some solid, practical advice, designed to both power professional and personal development. Best-selling author, leadership and sales training expert Christopher Kai’s session Science-based sales strategies made simple will see him zone in on how to be more successful in sales by building rapport through science-based storytelling.

Headliner Alex Brueckmann works at the intersection of strategy, leadership, performance and empowerment. His sessions at the show – in both English and German language – focus on moving beyond purpose to impact. Alex explains: “For an organization’s purpose to have meaning, it must go beyond simply making money or providing jobs. The answer lies in shifting the focus from purpose to impact.”

All these sessions form part of the extensive, free program of 150 educational and networking events at IMEX Frankfurt. The learning journey starts with education for specialist audiences the day before the show, on Monday 22 May, followed by six tracks of general learning that run Tuesday to Thursday on the show floor’s Inspiration Hub. Attendees can also search and personalize education choices according to CMP/CE credits or CSEP approval.

Carnival Cruise Line announced today that the Carnival Venezia will homeport at Port Canaveral beginning in late 2024.

“Our partnership with Carnival Cruise Line has a long history, and the addition of the Carnival Venezia takes our tradition to another level,” stated Capt. John Murray, Port Canaveral CEO.

“The expanded lineup of homeported ships demonstrates the trust Carnival has in our Port’s ability to contribute to their continued success. We are honored to be part of this journey.”

As Carnival Cruise Line prepares to debut its new ‘Carnival Fun Italian Style’ experiences on its latest addition to the fleet, Carnival Venezia, the cruise line is opening future sailings for the ship that include a series of departures from Port Canaveral, Fla. as the ship heads south for winter of 2024-25 like millions of other Northeasterners, before returning to New York in the spring of 2025.

“The sailings we’re opening today will allow us to share this new signature fun with more guests and bring another truly dynamic offering to one of our most popular homeports,” said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line. “Carnival Venezia’s seasonal operation in Port Canaveral will bring our deployment there to five vessels and give our valued Carnival guests another great option when sailing from Central Florida.”

Carnival Venezia will reposition from New York with a 12-Day Southern Caribbean Carnival Journeys Cruise that departs on Dec. 6, 2024 and visits St. Thomas; St. Croix; Aruba; Curacao and Grand Turk and arrives to Port Canaveral on Dec. 18, 2024. The ship will embark its first guests from Port Canaveral on the same day and depart for a four-day Bahamas cruise, visiting Nassau and Freeport, to kick off its winter series. It will then operate 15 seven-day cruises, rotating itineraries and visiting a variety of popular destinations, as well as sailing two special 14-day Carnival Journeys cruises. After its seasonal deployment in Florida, the ship will return to New York in the spring of 2025.

• 14-Day Southern Caribbean Cruise departs Feb. 23, 2025 and visits Grand Turk; Aruba; Curacao; Cartagena, Colombia; Colon, Panama; Limon, Costa Rica and Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands.

The 5,000-guest Carnival Venezia will soon embark its first guests on a 15-day Carnival Journeys transatlantic sailing May 29, 2023 from Barcelona and arrive to her new home at the Manhattan Cruise Terminal in New York City. The ship’s first cruise from New York, a four-day cruise to Bermuda, is set for June 15, 2023. From its New York homeport through December 2024, the ship will operate 10 different cruise durations and 22 unique itineraries featuring visits to 25 ports across 14 countries.

Carnival Venezia is currently undergoing an enhancement project in Spain and will be the first ship to showcase ‘Carnival Fun Italian Style.’ It will debut a slate of fun concepts and experiences influenced by the ship’s Italian design, since it was originally built under Carnival’s sister brand, Costa Cruises, and boasts beautiful architectural features inspired by Venice, Italy that make the ship a unique addition to the Carnival fleet. Guests will find the same warm hospitality on Carnival Venezia that Carnival is known for fleetwide.

Disney Magic of Disney Cruise Line is scheduled to make its inaugural call to Dominica on Tuesday May 16th, 2023. The vessel is scheduled to call in at the Roseau Cruise Ship Berth. This will be Disney cruise line’s second call to the island, with Disney Fantasy having called in July 2022. In commemoration of the ship’s first call to Dominica, a welcome ceremony to include plaque exchange, with the ship’s captain and crew, will be held aboard the ship.

The 83,969-ton vessel has a passenger capacity of approximately 2,400, served by 950 crew members. The passenger type is family oriented, thus efforts to cater to the interest of the passengers, includes a kid’s corner with an array of activities for the children’s involvement. Other on shore activities organized by the Discover Dominica Authority (DDA) will include performances showcasing Dominica’s culture, dress, and heritage. A mini cultural parade along with other cultural acts will be coordinated by Dominica’s cultural specialist, Mr. Raymond Lawrence. Passengers of Disney Fantasy will also be serenaded by live performances from local bands which will be scheduled at intervals throughout the day.

The island’s cruise stakeholders to include Craft & Souvenir Vendors, Taxi Operators and Tour Operators, are all in gear for rendering exceptional services to the passengers and crew of Disney Magic. It is expected that Dominica’s major cruise sites such as Emerald Pool, Trafalgar Falls and Mero Beach will be heavily visited by cruise passengers.

Dominica’s cruise industry is on the rebound after a devasting blow from the COVID-19 pandemic, which resulted in the cessation of cruise activity for a sixteen-month period from March 2020. Based on preliminary data, the season yielded 244,265 visitors, exceeding the 2021/22 season by 71%. This performance also surpassed the pre-pandemic season (2019–2020) by 29%.

DDA looks forward to the 2023/2024 cruise season and solicits the cooperation of all tourism stakeholders in ensuring a welcoming and enjoyable experience for the cruise visitors for the upcoming cruise season. The Government of Dominica will continue its effort in promoting Dominica as a desirable cruise destination to increase cruise calls to Dominica.

Travel and Tourism Post-COVID Recovery Continues in 2023

eTurboNews:

According to the latest industry data, an estimated 235 million tourists traveled internationally in the first three months of 2023, with worldwide traveler numbers reaching 80% of pre-pandemic levels. 960 million people had traveled abroad last year, representing a recovery to 66% of pre-pandemic figures.

The report released by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) also highlighted that international tourism receipts hit the $1 trillion mark in 2022, growing 50% in real terms compared to 2021, driven by the rebound in international travel. Global visitor spending reached 64% of pre-pandemic levels, it added.

“The start of the year has shown again tourism’s unique ability to bounce back. In many places, we are close to or even above pre-pandemic levels of arrivals. However, we must remain alert to challenges ranging from geopolitical insecurity, staffing shortages, and the potential impact of the cost-of-living crisis on tourism, and we must ensure tourism’s return delivers on its responsibilities as a solution to the climate emergency and as a driver of inclusive development,” the UNWTO Secretary-General said.

Currently, international tourism is on track to make a full recovery, with twice as many people traveling during the first quarter of 2023 than in the same period last year.

The Middle East saw the strongest recovery and was the only region that exceeded its 2019 arrivals (+15%). It was also the first region to recover to pre-pandemic numbers in a full quarter, according to the report. Europe reached 90% of its pre-pandemic levels, driven by strong intra-regional demand. Meanwhile, Africa and the Americas were at 88% and 85% of their 2019 levels, respectively.

Asia and the Pacific accelerated its recovery to 54% of pre-pandemic levels, the UN agency wrote, adding that the upward trend is set to accelerate now that most destinations, including China, have reopened.

The Q1 2023 results are in line with UNWTO’s forward-looking scenarios for the year which project international arrivals to recover 80% to 95% of pre-pandemic levels. UNWTO’s Panel of Experts expressed their confidence in a strong peak season (May-August) in the Northern Hemisphere, reflected in the latest UNWTO Confidence Index which indicates performance for the period is on track to be even better than 2022.

However, tourism’s recovery also faces some challenges. According to the UNWTO Panel of Experts, the economic situation remains the main factor weighing on the effective recovery of international tourism in 2023, with high inflation and rising oil prices translating into higher transport and accommodations costs. As a result, tourists are expected to increasingly seek value for money and travel closer to home. Uncertainty derived from the Russian aggression against Ukraine and other mounting geopolitical tensions, also continue to represent downside risks.

Marella Cruises’ Discovery sailed from Port Canaveral’s Cruise Terminal 5, kicking off a slate of 26 weekly sailings between now and November. The sailing of the Discovery is also Marella’s first from the United States.

“We are excited to extend a warm welcome Marella Cruises’ Discovery and honored that they’ve chosen to base their first homeport in the United States at Port Canaveral,” said Capt. John Murray, Port CEO. “Their decision to join us is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our team and only adds to our reputation as the world’s busiest port. We are proud to be associated with a high-quality brand as Marella and look forward to providing an exceptional customer experience for their guests.”

Marella is a division of TUI United Kingdom and Ireland and TUI World group. To that end, five flights will arrive weekly at Melbourne Orlando International Airport from the U.K. with roughly 1,500 British passengers weekly who will sail on each cruise.

In keeping with maritime tradition, Canaveral Port Authority Commissioner RADM Wayne Justice (USCG-Ret.) presented Marella Discovery Capt. Chris Douglass with a plaque welcoming the ship to Port Canaveral for the first time. The ship was escorted as she departed Port Canaveral out to sea with a traditional water gun salute led by Canaveral Fire Rescue’s “Fireboat 2,” and two tugboats provided by Seabulk and E.N. Bisso.

“It gives me a great amount of pride to welcome the Marella Discovery as Port Canaveral’s newest homeported vessel,” said Admiral Justice. “This exciting milestone marks a significant moment for our Port, and we look forward to welcoming passengers from around the world as they embark on unforgettable adventures from Florida’s Space Coast. We’re honored to have Marella Cruises as a valuable partner in our community.”

The Discovery will have varying itineraries on its “American Dream, Floridian Favourites and Sunshine State and Sands” programs that it offers with port-of-call visits set for the Ports of Charleston, S.C., New York City, Norfolk, Va., New Orleans, Key West, Miami, Tampa, Fort Lauderdale, and Freeport and Nassau, Bahamas.

Marella is now the sixth cruise line with at least one ship homeported at the Port, joining an impressive list of cruise lines that includes Carnival, Disney, MSC, Norwegian and Royal Caribbean.

The 866-foot-long Discovery has 915 cabins and has a gross tonnage of 69,130 tons. The ship also features a bevy of amenities as well, including an 800-seat Broadway Show Lounge, outdoor cinema, five-story atrium, mini-golf course, and rock-climbing wall to go along with seven restaurants and seven bars and an indoor and outdoor pool.

For its 2023 Alaska cruise season, Holland America Line will donate proceeds from its “On Deck for a Cause” event aboard ships in the region to Alaska Geographic, the nonprofit education partner of Alaska’s parks, forests, refuges and conservation lands. Holland America Line has six ships exploring the spectacular landscapes of Alaska from May through September 2023.

Called “On Deck for a Cause: Alaska’s Parks,” guests on all Alaska cruises will be invited to donate $25 to participate in a noncompetitive 5k fundraising walk aboard every sailing.

Participants receive an On Deck for a Cause T-shirt, wrist band and enjoy a reception following the walk. Funds raised through “On Deck for a Cause: Alaska’s Parks” will go to support education, science and research in Alaska’s parks.

“Not only do we love Alaska, but our guests can’t help but fall in love with everything that makes Alaska so spectacular, from its glaciers and wildlife to its cultural and natural beauty, which all directly benefit from the good work of Alaska Geographic,” said Michael Smith, senior vice president, guest experience and product development. “We are proud to support Alaska Geographic in their mission to make Alaska’s public lands more accessible to everyone and boost their work to preserve them for future generations.”

On every Holland America Line cruise to Alaska, the region’s incredible glaciers and natural landscapes take center stage. Holland America Line sails to Glacier Bay National Park more than any other cruise line and hosts a Glacier Bay National Park Ranger on board to help spot wildlife and explain the historic significance behind every sight. On every Alaska overland Cruisetour, guests explore Denali National Park for up to three nights, going in search of the “Big Five” (grizzly bears, caribou, moose, Dall sheep and wolves), river rafting, hiking or flightseeing with a chance to land on Denali.

“The funds raised through Holland America Line’s ‘On Deck for a Cause: Alaska’s Parks’ directly support Alaska Geographic’s mission to connect people with Alaska’s parks, forests, refuges, and conservation lands,” said Andy Hall, executive director, Alaska Geographic. “Their guests come to Alaska from around the world to see incredible places like Glacier Bay and Denali national parks. On Deck for a Cause gives them the opportunity to give back by supporting our mission while learning about the importance of stewardship of these public lands.”

Nearly half a million participants have joined in more than 8,400 walks aboard Holland America Line cruises since the inception of the “On Deck” program in 2006. Currently, On Deck for a Cause benefits the global humanitarian aid organization Direct Relief and has raised more than $550,000 for Ukrainian aid over the past 14 months. The remaining five ships in the Holland America Line fleet will continue to raise funds for Direct Relief with On Deck for a Cause.

Oceania Cruises, the world’s leading culinary- and destination-focused cruise line, last night christened its newest ship Vista at a glittering ceremony in Valletta, Malta.

The first of the line’s Allura Class vessels, the stunning 1,200-guest, all-veranda ship made her debut with a star-studded celebration headlined by her godmother, celebrated Italian-American chef, author, restaurateur and Emmy award-winning food personality Giada De Laurentiis, and an exclusive performance from legendary Grammy and Emmy award-winning musician Harry Connick, Jr.

“We have been eagerly awaiting this historic day as we christen our first new ship in more than ten years and pave the way for an exciting future,” said Frank A. Del Rio, President of Oceania Cruises. “The world-class experience of this beautiful ceremony perfectly aligns with Vista’s impeccable onboard experience, which features a stunning design, exceptional entertainment, top-notch service and innovative culinary delights. We are so thankful to our team members and partners worldwide who have worked tirelessly to bring us to Vista’s grand debut.”

At 791 feet (241 meters) long and more than 67,000 tons with capacity for 1,200 guests at double occupancy, Vista offers a market-leading staffing ratio with two crew members for every three guests. She also boasts the most spacious standard staterooms at sea, which measure more than 290 square feet, plus new Concierge Level Veranda Staterooms for solo travelers. Setting new standards for comfort and residential-style luxury, she features all-veranda accommodations. Vista’s elevated variety of onboard activities include eight bars, lounges and entertainment venues plus the luxurious Aquamar Spa + Vitality Center and Aquamar Spa Terrace.

“I am so honored to have been chosen as godmother of this incredible new ship and be a part of this glorious night in Malta,” said Giada De Laurentiis. “From amazing culinary experiences to thoughtful details at every turn, Vista is truly a dream ship. Cheers to this inaugural season and to everyone who sails aboard her.”

Continuing to elevate The Finest Cuisine at Sea®, Vista features 11 onboard culinary venues including three which are new to Vista. These include Aquamar Kitchen, offering an array of wellness-inspired dishes with a hint of indulgence; The Bakery at Baristas, serving tempting freshly baked pastries; and new signature restaurant, Ember.

With an emphasis on innovating for drinks, as well as all things culinary, Vista is also introducing The Casino Mixology Bar, a new concept for the line, focused entirely on the art of the cocktail.
As godmother, De Laurentiis will create two signature dishes to be served in Toscana, Oceania Cruises’ authentic Italian specialty restaurant evolved from rich family traditions, as well as The Grand Dining Room, the luxurious grand dame of the line’s culinary venues.

Guests at the christening ceremony were treated to the opening performance of “Into the Night,” Vista’s dance-centric theatrical show led by renowned “Dancing with the Stars” pro dancer and choreographer Britt Stewart, before De Laurentiis took the stage to officially name and christen Vista with the ceremonial Champagne bottle break across the ship’s hull. VIP attendees then enjoyed a concert by headliner and legendary live performer Connick, who delivered 60 minutes of non-stop entertainment. The spectacular evening ended with celebratory fireworks over Valletta’s historic harbor.

“I’ve been honored to perform at countless special occasions but have to say that celebrating this beautiful ship’s entry into service was extra special,” said Harry Connick, Jr. “Bon voyage, Vista.”
Following the seven-night roundtrip VIP christening cruise, Vista will sail her maiden voyage on May 13 from Rome to Venice before embarking on a sold out summer in the Mediterranean. In September, she will sail to Canada and New England before heading south for a series of winter itineraries exploring Mexico, Bermuda and the Caribbean from her homeport of Miami.

Vista’s 2024 summer season will see her sail a series of Grand Voyages in the eastern Mediterranean, Aegean and Adriatic Seas, visiting an intriguing array of iconic cities and smaller boutique ports throughout Italy, Turkey, Greece and the Holy Lands.

This is following a meeting with H.E. Abdulla Al Saleh, Undersecretary of Foreign Trade and Industry in the Ministry of Economy in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

They met recently at the UAE’s Ministry of Economy, which has oversight for tourism in the UAE, where they discussed areas for cooperation in tourism that will redound to the benefit of both countries and their citizens.

Minister Bartlett outlined that:

“We concluded that Jamaica and Dubai can collaborate in tourism.”

Dubai will support us in terms of MICE market development, logistics and technology and we will reciprocate in terms of resilience and sustainability, the building out of human capital programs, product development and marketing.”

In expressing his enthusiasm at the possibilities for collaboration in cruise tourism, Minister Bartlett noted that “Dubai Ports, one of the largest in the world with enormous capacity, is looking for partnerships across the world and Jamaica is a good place to start.”

A key matter that was also explored during the meeting was the possibility of establishing an outpost of the Jamaica-based Global Tourism Resilience and Crisis Management Centre (GTRCMC) in the UAE. This would mark the center’s latest satellite location, adding to its offices in countries including Kenya, Jordan and Canada.

The tourism minister indicated that further discussions will be held to formalize these arrangements through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) when both countries convene alongside other nations at COP 28 this November.

The Jamaica Ministry of Tourism and its agencies are on a mission to enhance and transform Jamaica’s tourism product, while ensuring that the benefits which flow from the tourism sector are increased for all Jamaicans. To this end it has implemented policies and strategies that will provide further momentum for tourism as the engine of growth for the Jamaican economy. The Ministry remains committed to ensuring that the tourism sector makes the fullest contribution possible to Jamaica’s economic development given its tremendous earning potential.

Viking today is celebrating the start of its second season in the Great Lakes, as the new purpose-built Viking Polaris arrived in Toronto for her first port of call in the region. The Viking Polaris joins her identical sister ship, the Viking Octantis, which began sailing in the Great Lakes for the 2022 season and returned to the region in April 2023. With two 378-guest expedition vessels now in the region, Viking has doubled its capacity in the Great Lakes for 2023. The ships will remain in the Great Lakes through September 2023, sailing all five lakes and a variety of itineraries that operate between Toronto and Duluth.

“We are proud to welcome both of our expedition ships to the Great Lakes. With historic canals that are engineering marvels, cities with thriving arts and culture and unmatched wilderness, this is a phenomenal region of North America that may be familiar to many—but few have had the opportunity to explore,” said Torstein Hagen, Chairman of Viking. “After our first full season of Great Lakes voyages in 2022, we are grateful for the warm welcome we received from each destination and look forward to introducing even more curious travelers to the region this season and in the years to come.”

Designed specifically to reach the Great Lakes, Viking’s expedition fleet brings the newest and most modern vessels ever to explore this region of North America, as well as a significant commitment to local tourism and economic development for the states of Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and the Canadian province of Ontario. Beginning this season, Viking will also call on the new port of Cleveland, Ohio, during the new 15-day itinerary, Great Lakes Collection.

To further develop the scientific enrichment program for its Great Lakes voyages, Viking has partnered with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory (GLERL), which conducts innovative research on the dynamic environments and ecosystems of the Great Lakes and coastal regions to provide information for resource use and management decisions that lead to safe and sustainable ecosystems, ecosystem services, and human communities. Viking’s expedition ships have also been designated official NOAA / U.S. National Weather Service weather balloon stations, from which regular launches are undertaken.

2023—2024 Great Lakes Voyages:

During Viking’s second season, the company is operating six key itineraries in the Great Lakes, including two new voyages.

Highlights include:

• NEW Great Lakes Collection (15 days; between Toronto and Duluth) – Join Viking for a unique expedition across the historic waterways of all five of the majestic Great Lakes. Experience culture-rich urban centers and admire the awesome power of thundering Niagara Falls. Explore the granite islands and sheltered inlets of Georgian Bay and traverse the famous Soo Locks. • NEW Canada & the Atlantic Coastline (16 days; between Toronto and Ft. Experience New York City’s expansive Central Park, an oasis in the middle of a bustling metropolis, and immerse yourself in the rich histories of Quebec City, Norfolk and Charleston.

• Undiscovered Great Lakes (8 days; Thunder Bay to Milwaukee) – Cross the width of Lake Superior between Duluth and the Soo Locks, exploring the Apostle Islands and Keweenaw Peninsula along the way. Hike along clifftop trails for sweeping views of the lake. Gain insight into the unique features and ecosystems of remote wilderness islands, and admire Kakabeka Falls, the “Niagara of the North.” Discover sea caves by kayak and step back in time as you stroll the quaint, car-free streets of Mackinac Island.

• Great Lakes Explorer (8 days; Milwaukee to Thunder Bay) – Discover the maze of granite islands that comprise Georgian Bay Biosphere Reserve while hiking and kayaking through its tranquil beauty and admiring sweeping vistas. Experience Victorian charm on Mackinac Island and venture into the boreal forests of Sleeping Giant Provincial Park on Lake Superior’s northern shore. • Niagara & The Great Lakes (8 days; between Toronto and Milwaukee) – From urban skylines to uninhabited islands, discover North America’s wilderness alongside renowned cultural attractions while cruising the striking waterways of the Great Lakes. Immerse yourself in the lakes’ compelling shipping history, experience the power of thundering Niagara Falls and keep watch for scores of migratory birds at Point Pelee. Led by a team of experts, explore sheltered bays and woodlands to uncover complex ecosystems and hidden treasures.

• Canadian Discovery (13 days; between New York and Toronto) – Unleash your inner explorer in the remote wilds of eastern Canada. Discover this region’s rich colonial past amid stunning natural settings. Admire the unparalleled beauty of the rugged coast of the Canadian Maritimes. Epstein’s Infamous Private Islands Will Become Luxury Resort

eTurboNews:

SD Investments LLC, an investment firm led by a prominent billionaire private equity executive Stephen Deckoff, announced on its website the acquisition of the islands of Great St. James and Little St. James in the United States Virgin Islands.

Two private Caribbean islands once belonged to a notorious American sex offender and financier Jeffrey Epstein who allegedly used them to sexually abuse young women and traffic children for years.

Epstein died in a Manhattan federal prison in 2019 while awaiting trial for sex trafficking. A decade earlier he was convicted for soliciting prostitution from a minor, for which he was registered as a sex offender. According to the prosecution, among his victims were girls possibly as young as 11 years of age.

Great St. James and Little St. James were on the market for over a year. They were sold for a combined total of $60 million, less than half of the original asking price of $125 million. The property boasts a mansion, several guest villas, a helipad, and numerous pools.

The islands now have been purchased by a prominent entrepreneur and investor who is planning to develop them into a luxury resort.

Stephen Deckoff, a resident of the US Virgin Islands, is worth $3 billion. He is a co-founder of private equity firm Black Diamond Capital Management, which manages $9 billion in assets.

“Mr. Deckoff plans to develop a state-of-the-art, five-star, world-class luxury 25-room resort that will help bolster tourism, create jobs, and spur economic development in the region, while respecting and preserving the important environment of the islands.” SD Investments announced in a statement.

Apparently acknowledging the islands’ loathsome past, SD Investment’s statement adds that “a significant portion of the sale proceeds” were to be paid to the government of the Virgin Islands under a previous settlement agreement between the government and Epstein’s estate.

Luxury cruise brand Cunard celebrated a momentous construction milestone today with the float out of Queen Anne at the Fincantieri Marghera shipyard in Venice, Italy.

The 249th ship to sail under the Cunard flag, Queen Anne officially touched water for the first time exactly 365 days before she will set sail on her maiden voyage to Lisbon on May 3, 2024.

Steeped in tradition, the float out is marked by a special ceremony where a ‘Madrina’ is named to offer blessings and best wishes for the ship, celebrating the flow of water into the ship’s dry dock.

Carnival UK President Sture Myrmell said: “We are delighted to celebrate this important milestone in the construction of Queen Anne. The float out ceremony marks the ship’s transition from her building dock to where she truly belongs – in the water. Today marks a significant moment for Queen Anne as we recognize the dedication by the master ship builders at Fincantieri to build a ship that reinforces our position as a world-famous luxury brand.”

Luigi Matarazzo, General Manager Merchant Ships Division of Fincantieri, stated: “Queen Anne is the third ship we have the pleasure to build for Cunard, a pillar in the history of British seafaring, with whom we share a real commitment to excellence.

Building a liner for this shipowner takes us back to our roots yet, at the same time, spurs us forward to the future in a spirit of determination to bring together tradition and innovation and further strengthen our longstanding relationship.”

The float out completes the first comprehensive phase of construction for Queen Anne, which now transitions to focus on building the luxury ship’s interiors.

Queen Anne

The design concepts for Cunard’s newest ship have been founded on heritage, craftmanship, style, storytelling, and innovation. The 113,000-ton, 3,000-guest Queen Anne, which spans 14 decks, will offer travelers several breath-taking moments, including the largest curated art collection at sea.

For more than 180 years, Cunard has constantly refined the definitive experience of ocean travel, and Queen Anne will be bursting with Cunard’s signature experiences, including world-class dining, exceptional entertainment, and luxurious accommodation.

Entering service in May 2024, Queen Anne will make up a remarkable quartet for Cunard alongside Queen Mary 2, Queen Victoria, and Queen Elizabeth. It will be the first time since 1999 that Cunard will have four ships in simultaneous service.
The float out ceremony follows September’s iconic keel laying, in which a coin was embedded into the ship’s keel by Captain Inger Thorhauge, alongside an original coin from the ship’s namesake’s reign, to mark the formal start of her construction.

Trinidad and Tobago Ministry of Tourism, Culture and the Arts (the Ministry) supports MSC Cruises in collaboration with Meridian Recruitment Agency Ltd. as they seek to recruit 200 suitably qualified nationals to be a part of the MSC Cruises team.

The Meridian Recruitment Agency will be leading the recruitment initiative to fill vacancies in the areas of Food and Beverage, Housekeeping, Entertainment, Guest Services and Galley Jobs on behalf of MSC Cruises.

The Ministry remains committed to fulfilling its mandate of working with industry stakeholders to boost economic recovery and create employment opportunities within the tourism sector for citizens.

This recruitment drive follows the successful completion of the Royal Caribbean Group’s (RCG) Seafarer Recruitment Initiative held last year. As a result of in-person and virtual interviews conducted by the RCG team, close to 1000 applicants were offered jobs in a wide range of categories that span from entry level up to managerial. Trinidad and Tobago citizens are now employed on Royal Caribbean ships in areas including Medicine, Bar Utility, Food and Beverage, Housekeeping, Restaurant and Guest and Hospitality Services.

Similarly, citizens with varying levels of experience and training in tourism and hospitality services and food and beverage management will have an opportunity to explore new employment prospects through working with MSC Cruises.

MSC Cruises started discussions about recruiting Trinidad and Tobago citizens with Ministry representatives during the 2022 Florida Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA) and Seatrade Cruise Conferences in Miami and Puerto Rico and is now seeking to capitalize on the opportunity.

The Ministry’s overall aim is to ensure that persons who do not have jobs gain meaningful employment. Given the need for jobs, the Ministry continues to further talks with other cruise lines to ensure that even more citizens benefit from these opportunities.

The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and the Arts is encouraged by the confidence placed in the capacity and professionalism of Trinidad and Tobago citizens.

MSC Cruises, like a number of other cruise lines, view Trinidad and Tobago citizens as “a magnificent asset of hospitality and marine professionals”.

This recruitment exercise follows an exciting 2022/2023 Cruise Season that saw an estimated 29 cruise calls by several cruise lines, including MSC Cruises, to Port of Spain, Trinidad.

Minister of Tourism, Culture and the Arts, Senator the Honourable Randall Mitchell says “As the cruise calls and interest in Trinidad and Tobago continue to grow, we are eager to bring our Trinbagonian energy and professionalism to the high seas. I look forward to many more cruise lines looking towards Trinidad and Tobago as a base for high-quality hires.”

The Application Process

Candidates must apply online and submit e-applications for the available positions by May 5, 2023.These applications will form part of a registration and pre-screening process to be conducted by Meridian Recruitment Agency Ltd and MSC Cruises. eTurboNews:

To mark the occasion and honour the 150th anniversary of Holland America Line, a plaque was presented to the captain of the Zaandam, Ane Smit. The season will run until October 30, 2023, and the number of international passengers is expected to exceed 45,000, up nearly 20% more than last year.

With 51 visits (five more than last year) featuring 38 embarking and disembarking operations and 13 stopovers, the season will generate $25 million in economic impact.

Confirming the resolve of cruise lines to lower their environmental impact, several of the scheduled ships are equipped to use the shore power supply facilities that have been available at the Port of Montreal’s Grand Quay since 2017. This technology makes it possible for berthed cruise ships and wintering vessels to turn off their engines, resulting in an average reduction of five tons of GHG emissions with each connection. Eight different ships, from the Holland-America, Regent Seven Seas, Hapag-Lloyd and Viking cruise lines, on altogether 19 visits this season will be able to plug in and power up this way.

“The cruise sector is proving its attractiveness and dynamism in Montreal. Not only is the number of passengers up from last year, gradually returning to a level of traffic comparable to our pre-pandemic levels, but more and more of the cruise ships that stop at the Port are using our shore power supply system. The Port of Montreal is the only port on the St. Lawrence and one of only 25 in the world to provide this service to cruise ships. As well as generating major economic benefits for the City, the cruise industry is a tourism sector that is transitioning to more energy-efficient and sustainable practices,” said Martin Imbleau, President and Chief Executive Officer of the MPA.

“Every year, the docking of the first cruise ship kicks off the long-awaited summer tourist season. Montréal is delighted to see the arrival of thousands of cruise passengers, who will add to the lively atmosphere of the Old Port as they enjoy its many cultural activities. We are particularly excited about the on-dock shore power at our cruise terminal, which aligns perfectly with the values of the sustainable destination that we are,” said Yves Lalumière, President and CEO of Tourisme Montréal.

Five ships will call at the Port of Montreal for the first time this season:

• Hapag-Lloyd’s Hanseatic Inspiration (230 passengers)
• Oceania’s Vista (1,200 passengers)
• Peace Boat’s Pacific World (1,950 passengers)
• Viking Ocean Cruises’ Viking Neptune and Viking Mars (930 passengers each)

Of note, the ship The World, that last visited in 2015, will be in Montreal from September 25 to 27, 2023. What makes this 165-residence ship distinctive is that passengers own their own cabin. Imagine having a condo on the sea!

Marking Holland-America Line’s 150th anniversary with a regular at the Port

Piloted by Netherlands native Captain Ane Smit, who has been with Holland America Line for 23 years, the Zaandam is the first cruise ship to visit the Port of Montreal in 2023.

Celebrating its 150th anniversary this year, Holland America Line has become the largest cruise line to visit Montreal in recent years. In fact, between 2010 and 2022, Holland-America Line ships made 136 visits to Montreal and brought 337,111 passengers, representing 54% of all passengers in Montreal during this period.

In other words, more than one out of every two passengers arrived or departed from Montreal aboard a Holland-America Line cruise ship.

Quantum of the Seas is a Quantum-class cruise ship currently operated by Royal Caribbean International and is the lead ship of her class. At her time of delivery in 2014, Quantum of the Seas was the third-largest cruise ship in the world.

Cruising to Hawaii on this Royal Caribbean voyage was the end for an Australian male passenger missing in the Pacific Ocean about 500 miles from Kailua-Kona, Hawaii today.

The U.S. Coast Card cooperated with Honolulu’s joined rescue coordination center in the search for this passenger.

Coordinated with the Australian Consulate in Honolulu, authorities now decided to give up on the search. The search started Tuesday at 11 pm Hawaii time.

A media statement by The Rescue Coordination Center Honolulu says: “After reviewing all relevant information of the case and discussing with our Australian consulate counterparts as well as with the next of kin, the Coast Guard has made the difficult decision to suspend the active search for the passenger aboard the Quantum of the Seas.”

The Coast Guard received a report from the cruise ship just after 11 p.m. Tuesday.

Members of the cruise ship crew remained on the scene and searched for the missing passenger for two hours before resuming course for Hawaii island.

The Coast Guard launched its HC-130 Hercules plane Wednesday morning.

The latest head-turning, ocean-going yacht from Emerald Cruises, Emerald Sakara, is undergoing its final fit-out in preparation for its upcoming sea trials.

Work is on schedule to complete the yacht’s stylish interior before it welcomes guests on board. There is now just three months to go until the luxurious vessel makes its debut sailing – an eight-day Ionian Sea Adventure, cruising from Athens to Rome, departing 5 August 2023.

Custom-built at The Halong Shipbuilding Company in Vietnam, Emerald Sakara is the second luxury yacht to join the Emerald Cruises fleet, following quickly in the wake of identical sister yacht, Emerald Azzurra, which launched in March 2022.

Boasting just 50 luxurious suites and staterooms, the majority featuring their own private balcony or terrace, like her sister yacht, Emerald Sakara carries a maximum of 100 guests per journey. Together, they create a new type of exclusive cruising experience, exploring ports and harbours only accessible to small yachts.
“Our director of product design – Karen Moroney – and I, have overseen the development and construction of Emerald Sakara, and having visited the shipyard recently can say it certainly exceeds our expectation,” said Glen Moroney, Chairman and founder of The Scenic Group, Emerald Cruises’ parent company.

“Being able to add to the Emerald Cruises fleet again so swiftly is a sign of the reception our new Emerald Yachts have received from guests and our travel partners. Emerald Sakara opens up a whole world of new destinations that are sure to spark greater demand.”
On board, Emerald Sakara’s Wellness Centre comes complete with a spa, gym and state-of-the-art infrared sauna for the ultimate indulgence, while its Sky Bar, Infinity Pool and comfortable public areas are perfect to relax and watch the world go by.

The yacht’s marina platform is designed with watersports in mind. Take the plunge into activities including swimming, snorkeling, paddleboarding, exploring with SEABOBs and even a water-trampoline.

Andrea Stafford, UK director of trade sales for The Scenic Group added “This is a beautiful new yacht that raises the game yet again. It’s our intention to show it off as much as possible, so we are planning some exciting fam trips for agents. Watch this space for more information!”

After debuting in August, Emerald Sakara will embark on a summer season exploring the clear coastal waters of Italy, Greece, Turkey and the Adriatic. From there, it’s off across the Atlantic for a winter of Caribbean and Central American sunshine, with the first Eastern Caribbean and Grenadines sailing scheduled to depart 17 November 2023.

The inaugural eight-day Ionian Sea Adventure begins in Rome (Civitavecchia) and heads to Athens (Pireaus), making a host of picturesque calls on the way. Guests have the opportunity to live it up with the glitterati on a guided walking tour in Capri, sample some of Sorrento’s famed gelato in one of the seaside towns, or even take in the colourful mountainside houses of Amalfi on a kayak tour* of the coast. Other tempting excursions include the chance to go river tubing in Alcantara, hike through olive groves in Cephalonia and step back into ancient Greece with a tour of Delphi’s ruins.

Emerald Sakara’s inaugural sailing is sold out, but guests can join the Ionian Sea Adventure itinerary from £3,926 per person, departing on 07 September 2024. *DiscoverMORE optional excursions and activities are at an additional cost.

Not all vacation spots are created equal. Some countries cost significantly more than others to visit.

  2. Argentina: $6,003
  3. Brazil: $11,510

Asia

This part of the world isn’t necessarily the most expensive to visit, but it is usually a long journey for most Americans.

Holland America Line will sail what is believed to be the first ever Grand Voyage “Pole-to-Pole” roundtrip from the United States in 2025. Details of the new 133-day sailing along with a simultaneous 124-day 2025 Grand World Voyage were announced today by President Gus Antorcha aboard Zuiderdam to Grand World Voyage guests currently sailing in the North Sea.

With the Grand Voyage: Pole-to-Pole and Grand World Voyage both departing in January 2025, this will be the first time that Holland America Line is offering two Grand Voyages of more than 120 days simultaneously. The Grand Voyage: Pole-to-Pole aboard Volendam enables cruisers to visit five continents on a journey that travels south-to-north, while the Grand World Voyage aboard Zuiderdam covers six continents on an east-to-west route, each conveniently sailing roundtrip from a U.S. homeport.

“This will be a truly historic pair of voyages,” Antorcha told guests. “Our Grand World Voyage travels east to west and our other Grands focus on one region, so designing this first-of-its-kind route that explores south to north roundtrip from the U.S. is an incredible way to allow our guests two different choices to travel across the world.”

“Detailed planning went into this voyage to ensure we’re visiting destinations when the weather is favorable, and we included locations that are sought after like the Amazon River, Greenland and Iceland, in addition to Antarctica and the Arctic,” said Paul Grigsby, vice president for deployment and itinerary planning for Holland America Line. “We’ve created two voyages that linger in ports for memorable moments and several overnight stays. We even timed it so the two voyages will meet-up to share an overnight experience in Barcelona.”

Starting today (April 20), travelers interested in either the 2025 Grand Voyage: Pole-to-Pole or 2025 Grand World Voyage can call Holland America Line’s World Cruise Reservations Desk or a travel advisor to make a deposited Future Cruise Request. Guests with a deposited Future Cruise Request will get priority booking confirmation prior to the two voyages officially opening to the public May 24, 2023.
