US Visa Restrictions for Undermining Democratic Process in Uganda

eTurboNews:

In response to human rights abuses and corruption in Uganda, the Department of State announces that it is taking steps to impose visa restrictions under Section 212(a)(3)(C) of the Immigration and Nationality Act on Ugandan individuals believed to be responsible for, or complicit in, undermining the democratic process in Uganda.

As directed by President Biden, the US government will continue to evaluate additional actions under this policy, as well as the use of other tools at our disposal, to promote accountability for Ugandan officials and other individuals responsible for, or complicit in, undermining the democratic process in Uganda, abusing human rights, including those of LGBTQI+ persons, or engaging in corrupt practices.

As previewed when the Anti-Homosexuality Act 2023 was enacted in Uganda at the end of May, the Department has also updated its travel guidance to US citizens to highlight the risk that LGBTQI+ persons, or those perceived to be LGBTQI+, could be prosecuted and subjected to life imprisonment or the death penalty based on provisions in the law.

The United States strongly supports the Ugandan people and remains committed to advancing respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms in Uganda and globally.

Poland Scraps Bus Route 666 to Hel After Church Complains

eTurboNews:

Polish transit operator PKS Gdynia announced that due to complaints from the Roman Catholic Church it will be renumber its notorious ‘Satanic Bus’ route serving Pomeranian resort area.

According to the operator, bus route 666, serving Poland’s Baltic Sea resort of Hel, will be re-numbered at the end of June.

“We changed the number from 666 to 669, [to be] less controversial and less conspicuous,” PKS Gdynia executive said, citing complaints by the church as one of the reasons for the decision.

“For us, the most important thing is that the buses run and that the routes are served properly. The line number is secondary.”

After the transit operator had assigned the number to bus few years ago, English-speaking visitors noticed the pun in taking route 666 to “Hell” and the line became a tourist attraction.

The ‘Satanic Bus’ route became so popular with outside visitors that Hel, a resort community of about 10,000 residents, became overcrowded at times during the summer beach season. Some tourists made the trip to the peninsula only to ride the bus.

While bus route 666 proved to be good for business, it was perceived less charitably by some in the traditionally Catholic country. Christian numerology associates 666 with the devil, based on a line from the Biblical Book of Revelation about the “number of the beast.”

Back in 2018, the Catholic newspaper called the pun “Satanic stupidity” and argued that it made frivolous fun of the “horror of soul death and separation from God’s love.” The outlet said it would call on the Polish government to intervene unless PKS Gdynia changed the route number.

“The Bus line 666 running to Hel, to put it briefly and bluntly, strikes at the Christian order of the Polish state and its foundations, and hence – at the well-being of all of us,” the paper cried.

But apparently, PKS Gdynia has now been inundated with complaints from the other camp. “We are shocked how many supporters of the old numbering have contacted us,” bus operator’s executive said, adding that it might be possible for Route 666 to return – maybe not this year, but perhaps the next.

It may seem like cruise ships discourage babies on board when finding out what things (even certain aged babies) are banned.

eTurboNews:

No need to post a “Baby On Board” sticker outside your cruise ship cabin door if that baby is not of a certain age. And forget about the bottle warmers, sterilizers, and baby monitors. Also no homemade baby food, please, and even for the older children, don’t bring inflatable pool toys. You say your dog or cat is your baby? Sorry, not allowed either. And just in case you were wondering, don’t bring helium balloons to any celebration you are planning while cruising.

Young Babies

Family-friendly cruises allow babies on board, but some ships specify the age of the babies, with some saying they can only be older than six months, and some with a 12-month-old requirement. Some cruise ships do not allow children at all, so take this into consideration when planning your trip. Some ships will be better suited to families and young children so ask your cruise agent for advice on the best cruise line for you.

Bottle Warmers and Sterilizers

Some cruise lines prohibit bottle warmers and sterilizers but may permit travel sterilizers. It is important to check with your cruise agent or provider before packing so you are sure there is no chance of it being on the list of banned items. Some cruise lines provide a number of sterilizers on board which can be hired as required.

Baby Monitors

Baby monitors are not permitted on many cruise lines, and the metal walls of many ships don’t allow the monitors to work properly anyway. On the cruise, it is likely you will either be in the same room or an adjoining room to your baby so there is no need to worry about being away from them or needing to monitor them as you will always be close by.

Parents are reminded that many cruise lines operate babysitting services at different times of the day. The support services offered vary hugely by cruise line, however. Some cruise lines do not supervise under 3s or might only offer childcare in a ‘kids club’ style environment. It is always best to check with your specialist cruise agent before booking.

Homemade Food

Pre-packaged, unopened snacks are allowed on a cruise, but any homemade food is banned. These limitations are related to concerns for food safety and contamination, as cruise lines are not able to provide refrigeration or storage for personal food items. One of the best things about cruising is there are lots of culinary options available on board so there is no need to bring food from home.

Inflatable Pool Toys

If your ship has a pool onboard, it may be tempting to bring along inflatable pool toys or noodles for young children, but these must be left at home. Most cruise lines only allow you to bring inflatable armbands for your little ones which must be deflated at the time of boarding. Other cruise lines will allow you to bring buoyancy vests on-board for children but this is not usually the case. It is always sensible to check with your cruise line before packing and leaving home.

Pets

Household pets like dogs and cats are not allowed on the majority of cruise lines, but service dogs (e.g. guide dogs/seeing eye dogs) are an exception. You will need to get permission from the cruise line before bringing a service dog on board, however, and the dog must be officially registered.

Helium Balloons

Anyone planning a celebratory cruise for a birthday, anniversary or other occasion should refrain from bringing balloons. Most cruise lines have banned inflatables of all kinds, but some offer a service to buy balloons from the ship and have them delivered to your room for the big day.

And Furthermore… No, No, and No

Irons and Steamers

Items which generate heat are prohibited from cruises as they are viewed as potential fire hazards. Anyone wanting to iron their clothes once onboard should check to see if their ship provides a public laundry room which includes irons and board for passengers. Dry cleaning and pressing services are also available on many luxury ships.

For those traveling on luxury cruise lines, many cabin grades will include a free laundry and pressing service. People staying in suites will often enjoy the services of a dedicated butler who will react swiftly to impromptu requests for a shirt or dress to be pressed before dinner for example.

Extension Leads and Cords

Most newer ships are designed with accessibility in mind, with lots of power sockets around every cabin, stateroom or suite. However, older ships may not be as well equipped. However due to fire and safety regulations, passengers are prohibited from bringing their own multi outlet extension cord or lead to boost the number of plugs in their cabin.

If needed, 220-volt cruise-compliant extension cords with USB charging ports are usually sold in the ship’s on-board shop. Check first with your cruise line to see if they prohibit extension cords or not and always err on the side of caution.

Alcohol

Most cruise lines don’t allow passengers to bring beer or liquor onboard, but they allow one bottle of wine per passenger. This must be in your carry-on bag rather than checked luggage and bottles must be unopened and sealed. Some lines charge a corkage fee, so be sure to check with your cruise line before packing your favorite wine.

If you are flying to meet your cruise ship, this adds another layer of complexity. Whilst you can carry alcoholic beverages in your hold luggage on an aircraft (under 70% proof) or buy alcohol at the duty free store at the airport, these items may well be confiscated when boarding your ship. All baggage is x-rayed before going on a cruise ship and often alcohol will be removed to meet the regulatory standards at specific ports of call.

Thanks to Panache Cruises for sharing banned cruise ship items – inanimate and living.

eTurboNews:

This transfer which took place on Friday, June 9, 2023, was confirmed to this eTN correspondent by Dr. Justin Aradjabu Rsdjabu Lomata, DRC General Administrator at Jeffery Travels, a tourism, environment, nature conservation and sustainable development travel agency based in the region of the Democratic Republic of Congo precisely in Kisangani in the province of Tshopo.

The white rhinoceros was the emblematic and endemic species of Garamba National Park before its disappearance in 2006 following poaching. Its reintroduction, therefore, aims to restore the complete richness of the Garamba complex.

“This will strengthen the contribution of this protected area to the economy of flora and fauna in the DRC, thus generating benefits for local communities and all Congolese in general.”

“[It is] a way to promote sustainable socio-economic growth,” added Milan Yves Ngangay, the Director General of ICCN (L’Institut Congolais pour la Conservation de la Nature), The Congolese Institute for the Conservation of Nature, who has co-managed the park with the international organization, African Parks, for 18 years. This project was made possible thanks to the financial support of the Barrick Gold corporation.

Garamba National Park

Garamba National Park is among the oldest national parks in Africa. It was gazetted in 1938. The park is located in Orientale Province, northeast of THE Democratic Republic of Congo, and it borders with South Sudan. In 1980, the park was designated A World Heritage Site by UNESCO due to its great biodiversity and huge numbers of wildlife species.

Garamba National Park covers an area the size of 5,200 km2, and it is administered by African Parks, which is a non-profit organization that takes on direct responsibility for the rehabilitation and long-term management of protected areas in Africa, as well as the Institute Congolais pour la Conservation de la Nature (ICCN).

The park is famous for being a home to herds of elephants and the Kordofan giraffe.

The park is rich in biodiversity despite  civil unrest that decimated the rhino population. It is characterized by savannah grasslands, papyrus, tropical rainforests, rocky outcrops, and marshlands with dotted inselbergs.

Various rivers cross through the park such as the River Dungu and River Garamba; these act as a source of water for the animals. The park has a diversity of wildlife ranging from large herds of elephants, giant forest hogs, buffaloes, duikers, hyenas, waterbucks, mongoose, bush pigs, golden cats, vervet monkeys, De Brazza’s monkeys, Olive baboons, Kordofan giraffes, as well as over 1,000 tree species of which about 5% are endemic to the park.

Besides these animals, the park is a home to over 340 bird species such as the squaco heron, knob billed ducks, fishing eagle, white backed pelicans, pied kingfisher, spur winged plovers, water thick knee, black crake, wattled plovers, long tailed cormorant, and white-faced whistling among others.

$54M Project to Create Youth Jobs in Zanzibar’s Blue Economy

eTurboNews:

The African Development Bank Group and the Republic of Tanzania have launched the Skills Development for Youth Employability in Blue Economy project. This is a project that will enable Zanzibari youth to find well-paying maritime and other blue economy jobs.

The Bank is providing grant financing of $48.65 million for the project, with the Tanzanian government contributing an additional $5.42 million. Both parties signed the grant agreement on the 21st of November 2022, with its official launch taking place on 17 May 2023.

The project will benefit about 43,000 youth (40% of them female) and prepare over 1,500 of them to start their own enterprises. They will be able to improve their livelihoods and spur the creation of new jobs. Ocean-based activities, including tourism, contribute more than 29% of Zanzibar’s gross domestic product and employ about 33% of its work force. At the same time, 60% of tourism workers in the islands are foreign.

Dr. Hussein Mwinyi, President of Zanzibar, launched the project during a ceremony held at the Golden Tulip Hotel near Zanzibar Airport. Ministers, permanent secretaries, and other senior government officials attended the ceremony, as did representatives of civil society and youth-led organizations.

President Mwinyi thanked the African Development Bank Group for what he said was its timely support, which would enhance youth employability and job creation in tourism and in the maritime, and oil and gas industries.

The Skills Development for Youth Employability in Blue Economy project will support the expansion of the State University of Zanzibar through construction of a technology and business incubator at Unguja, the archipelago’s main island. The incubator will offer training and mentorship to young entrepreneurs, bolstering job creation in tourism, the maritime sectors, and the oil and gas industry. Approximately 400 SUZA academics and lecturers will receive new skills and training.

The project will also help upgrade Karume Institute of Science and Technology (KIST), which will offer courses relating to the oil and gas industries.

In addition, the project will support construction of five vocational training centres in Unguja and Pemba island.

African Development Bank Group Tanzania Country Manager Patricia Laverley acknowledged the Government of Zanzibar’s request for support in addressing the peninsula’s high unemployment, especially among the youth. She said the Bank’s presence at the launch ceremony was evidence of its commitment to advance human capital development and help transform Zanzibar’s economy.

The project is aligned with Zanzibar’s 2021 Education Policy and the Blue Economy Strategy.

International Visitors Spent $17.3 Billion on US Travel in April

eTurboNews:

Data recently released by the National Travel and Tourism Office (NTTO) show that in April 2023 international visitors spent more than $17.3 billion on travel to, and tourism-related activities within, the United States, an increase of nearly 26 percent compared to April 2022 and marking the twenty-fifth consecutive month of year-over-year gains (when compared to the same month, previous year).

Conversely, Americans spent a record-setting $17.2 billion traveling abroad, yielding a balance of trade surplus of $83 million for the month—reversing a trend of seven consecutive months of balance of trade deficits for U.S. travel and tourism.

Revised data released by the Bureau of Economic Analysis (monthly trade data were revised back to 2018) suggest that international visitors have spent nearly $67.2 billion on U.S. travel and tourism-related goods and services year to date (January through April 2023), an increase of more than 45 percent when compared to 2022. International visitors have injected, on average, nearly $560 million a day into the U.S. economy year to date.

Composition of Monthly Spending (Travel Exports)

• Travel Spending

  • Purchases of travel and tourism-related goods and services by international visitors traveling in the United States totaled $9.7 billion during April 2023 (compared to $7.2 billion in April 2022), an increase of nearly 35 percent when compared to the previous year. These goods and services include food, lodging, recreation, gifts, entertainment, local transportation in the United States, and other items incidental to foreign travel.
  • Travel receipts accounted for 56 percent of total U.S. travel and tourism exports in April 2023.

• Passenger Fare Receipts

  • Fares received by U.S. carriers from international visitors totaled $3.1 billion in April 2023 (compared to $2.4 billion in the previous year), up 31 percent when compared to April 2022. These receipts represent expenditures by foreign residents on international flights provided by U.S. air carriers.
  • Passenger fare receipts accounted for 18 percent of total U.S. travel and tourism exports in April 2023.

• Medical/Education/Short-Term Worker Spending

Canada Launches New Tourism Corridor Strategy

eTurboNews:

Destination Canada has launched a new pilot project called the Tourism Corridor Strategy Program, which aims to accelerate the intentional development of tourism corridors or clusters of tourism assets across Canada.

In partnership with a variety of stakeholders across provincial and territorial boundaries, this collaborative project will benefit not only the communities and destinations involved but will also bolster Canada’s competitiveness by giving visitors more reasons to travel to new regions across Canada.

A corridor is a geographic region or a route that connects different destinations with significant tourist attractions, such as:

• historical sites,
• natural landscapes,
• or cultural events.

Corridors have the potential to offer a range of attractions and experiences that are connected by a scenic and convenient route, making them popular amongst visitors who want to explore multiple destinations in a single journey, ultimately benefitting local communities.

“As a country, we aim to offer legendary experiences for our guests, end-to-end but for our tourism sector to grow and truly thrive, we must equally consider the aspirations of communities as hosts, said Marsha Walden,” President and CEO, Destination Canada. “Our new pilot program will help to fill the existing gap in cross-boundary, intentional, destination development and ultimately help build a more resilient tourism industry that contributes to the wealth and wellbeing of Canadians, while also making Canada a more competitive destination, aligning our offering with the expectations of today’s high value guests.”

As part of the Tourism Corridor Strategy Program, Destination Canada, along with a consultant, and selected corridor partners will co-create and deliver a strategy, implementation plan, and financial plan to support a regenerative approach to the development of these tourism corridors in the future.

“Canada makes all senses come alive with an abundance of natural beauty, captivating international business events, riveting cultural performances, and eye-opening Indigenous experiences. Domestic and international visitors alike have a growing interest in more sustainable forms of tourism, and Canada is well-positioned to deliver. The Tourism Corridor Strategy Program will promote the visitors’ economy across Canada, strengthen our tourism ecosystem, and supports vibrant, thriving communities from coast to coast to coast for long-term prosperity,” said The Honorable Randy Boissonnault, Minister of Tourism and Associate Minister of Finance.

Selected Corridors:

Applications to be part of the pilot program opened to industry in February 2023. Following a comprehensive review process, Destination Canada has selected three high-potential tourism corridors to support for 2023.

The selected projects include:

• Atlantic Canada UNESCO Tourism Corridor: Brings together the Canadian Commission for UNESCO, Fundy Biosphere Region, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador and Parks Canada to convene diverse stakeholders, foster innovation, and identify a common vision for the future where humans and the environment connect and thrive. Atlantic Canada hosts 13 UNESCO-designated sites that form a network of unique landscapes, rich cultural history and diverse offerings.

• Sustainable Journey from Prairies to Pacific: Leverages Highway 3 which is a key interprovincial corridor linking the large urban hubs of Southern Alberta and British Columbia’s lower mainland. This corridor will integrate the existing key strategies and experience themes in Alberta and British Columbia to produce a collection of potential investment opportunities, as well as infrastructure enhancements to grow demand and manage visitation in the long-term.

• Northern Indigenous Tourism Lodge Network: Engages First Nations communities on the concept of an Indigenous Tourism Lodge Network throughout the Yukon, western Northwest Territories and Northern BC. This project will determine interest and readiness to develop small-scale, Indigenous-owned tourism lodges as one way to respond to the strong demand for authentic Indigenous tourism experiences and products. Development would create employment and business opportunities based on Indigenous cultural expression in remote northern communities.

Phase one will assess community readiness and the business case for such a network and produce a report for consideration by First Nation Governments, development corporations, businesses and investors.

eTurboNews:

Mr. Miththapala has authored countless articles for eTurboNews about the elephants in Sri Lanka, the country’s tourism, and relationship between these two entities. He has over 25 years of experience in the hospitality industry.

He was President of Tourist Hotels Association of Sri Lanka from 2008 to 2010, and in 2009 led an EU funded project called “Greening of Sri Lanka Hotels” to promote sustainability best practices as the Director and Consultant at the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce. He also served as a Board member of the Sri Lanka Hotel Classification Committee until 2012. Earlier in his career he served in several executive positions for hotels and management companies.

Currently, he is a part-time consultant in tourism for World Bank, Washington D.C., as well as a member of the Public Utilities Commission Consumer Consultative Committee.

Srilal has always been a committed environmentalist with a special interest in wildlife and especially for elephants.

Elephantine Tales is a collection of short anecdotes of his experiences in the national parks of Sri Lanka doing what he yearns to as often as possible – exploring nature, wildlife, and of course elephants. The book is full of “Elephantine Tales” and a few other wildlife as well. It will be of interest to the die-hard wildlife fraternity, as well as to the laymen with some interest in wildlife.

It is somewhat a personal odyssey re-living his experiences and close interaction with these gentle giants. It is written in simple language and the narratives are packed with in depth information about the environment, wildlife, and elephant behavior.

Srilal Miththapala

Here’s what the world-famous elephant researcher of Amboseli fame, Dr. Joyce Poole, Co-Founder and Scientific Director of ElephantVoices, said about the book: “I really enjoyed your book. Elephantine Tales is an immensely readable book about elephants and the love of the Sri Lankan people for them. Srilal Miththapala’s firsthand experiences took me back to the short period I studied elephants in Sri Lanka and reminded me of the warmth and enthusiasm of the people I met there. Miththapala’s tales are those of a naturalist who sets an example of the kind of individual dedication upon which the future survival of the country’s elephants depend.”

Prof. Devaka Rogrugo, top environment expert and head of the Dept. of Zoology at the Colombo University, said: “In this book, Srilal presents a series of short stories about his close encounters with elephants. However, I feel that the book transcends just storytelling, as it provides a wealth of information about the ecology and biology of elephants. Further, the book also provides the reader with an account of the historical changes that have taken place in some of the national parks in Sri Lanka, especially Uda Walawe National Park. I found this book very inspiring and informative.”

Prof. Devaka Weerakoon, Prof. of Environment Science at Colombo University, along with Dr. Sumith Pilapitya, Former Head of Environment at World Bank and former Director of Wildlife, as well as Mr. Hiran Cooray, Chairman of the Jetwing group, graced the event.

The book was launched this month in June at Jetwing Colombo 7 hotel with an appreciative audience who enjoyed the evening which was followed by light cocktails generously sponsored by Jetwing.

eTurboNews:

Restaurant Manager of Gather 55, Molly Reynolds, said for customers who cannot pay the minimum of $2 for their meal, “they can volunteer for half an hour. And when you can’t do either of those, we supply a meal voucher.” About 60% of meals during the day are discounted or free. At night, the team transforms the dining hall into an upscale restaurant with a revolving menu curated by local chefs, which underwrites the cost of their daytime program.

Gather 55 is an initiative of Hands On Hartford, a nonprofit serving those most economically challenged in areas of food, housing and health for more than 50 years. It is also one of 25 U.S. grantees of this year’s Backing Historic Small Restaurants grant program, a program from American Express and the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

In its third year, the program is awarding each recipient $40,000 – collectively $1 million in grant funding – to help them improve their business’ physical space and support critical operating costs with the goal of helping the restaurants make an even larger positive impact on their communities. Grant recipients span 20 states and the District of Columbia, and there are historic restaurants receiving this grant in 11 of those states for the first time.

“Whether you come to us as a diner or as a doer, which is a volunteer, we welcome you.”

Molly Reynolds added: “We need our donors, too. They make this model of helping others work!” Chef Tyler Anderson, named Connecticut Chef of the Year and finalist on season 15 of Top Chef, is the primary culinary advisor.

Just as American Express works to back its colleagues, customers, and communities, the management of Gather 55, a unique pay-what-you-can restaurant in Hartford, Connecticut, says they’re similarly focused on their community of “diners, donors, and doers.”

“Restaurants like Gather55 have a positive ripple effect on their local community. That’s why we’re passionate about supporting small businesses and established several “Backing Small” grant programs to help them grow and expand their impact,” said Madge Thomas, President of American Express Foundation and Head of Corporate Sustainability, American Express.

The Gather 55 team wants their old warehouse building to look more like a traditional restaurant, and the grant money will help them achieve that vision. “We’re a nonprofit that provides much more than just meal services. Having an organization like American Express, which is really committed to supporting the community, as a partner in this work, makes everything possible,” said Kate Shafer, Director of Partnerships and Support, Hands On Hartford.

Gorilla Trekking, an opportunity to see the largest surviving primates in their natural habitats is heartwarming and life-changing.

eTurboNews:

Mountain gorillas, the most visited Gorilla sub-species, are found in Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. There are approximately 1063 individuals as per the last Gorilla Census of 2018.

Meeting these gentle giants in their natural habitats (typically rainforests with altitudes of 2500 to 4000 meters above sea level) requires proper preparation, and knowing what to expect is very helpful in having a perfect gorilla tour. Here are some important tips on how to plan the perfect Gorilla Trek:

Book your Gorilla Safari with a reputable Tour Operator

Gorilla Trekking is undeniably an incredible wildlife viewing adventure but can be a costly safari, especially if you consider high-end accommodation facilities. If you plan on going gorilla trekking, we advise doing some research on credible tour operators before booking with them, to ensure a perfect gorilla safari.

There are many fraudsters whom you may pay money to for a certain quality of service, but end up receiving substandard service. Hence, take your time to read reviews before deciding on the tour operator.

With a reputable company, all aspects of your gorilla safari – gorilla permits, accommodation, transport, and other logistics – will be planned, and all you will need to do is make prompt payments and be ready to enjoy your time with the giant apes.

Book Gorilla Permits in advance

Gorilla Trekking is done in only three countries, and each of them has a limited number of gorilla permits issued each day. The best way to guarantee a perfect gorilla safari is by booking permits in advance, preferably 6 to 12 months in advance.

It is interesting to note that only 96 gorilla permits are issued each day for Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, about 160 permits for Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda each day. You wouldn’t want to be disappointed last minute by booking gorilla permits late.

Get in shape for Gorilla Trekking

One of the prerequisites for having a perfect gorilla trek is being in shape for the adventure, as it requires walking through dense vegetation and high altitudes (between 2500 and 4000 meters above sea level).

Gorilla Treks also involve hiking steep slopes, crossing muddy terrains, and jumping streams, which require a physically able person. You can practice hiking hills, climbing steps, or jogging. However, this doesn’t mean that elderly individuals, people with reduced mobility, or physically unfit travelers can’t achieve their dream of meeting face-to-face with the Giant Apes in their natural habitats.

In fact, we have had cases of 80-year-old visitors participating in the adventure with the provision of Sedan Chairs (hired at $300 to $500 per person), lifted by four able-bodied porters.

Pack for a day in the forest

Remember that mountain gorilla natural habitats are hilly, densely forested, and cold (17 to 23 degrees Celsius), and there are great chances of experiencing rain showers or hot sunshine during your gorilla trek.

For this reason, it is recommended to always dress in long-sleeved shirts, breathable and lightweight safari pants, sturdy hiking boots, a lightweight rain jacket, gaiters, a safari hat, and sunglasses. Also, carry an insect repellent, enough drinking water, energy-giving snacks, and wear plenty of sunscreen, in addition to your camera and binoculars.

We always say a camera is a must-have for recording your gorilla trekking experience, so make sure to have plenty of batteries and memory space because sightings are usually incredible.

Follow the guidelines

Before you head out on your gorilla trekking adventure, you will be provided with a set of guidelines that you must follow while trekking and when spending time with the Mountain Gorillas.

Always follow them for your safety and that of the mountain gorillas. Some of these guidelines include not using flash cameras for photography, not feeding or touching the Giant Apes, maintaining a distance of 7 meters when watching/photographing them, avoiding noise while trekking, leaving no trace/not littering, spending only the allocated one hour, not coughing or sneezing in the presence of the Great Apes, and avoiding direct eye contact.

In conclusion, planning the perfect gorilla trek is an exciting and fulfilling endeavor. By following these essential tips, you can ensure a memorable and rewarding experience with the majestic mountain gorillas.

Begin by booking your gorilla safari with a reputable tour operator, who will handle all the necessary arrangements. Remember to secure your gorilla permits well in advance to avoid disappointment. Prepare yourself physically for the trek by getting in shape and know that accommodations can be made for individuals with reduced mobility. Pack appropriately for a day in the forest, considering the hilly terrain, dense vegetation, and fluctuating weather conditions. Lastly, adhere to the guidelines provided to ensure the safety of both yourself and the mountain gorillas.

Mexico's State Tailor-Made for LGBTQ+ Travel

eTurboNews:

The recipe for a world-class LGBTQ+ destination is simple: All you need are fabulous hotels, beautiful beaches, exquisite dining, electric nightlife, gorgeous scenery and, of course, an inclusive energy. Enter Mexico’s State of Nayarit, a destination that exceeds in these areas and beyond. It’s a place practically tailor-made for LGBTQ+ travel.

In fact, Nayarit has been catching the eyes of LGBTQ+ travelers for a while now. It is one of the many states in Mexico that recognize same-sex marriage and has always been a champion for inclusivity, including a unique Huichol (indigenous) ceremony, with a Marakame (a person who is an intermediate between the living the spirit world) who “unites the souls”.

In 2022, the state’s beaches –also known as the Riviera Nayarit –took home the award for top Beach Destination at the LGBT+ Travel Awards Mexico. The organization recognized Riviera Nayarit for its diversity, inclusion and respect for all.

Nayarit is home to many wonderful cities, beach towns and small villages, all of which are ready to welcome and host LGBTQ+ travelers. From the gorgeous oceanfront resorts and restaurants of Nuevo Nayarit to boutique-heavy bohemian beach towns like Sayulita, the luxury hotspots of Punta Mita, like Thierry Blouet’s Tuna Blanca, and the rugged nature and beautiful wildlife of San Blas, Nayarit has a vibe to fit every style of traveler.

Of course, the LGBTQ+ community is welcome beyond just the beaches in the state of Nayarit. The state capital, Tepic, for example, has a small but active gay scene, with several gay bars, as well as an annual Pride march held every June.

Among the top draws to Nayarit for LGBTQ+ travelers is a lengthy list of luxury hotels, resorts and villas. Punta Mita is one of the top luxury enclaves within the state of Nayarit.

It is home to five-star resorts like St. Regis Punta Mita Resort, the newly opened Naviva by Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita, the new adults-only, 15 glamping suites; and the Susurros del Corazon, part of the Auberge Resorts Collection.

Travelers will also find other resorts along northern Punta de Mita, as well as one of the most robust villa rental portfolios in the country.

More boutique hotel options can be found in between, from the village of Bucerias up through Sayulita, San Pancho, Chacala known for its wellness offering, and San Blas for bird watching.

Nayarit is perfect for the active LGBTQ+ travelers who want to experience more than just sun and sand — though the beaches along the Riviera Nayarit are among the most pristine in Mexico, particularly for surfers. Wildlife enthusiasts can spot thousands of migratory birds in the seaside village of San Blas and Islas Marias, San Pancho, Islas Marietas National Park, a protected park known for its marine life, as well as its birds. Hiking, mountain biking and yoga are also all part of the Nayarit experience.

Visitors can also take their time learning about history and culture. Nayarit has four of Mexico’s famous Pueblos Magicos, or “Magic Towns,” that are recognized for their preserved history, culture and traditions.

Sayulita is arguably the most famous Pueblo Magico in not only Nayarit but all of Mexico, and the state is also home to Compostela, Jala and Mexcaltitan. Compostela boasts splendid churches and gorgeous colonial architecture, as well as one of Mexico’s largest bird sanctuaries. The town of Jala sits in the shadow of the Ceboruco volcano, which is a beautiful spot for hiking or watching the sunset. Mexcaltitan is known as the Venice of Mexico, thanks to the canals that form within the streets during the rainy season. The car-free island is splashed with brightly colored houses and features some of the best seafood in Mexico.

Oceania Cruises, the world’s leading culinary- and destination-focused cruise line, is proud to announce that Chef Alexis Quaretti, Senior Culinary Director, has been inducted into the prestigious echelons of the Maîtres Cuisiniers de France. Quaretti joins Oceania Cruises’ Vice President of Culinary Eric Barale, who served as Quaretti’s godfather into the program. As such, Oceania Cruises is the only major cruise line to boast two Master Chefs of France.

The association of Master Chefs of France was established in 1951. Its goal is to support and promote French culinary arts around the world. This mission is embodied by the chef members, as they are ambassadors of French cuisine and culture and are responsible for relaying this heritage to their apprentices.

“It’s truly remarkable to have two Master Chefs of France leading our culinary team,” said Frank A. The palpable kinship and passion throughout the culinary team prove that Oceania Cruises not only serves The Finest Cuisine at Sea® but also has the finest culinary team at sea.”

His ever-changing menus celebrate the freshest ingredients and are inspired by his home country of France as well as his world travels.

As the line’s recipe development manager, Quaretti has designed, made and tested every dish served on an Oceania Cruises’ ship. He and his talented team create approximately 300 new recipes each year to constantly revitalize and reinvigorate the onboard menus.

USAID Follows WTN with Warning About Uganda Travel

eTurboNews:

After the World Tourism Network (WTN) warned travelers to Uganda about the possible dangers involved, and urged the United States to take action, USAID issued a firm warning today, urging Uganda to reconsider dangerous law targeting LGBTQI+ that jeopardizes assistance.

The United States cancelled the current Visa for Uganda’s House Speaker Anita Among.

With the enactment of the Anti-Homosexuality Act of 2023 (AHA), Uganda has become one of the most dangerous places in the world for LGBTQI+ persons. Under the AHA, persons who engage in same-sex relations may be imprisoned for life or even face the death penalty.

This law is an unconscionable attack on an already marginalized group. No one should be punished or harmed for whom they love. LGBTQI+ Ugandans have been a part of the country’s society throughout history and should enjoy the same protections and opportunities as every other Ugandan. Yet since the AHA passed Parliament on March 21, 2023, LGBTQI+ Ugandans have been targeted with heightened violence, harassment, and evictions. Many fear they will soon lose access to critical health and social services.

The AHA is only the latest in a series of actions by the Government of Uganda to curtail freedoms and violate the human rights of its people. Human rights are under attack in Uganda, with journalists, human rights defenders, and anyone who opposes the regime regularly arrested, tortured, and disappeared. The increasing threats, violence, and abuse perpetrated against the Ugandan people, including members of the LGBTQI+ community and those who provide services to them, is unacceptable.

As one of the largest providers of foreign assistance to the people of Uganda, including through the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS relief, USAID remains committed to nondiscrimination for all its program participants – including on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity.

As we have raised on many occasions with the Government of Uganda, the enactment of the AHA will directly impede our ability to provide effective USAID assistance to the people of Uganda. It will hinder our partnership with Uganda and the Ugandan people in the fight against HIV/AIDS. It will severely undermine the ability of USAID staff and U.S. partners who identify as LGBTQI+ to safely and freely live and work in Uganda. And it will make it more difficult for our partners to advance inclusive development across the many sectors and areas where we work.

Because of this, USAID is joining other departments and agencies from across the U.S. government to evaluate the impact of this law on our policy, relationship, and assistance toward Uganda. The United States urges the Government of Uganda to reconsider the Anti-Homosexuality Act, demand an end to violence against Ugandans under the auspices of the law, and take affirmative steps to protect human rights for all Ugandans.

Shame on Uganda’s President Museveni, Tourism Leaders Warn (eturbonews.com)

Travel to Top 10 US Cultural Cities

eTurboNews:

While beach holidays and visits to amusement parks are great fun for families, cultural vacations are a fantastic opportunity to show your children something new.

Travel industry experts released a study reviewing the number of cultural attractions, US searches for museums and art galleries, and culture-related Instagram posts to reveal the top cities for culture in the US.

The great thing about cultural attractions is that there are so many to choose from, and each city has its own unique culture to explore.

The top 10 US cities for culture and their Culture Score:

1. Palm Springs, California – 9.27
2. Santa Fe, New Mexico – 8.99
3. Annapolis, Maryland – 8.43
4. San Francisco, California – 8.37
5. New Orleans, Louisiana – 8.24
6. Charleston, South Carolina – 8.02
7. Portland, Maine – 7.98
8. Boston, Massachusetts – 7.89
9. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – 7.66
10. Washington, District of Columbia – 7.49

Palm Springs is the top US city for culture, having earned a score of 9.27 in our study. This artistic enclave in California’s Sonoran Desert is a popular resort destination, famous for its stylish hotels, hot springs, and spas, as well as the large number of celebrities that make a home there.

While Palm Springs did not come top in any one category, the city performed well across the board, boasting a large number of cultural attractions for its relative size. The city also had the sixth-highest rate of culture-related Instagram posts per 1,000 people at 1322.26.

Santa Fe is the second-best city in the US for culture, receiving a score of 8.99. The state capital of New Mexico, Santa Fe, is one of the most unique cities in the country, boasting distinctive Pueblo-style architecture and attracting artists from far and wide. One of the most prominent cultural attractions in the city, of which there are many, is the Georgia O’Keefe Museum, dedicated to the famous 20th-century American artist who drew much inspiration from the surrounding area.

Santa Fe scored particularly well when it came to the number of museums and galleries compared to its population, with a rate almost four times higher than any other city at 209.77 per 100,000 people. The city scored well for most other factors, with high numbers of religious sites, historic sites, and theatres for its size, as well as the third-highest number of culture-related Instagram posts per 1,000 people at 1800.21.

The third best city for culture in the US is Annapolis, the state capital of Maryland. Annapolis is the first East-coast entry in our list and, as one of the oldest cities in the country, is packed with history for visitors to explore. The beautiful architecture of the historic district is popular among tourists, and the city boasts one of the country’s top waterfronts.

Annapolis scored well in most categories in our study but excelled when it came to historic sites and theatres per 1,000 people, topping both categories with rates of 22.12 and 19.66, respectively.

San Francisco placed fourth overall in our study of US cultural cities with a score of 8.37. This iconic West-coast location is famous for sloping streets that are a recognizable feature in many movies and movies.

Aside from being a common location in American cinema, San Francisco is famous for being an extremely liberal and bohemian city, attracting many artistic types from across the country. The city is also home to famous landmarks such as the prison island of Alcatraz and the beautiful Golden Gate Bridge.

San Francisco had the highest US search volume for local museums and galleries, showing that people in the area are particularly interested in cultural and historical pastimes. The city also scored particularly well for monuments and statues, with the tenth-highest number per head at 7.61 per 100,000 people.

New Orleans is the fifth-best city for culture in the US, having earned a culture score of 8.24. This Southern city is hugely popular among tourists, particularly for Mardis Gras, during which New Orleans becomes alive with almost non-stop partying and celebrations. Aside from the joys of carnival, New Orleans is famous for its beautiful colonial architecture, signature Creole cuisine, and many museums and art galleries, including the excellent New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA).

New Orleans scored the second-best for monuments and statues out of all 100 cities in our study, with 22.55 per 100,000 people. Visiting historical monuments and statues is a great way of incorporating history and culture into a day of exploring any city, requiring much less time and attention from your kids. Some of the most popular statues and monuments in New Orleans are the Hurrican Katrina Monument, the golden statue of Joan of Arc, and the Monument to the Immigrant, which overlooks the Mississippi River.

Africa Marks Six Decades of Political Independence

eTurboNews:

African continent had celebrated six decades of independence under the umbrella of the African Union, with high expectations for brighter economic prosperity and tourism development.

The continent had celebrated on Thursday this week 60 years of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) and its successor, the African Union.

The 60th Anniversary celebration of AU has been observed under the theme “Our Africa, Our Future”.

OAU was formed on 25 May, 1963 when 32 heads from independent African States met in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, along with leaders from African liberation movements and created a political and economic roadmap that paved a way for Africa’s complete independence and political and economic development.

Heads of the independent African states formed the OAU with a vision of pan-Africanism and United Africa that would be free to control of its own destiny and resources.

In 1999, the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the OAU convened an extraordinary session to expedite the process of economic and political integration in Africa.

On 9 September, 1999, the Heads of State and Government of the OAU issued “The Sirte Declaration” calling for the establishment of an African Union.

In 2002 during the Durban Summit, the African Union (AU) was officially launched as the successor to the Organization of African Unity.

The celebration of the 60th anniversary is an opportunity to recognize the role and contribution of the founders of the continental organization and many other Africans on the continent and in the diaspora, working hard to foster political and economic development in Africa.

With a vision of “Africa We Want” under the continent’s Agenda 2063, African states are currently encouraging each other to reflect the Pan-Africanism spirit for the continent’s future.

Rich in tourism and natural resources for tourist development, Africa stands as the future destination for global tourists and leisure travelers.

Through his message to mark the Africa Day 2023, the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) Secretary General Mr. Zurab Pololikashvili said that Africa is a vast and diverse continent, with vibrant cities and rich cultures.

“Africa is home to the world’s youngest population, as well as to a rapidly expanding middle class Africa is also a hub of entrepreneurship and innovation and boasts some of the most exciting tourism destinations on the planet”, said the UNWTO Secretary General.

“For many millions of people across the continent, tourism is a real lifeline. But the sector’s potential is still to be truly realized. Managed properly, tourism can accelerate socio-economic recovery and growth. It can spur wealth creation and inclusive development”, Pololikashvili said.

The removal of tariff barriers and the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area undoubtedly brings new opportunities for Africa.

Facilitating the free movement of individuals for business, for work or for studies, will help reduce economic disparities between regions, and deliver more opportunities, particularly for the most vulnerable, including women, who form the majority of the tourism workforce.

At the same time, regional collaboration and harmonized aviation policies in line with the Single African Air Transport Market will help us achieve the objectives of the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and the UN Agenda 2030.

“We have also realigned our UNWTO Agenda for Africa: Tourism for Inclusive Growth. It aims to directly support our Member States responding to the current challenges of tourism, particularly the need for more trained workers, more decent jobs and more and better-targeted tourism investments”, he said.

“Above all, we will continue to advocate for tourism as driver for positive change and a pillar of economic growth for the continent. On behalf of everyone at UNWTO, I wish you all a happy Africa Day”, concluded the UNWTO Secretary General through his message.

The Galilee International Management Institute of Israel had sent a message and said that Africa Day is the perfect occasion to celebrate the strong and thriving ties between Galilee Institute and the entire African Continent.

The exhibition presents about 300 exceptional pieces including Greek, Roman, Etruscan, and Italic, as well as medieval, modern, and contemporary works.

For the occasion, some of the Great Halls of the Baths of Diocletian are reopening to the public after decades of being closed. When open it hosted the Archaeological Exhibition in 1911 as part of the celebrations for the first fiftieth anniversary of the Unification of Italy and which still today preserves part of the historical setting of the fifties.

The exhibition, which can be visited until July 30, 2023, is promoted by the Italian Ministry of Culture and the Greek Ministry of Culture and Sport and testifies to the centrality and importance of the collaboration between the two states.

The exhibition event, organized by the General Directorate of Museums and the National Roman Museum in collaboration with Electa, is conceived and curated by Massimo Osanna, Stéphane Verger, Maria Luisa Catoni, and Demetrios Athanasoulis, with the support of the Archaeological Park of Pompeii and the participation of the IMT High Studies School Lucca and the Southern High School. There are 5 sections of the exhibition, each set up in one of the Great Halls of the Baths of Diocletian.

Room I – The eternity of an instant

It opens with the cast of 2 anonymous victims of the Vesuvius eruption that archeology has given us as eternally immobilized in the instant of death. Around them, on the other hand, various popular and cultured forms of modern reinterpretation of the ancient are presented.

Room II – The eternal fame of heroes

Explore the forms of ancient cultural transmission and tradition through art and literature.

Room III – The order of the cosmos

A first journey towards eternity ends from myth to ancient representations of space and time, which take the form of divinities, personifications, and abstract entities that have given rise to our spatial and temporal categories.

Room IV – The works and the days

The second part of the itinerary illustrates the intimate relationship of identification which, despite the cultural and temporal distance that separates us from the ancients, makes them very close to us every time we identify the events of their lives with ours. This section reconstructs, through a series of spectacular recent discoveries, important moments of social life, both in the home and in the city, marked by private and public rituals.

Room V – Divine humans

Antiquity has handed down an inexhaustible variety of ways of representing the individual, from the powerful Neolithic stele-statues to refined classical and Hellenistic compositions. The visitor is accompanied on this journey of discovery and comparison by some extraordinarily representative works, coming not only from the main Italian museums within the National Museum System coordinated by the General Directorate of Museums, but also from very important institutions in Greece.

Many of the works on display are presented to the public for the first time.

There are new discoveries, such as the ceremonial chariot from Civita Giuliana and the statue of Hercules from the Appia Antica Archaeological Park; new acquisitions, such as the Tabula Chigi press release from the Roman National Museum; and above all, numerous masterpieces usually kept in the deposits of museums in Italy and Greece, such as the statue of Santorini.

The exhibition thus represents a further opportunity for the (Re)discovered Deposits project, conceived and promoted by the National Roman Museum, allowing not only to continue the initiative, but also to increase it with the creation of new exhibition stages in the institutes of the Regional Directorate Lazio museums in Nemi and Sperlonga.

All the themes of the exhibition are retraced and explored in the numerous essays published in the catalog published by Electa. On the institutional website of the National Roman Museum there are texts in facilitated language created by the Educational Service of the MNR, specifically dedicated to people with cognitive disabilities and their caregivers, to allow preparation for the visit and facilitate understanding of the exhibition path to this public with special needs.

Inclusive Not Exclusive

Yes, the economy is uncertain. Yes, we are still experiencing inflation. Yes, in many cities, and business sectors, discrimination against age, race, religion, and sexual preferences not only remains but grows. Today, many shoppers are directing their cash to what is joyful and beautiful.

Joy in Spending

Worldwide, the beauty industry is predicted to exceed $716 billion by 2023 and $784.6 billion by 2027 (NPRD/IRI data). What is motivating shoppers to shop? What are they buying?

The beauty industry embraces what is unique, exceptional, different, and special, and because it employs an “inclusive” business model it could become a winning template for all industries losing market share.

The beauty segments are steeped in emotion as beauty brings joy (a universal aspiration) providing experiences that can be classified as play; activities that do not have a purpose other than helping us feel relaxed and happy, keeping our minds focused in the present. The present is where joy lives (mindbodygreen.com).

A key part of the beauty industry is the human touch. From a beauty consultant helping shoppers find the perfect color in a crowded display, to the retail buyer who acts as an editor selecting an assortment for the tastes and interests of customers, this is a people business. The human interaction is one of the most compelling reasons consumers continue to frequent shops (i.e., Sephora), roam the cosmetic counters at department stores and pharmacies (i.e., Macy’s and Duane Reade), attend pricey cosmetology classes, and applaud and follow makeup artists (i.e., Sarah Tanno/Lady Gaga, Gucci Westman/Reese Witherspoon, and Jennifer Anniston).

Every product and retail success has a human in the front or side of the item; someone who has discovered, refined, and/or created an OMG beauty item or look or created a captivating retail environment. Industries have been overrun with algorithms and data; however, there continues to be a need and a want for the human touch.

The industry is a platform for executives who are willing to take a leadership position. Many owners/managers are making bold moves, including adding services to a drug store dominated by household necessities, or heading into the unknown with an innovative product that is counterintuitive, bucking conventional wisdom.

Is It Worth It?

Larissa Jensen, vice president and beauty industry advisor to the NPD Group determined that 70 percent of consumers who indicate they are watching their spending are NOT reducing beauty purchases. On average, Americans spend between $244 and $313 on cosmetics every month.

Progress

In makeup, lip gloss is the fastest-growing sector, outperforming lipstick. Body skin care products grew at more than three times the rate of facial products while fragrance sales increased in the areas of eau de parfum, parfum, and high-end artisanal fragrance juices.

Searching for Fresh and Hygienic

Clean is a driving factor in the beauty buying decision. With no clear definition of clean, shoppers are doing their own research; however, 40 percent rely on retailers to classify products for them. Clean was supplanted during the pandemic by CLINICAL – but clean is rebounding.

Vegan and cruelty-free are keywords consumers spot when looking over reviews. Social responsibility percolates to the top of a shopper checklist with 34 percent of consumers indicating that this attribute is important (NPD).

Ingredients

Women do not want products that contain animal-derived ingredients, parabens, phthalates, mineral oil, gluten, or dyes. Multicultural consumers look to well-established brands of skin care products with natural, certified organic, and ethically sourced ingredients.

Multicultural

In the USA, the female beauty shopper is multi-dimensional and multi-cultural; this is good news for the beauty industry. According to estimates, 129 million multicultural consumers now represent 40 percent of the population and these consumers are responsible for driving nearly all of the US population growth over the last five years. Over 120 million strong and increasing by 2.3 million per year, multicultural populations are the growth engine of the future in the U.S.

Black and brown women already spend approximately $7.5 billion annually on beauty products and the number is projected to grow. According to research from Packaged Facts, the buying power of African Americans has surpassed $1 trillion.

Hispanics, African Americans, Asian Americans, and all other multicultural groups already make up 38% of the U.S. population, with Census Bureau projections showing that multicultural populations will become a numeric majority by 2044.

Committed

Multicultural women, especially Hispanic women, are more committed to beauty routines and trying new products than other women. Acknowledging this fact, brands are responding by introducing new skincare, putting less emphasis on lightening skin tones with a higher priority on products and services that help users achieve a healthy, clear complexion. Latino women in the US report creating complex makeup looks compared to 51 percent of all women, while African American women trend toward embracing a natural beauty appearance (Mintel). In the near future, people of color will represent a majority in America and the beauty industry is positioning itself to capitalize.

Manly Makeup

A research study supports the hypothesis that subtle cosmetics make male faces look more attractive (Batres, C., & Robinson, H. 2022). The men’s makeup market is estimated to reach $276 billion by 2030. The growing trend toward skincare, haircare, and fragrance products among men is thanks to significant brand endorsements by celebrities, encouraging men to purchase cosmetic brands.

Danny Gray, Founder of beauty brand War Paint claims that men, “feel ashamed about using make-up” and studies find that only one in a hundred men wear makeup on a daily basis.

A significant challenge is the small number of specific male-dedicated products. Makeup is frequently designed to be inclusive and education is needed for male consumers to learn why they should select a male-specific product rather than something viewed as unisex. Studies should highlight the fact that men’s testosterone (on average) makes their skin 25 percent thicker than females. In addition, men’s skin produces more sebum resulting in it becoming more acne-prone and oily.

Start Early

Research suggests that 42 percent of men first started practicing skin care between 15-17 y/o; however,

The iconic Maiden’s Tower, or Kız Kulesi, has reopened after a massive restoration project that returned it to its original structure dating from 1725. It originated as a lighthouse and sits on an islet in the Bosphorus Strait, the legendary body of water that flows through Istanbul and connects the Black Sea to the Mediterranean. The 300-year-old tower is both a historic monument and a museum marking the centenary of the Republic of Türkiye.

The restoration was carried out in less than two years, amid difficult weather conditions in the middle of the sea. Archeologists, scientists, historians and artisans relied on both ancient and modern data for the repairs. Utilizing records dating back to the 1700s, 16 tons of steel and 500 tons of reinforced concrete were ripped out and replaced with the original materials outlined in the historical documents. The interior and exterior of the Maiden’s Tower were completely revitalized, with new terraces, walkways and stairs installed for visitors. The restoration project was led by the Turkish Ministry of Tourism and Culture.

A much-loved symbol of Istanbul, the ancient tower has also spawned various legends – from a king building the tower to protect his daughter from the fates to a powerful love between a nun of Aphrodite and a man who swam across the ocean to visit her every night, guided by the light of the tower. The tower also has a star-crossed love of its own, with the Maiden’s Tower and the city’s Galata Tower ‘gazing at each other’ for centuries, but unable ever to meet because of the Bosphorus separating them.

Entrance to the Maiden’s Tower Museum is free. It is open daily from 9am to 8pm and is accessible by ferry from both the European and Asian sides of the city.

From roller coasters to water parks to up-close animal encounters to professional sports, there’s no shortage of all-ages of fun to be had in San Diego this summer. There is an abundance of exciting new additions at some of San Diego’s most beloved locations. In theme parks and experiences, LEGOLAND California, SeaWorld San Diego, the San Diego Zoo and Sesame Place San Diego all have new rides and experiences to share with visitors.

LEGOLAND California debuted Miniland San Diego this year, its most recent addition to its Miniland U.S.A. exhibit, featuring miniature, hand-built versions of American cities such as New York, Washington, D.C., San Francisco and Las Vegas. Created by master builders over thousands of hours, Miniland San Diego features LEGO versions of iconic landmarks inspired by the Gaslamp District, the San Diego Convention Center, Coronado Bridge, Petco Park, Balboa Park and more.

SeaWorld San Diego’s highly anticipated roller coaster, Artic Rescue, launched in spring 2023, taking the title of longest and fastest straddle coaster on the West Coast, with speeds of up to 40 miles per hour. The family-friendly multi-launch ride invites guests to hop on a snowmobile for a chilly adventure as they race through the arctic to rescue endangered animals. Also new this summer is Rescue Jr., a kid-friendly play area where children become park heroes while learning about animal rescue and rehabilitation through exciting hands-on experiences. Featuring thrilling play elements, splash pads, climbing structures, rides, and real-life rescue stories, kids will engage with conservation efforts in a fun and interactive environment.

The San Diego Zoo’s all-new Wildlife Explorer’s Basecamp is now open, inviting children to “go wild” as they learn about nature. Basecamp blends learning with physical activity, inviting explorers to climb, scramble and jump in innovative play areas, visit diverse natural habitats, experience up-close animal encounters and more – all while learning about wildlife conservation.

Belmont Park has big plans in motion for its 100th anniversary in 2025, including opening a new ride. In the meantime, a new interactive climbing tower called Sun Kid Tower will debut this summer, offering thrill seekers views of the Pacific Ocean and Mission Beach boardwalk. The park recently replaced its Control Freak ride with Flip Out, and expanded its Lazerblast Arcade, adding 14 new games and additional prizes.

Sesame Place San Diego is home to family-friendly rides and water slides, shows and parades, and this summer the park will debut Dine with Elmo & Friends, an interactive adventure that includes a buffet-style meal and entertainment. Sesame Place is an accredited Certified Autism Center, with team members trained in sensory awareness, program development and more.

To celebrate the Fourth of July, the USS Midway Museum is hosting a fireworks viewing party from the flight deck of its historic aircraft carrier. In addition to the best view in town for the Big Bay Boom, guests will enjoy live entertainment, barbecue, photo opps and more. Tickets go on sale June 7 at 11 a.m.

Sex is New Religion: Cologne Named Most Sexually Liberated City

eTurboNews:

23 annual LGBT events, four gay pride festivals, 17 gay bars, and 19 sex shops propelled Germany’s Cologne to the top of the world’s most sexually liberated cities list, compiled by a German magazine.

West Hollywood, California, took the second place, with the Netherland’s Amsterdam, Spain’s Madrid, and Germany’s capital city of Berlin completing the top five.

German-based Lust Magazine evaluated each major city’s LGBT scene, assigning points based on the number of gay bars, sex shops, and LGBT events per capita in each location. It also examined the legal standing of gay and non-traditional sexualities, rewarding the most permissive jurisdictions.

This year, Cologne’s array of gay bars and LGBT events bumped it to the top of a global list.

Gay couples can marry in Germany, prostitution is legal, and Germans can legally change their gender without surgery. In Cologne, the city’s left-wing council has had an ‘LGBT office’ since 2010.

Cologne is world famous for its carnival and cathedral,” Lust Magazine’s report said. “But for many residents of this cosmopolitan, tolerant city, sex is the new religion.”

“The city on the Rhine is a true model of liberality and openness, especially in the sexual sense, and residents wholeheartedly welcome like-minded visitors who share their values. Rather than insisting on equality, Cologne celebrates everyone’s uniqueness.”

Cologne has not always been a gay mecca The city is the historic center of German Catholicism, and while Hitler’s NSDAP struggled to establish a foothold in Cologne in the 1930s, social conservatism ruled the city for decades after World War II.

More recently, Cologne authorities were condemned for their tepid response to more than 1,000 rapes and sexual assaults by Middle Eastern and African migrants during the 2015-2016 New Year’s Eve celebrations.

Cologne’s Mayor Henriette Reker was re-elected to her post in 2020, despite causing a major uproar after telling women in the city to travel in groups and “keep at arm’s length” from strange men following the spree of assaults by foreign migrants.

eTurboNews:

The Malta Tourism Authority organized an LGBTQ+ workshop to enhance knowledge, sensitivity and awareness of LGBTQ+ tourism ahead of the upcoming EuroPride Valletta 2023 this coming September.

The workshop is aimed for the tourism industry, trade partners and stakeholders that will be the first to welcome EuroPride travelers to Malta and Gozo. The full day workshop will give insight of what will be expected during EuroPride, such as information regarding inclusive hospitality surrounding the LGBTQ+ traveler. In addition, the economic turnover to be expected will also be discussed during the workshop. This workshop is being organized with the support of Allied Rainbow Communities (ARC).

The destination for EuroPride is usually chosen on the criteria where the presence of LGBTQ+ communities is strong and well-established. Each annual event features parades, concerts and human rights events across different location points within a chosen city.

Malta will be the next destination to host EuroPride 2023. In fact, Malta has once again scored first place on the ILGA Rainbow Europe Map and Index for the eighth consecutive year, with an overall score of 89% achieved for LGBTIQ+ protection and human rights. Such a high score places Malta on the map as an ideal destination for the LGBTQ+ traveler, a place where it is considered safe and inclusive to the community.

“By promoting and embracing the importance of diversity, LGBTIQ+ tourism not only enhances the travel experience but also fosters acceptance, understanding and unity across cultures and communities.”

“As a celebration of these values, we are looking forward to hosting EuroPride this September to reaffirm Malta’s commitment as an open and diverse destination,” remarked Clayton Bartolo, Minister for Tourism.

“By organizing these workshops, with the participation of international experts in the LGBTIQ+ segment, the Malta Tourism Authority is helping the tourism industry to be best prepared to welcome and accommodate the LGBTIQ+ traveler with the deserved sensitivity, inclusivity and awareness. These workshops will cover topics that will range from hospitality to operational values within the industry,” added Carlo Micallef, CEO of Malta Tourism Authority.

Michelle Buttigieg, MTA Representative in North America stated, “We are proud of MTA’s initiative to hold this LGBTQ+ Tourism Workshop, focusing on sensitivity and training to reinforce, and expand, the warm welcome these travelers already receive in Malta. This seminar is especially timely as the Malta Tourism Industry gears up for hosting EuroPride Valletta 2023, September 7–17. Even more important, this LGBTQ+ training seminar will take the Maltese Islands a step beyond EuroPride, and will likely ensure that Malta will continue topping the ILGA’s Rainbow Europe Map for many years to come.” Buttigieg added, “Malta has been a proud and active partner of IGLTA (The International LGBTQ+ Travel Association) for many years and is very appreciative of their support and guidance in organizing this training initiative in Malta.”

Chinese Tourists Eyeing Tanzania for Wildlife Safaris

eTurboNews:

Chinese tourists are eyeing Tanzania, attracted by abundant wildlife resources, the warm beaches of Zanzibar, cultural and historical heritage sites in both – the mainland and the island.

Other than the traditional European and American tourist markets, Tanzania is now eyeing Chinese tourists, mostly ‘photographic’ holidaymakers, to explore the country’s wildlife parks.

China’s fast growing and lucrative outbound travel market has about 150 million Chinese tourists traveling outside their country every year.

Tanzanian Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism had asked the Chinese Embassy in Dar es Salaam to devise joint strategies that would help to reach various parts of China and facilitate travel between China and Tanzania.

Minister of Natural Resources and Tourism, Mohamed Mchengerwa, held discussions earlier with the Chinese Ambassador to Tanzania, Chen Mingjian, and said Tanzania aims to attract more Chinese visitors to its most attractive tourist sites.

Mr. Mchengerwa said that China alone could help Tanzania to reach its target of five million tourists by the year 2025, banking on the strong Chinese outbound tourist market.

Data from the Tanzania Tourist Board (TTB) indicates that about 45,000 tourists from China are expected to visit Tanzania by the end of this year (2023), up from about 35,000 Chinese tourists currently recorded per year, mostly business travelers.

Tanzania is among eight African countries which have been approved by the China National Tourism Administration (CNTA) in Beijing as tourist destination for Chinese travelers.

Other African tourist destinations working on attracting Chinese visitors are Kenya, Seychelles, Zimbabwe, Tunisia, Ethiopia, Mauritius, and Zambia.

Tanzania is currently implementing an aviation agreement with China for Air Tanzania Company Limited (ATCL) to operate direct flights between Tanzania and China, from Dar es Salaam to Guangzhou.

The UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has recognized China as an upcoming major source of outbound tourists in the world.

A group of about 40 Chinese tourism business executives are currently in Tanzania on familiarization tour of Zanzibar beaches, wildlife parks, cultural and historical sites, developing strategies of attracting Chinese holidaymakers and tourism sector investments.

The Chinese tourism executives are expected to hold business discussions with the Tanzanian tourist counterparts, aiming to get to know each other, then create partnerships between the Chinese and Tanzanian tourism players.

The Malta festival will be held from July 10 until July 15. Renowned for its intention to create a synergy between upcoming and headlining musicians, The Malta Jazz Festival is a national and international highlight in the portfolio of festivals produced by Festivals Malta.

The festival launches on July 10 at the Embassy Hotel with an opening concert by Daniel Sant, William Smith, and Dean Montanaro. The festival week proceeds with evening concerts at the Valletta City Theatre featuring The New York Blue Quintet, which is known to be one of the most important exponents of the hard bop tradition, with the participation of New York’s finest Joe Magnarelli and Jeb Patton.

Sandro Zerafa, Artistic Director for Festivals Malta, shared: “The festival is unique in Europe, and it has steadily built a reputation as one of those rare cultural events that combines artistic excellence and popular appeal.”

“In an era where jazz festivals get watered down and stray away from jazz, the Malta Jazz Festival has maintained unfailing artistic integrity whilst attracting new audiences.”

One of the major headlining artists this year is the 23-year-old Grammy winner for “Best New Artist” and “Best Vocal Jazz Album” – Samara Joy. The highly anticipated and rising star’s vocal performance will be at Ta’ Liesse on July 14, also featuring emergent voice, saxophone player, and Blue Note artist Immanuel Wilkins.

The Malta Jazz Festival will also be hosting Raynald Colom, known to be one of the most respected trumpet players in the world, as well as Kurt Rosenwinkel’s quartet featuring Greg Hutchinson, Doug Weiss, and Nicola Andrio. The Laurent Coq Trio and leading male jazz vocalist, Kurt Elling, are also expected to make a return to the Malta Jazz Festival. Elling, and guitarist Charlie Hunter and band will be presenting their funk and soul project SUPERBLUE. Local Jazz veteran Paul Giordimaina and his trio will be paying homage to the late Charles ‘City’ Gatt while Ukraine-based Maltese saxophone player Carlo Muscat and his quartet will be performing music from Muscat’s album Wool.

The Malta Jazz Festival will be held in Valletta, Malta, from July 10–15, 2023. For more information visit: www.festivals.mt/mjf

eTurboNews:

The Latium Experience DMO, a mixed public-private association for promoting and commercializing the tourist flows of 12 Municipalities of Latium, the Italian region headed by Rome, officially announces the Wine Route project, thus launching the Tastings theme, the third of a macro-offer triptych comprising Bike tourism and Foundation cities as well.

This proposal, like the others, is based on the actual characteristics of the territory, with no tourist tinsel. The wine route in the province of Latina is the longest in Italy: it starts from the Lepini Mountains and passes through Aprilia, Sabaudia and San Felice Circeo. Amidst fascinating rural landscapes, one can meet local producers, discuss with winemakers and taste high quality wines, such as Aprilia Doc, Castelli Romani Doc and Circeo Doc, with a wealth of side dishes and recipes either in restaurants or in typical trattorias.

There are two gems:

Picnics in the vineyards of the farms, for relaxing lunches among the rows with suggestive panoramas to admire, and the combination with bike excursions, guaranteed by the expertise of both the DMO and its tour operators.

Latium Experience is a public-private association aiming to promote, market and manage the tourist flows – involving all the actors operating in the area – of 12 Municipalities of Latium (the Italian region headed by Rome): Aprilia, Colleferro, Guidonia, Latina, Maenza, Pomezia, Pontinia, Priverno, Prossedi, Sabaudia, San Felice Circeo, Ventotene. The association also brings together 39 private operators.

The offer is divided into three macro-categories: bike tourism, comprising the routes that run along the canals and connect all the towns, foundation cities, including eight Municipalities, and tastings, enhancing the typical products of the area.

Culture, nature and roots are the themes with which, as in an intriguing storytelling, the rich heritage made available by the places will be organized, making endless business propositions for the benefit of tourists of all ages, backgrounds and origins.

Qatar Airways partnered with Paris Saint-Germain football club to empower Education Above All (EAA) Foundation children through a journey of education and sports. The award-winning airline, alongside its partners, brought children from different backgrounds together, for a once-in-a-lifetime experience with the Paris Saint-Germain football players at the Parc des Princes stadium.

The national carrier of the State of Qatar has been a long-term supporter of EAA Foundation as the resource partner of the foundation, and this latest initiative saw the collaboration with EAA’s schools, which uplifts children facing barriers to education. A dream come true, EAA Foundation children embarked on a journey to Paris where they had the opportunity to accompany the stars of Paris Saint-Germain onto the field before their exciting ‘Ligue 1’ fixture.

Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive, His Excellency Mr. Akbar Al Baker said: “At Qatar Airways, we see the value in supporting and inspiring young people who face barriers to education, which is why we have supported the Educate A Child programme by EAA since 2014. After hosting the biggest sporting event the Middle East has ever seen, the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022TM, we have come to see the role of football in education and its contribution to the overall development of young people.

“We believe that this collaboration with Paris Saint-Germain football club and EAA Foundation brings together education and sports to nurture young minds and inspire more children to participate in sports, which in turn equips them with valuable life skills.”

Education Above All Foundation’s CEO, Mr. Fahad Al Sulaiti, shared his thoughts on the unique partnership: “Sports, particularly football, have an unparalleled capacity to empower and enlighten. They instill invaluable qualities in our youth – teamwork, resilience, and the pursuit of excellence – values that resonate beyond the sporting realm. Our collaboration with Qatar Airways and Paris Saint-Germain has breathed life into these lessons, turning dreams into reality for these children as they join the Paris Saint-Germain stars on the field. This experience transcends the extraordinary; it’s a powerful endorsement of their potential and a shining example of what teamwork can achieve. It ignites a spark that we hope illuminates their educational journey. On behalf of the entire EAA Foundation, I extend a heartfelt thank you to Qatar Airways and Paris Saint-Germain for their steadfast dedication to empowering our future generations through education and sports. Collectively, we’re making an enduring impact.”

Fabien Allegre, Paris Saint-Germain Chief Brand Officer and Paris Saint-Germain Foundation/Endowment Fund Deputy Director, added: “Paris Saint-Germain and the Paris Saint-Germain Foundation/Endowment fund are very pleased to support Qatar Airways’ Education Above All program. This joint commitment is the natural continuation of our partnership. We share with Qatar Airways the same commitment to help young people take-off and reach their full potential.”

Combining the power of education and football, the children created lifelong memories, participating in training with the Paris Saint-Germain Foundation, as well as exploring the mesmerising city. The journey was curated to capture the excitement of Paris, experience the passion of supporting France’s most successful football team, and embody the virtues of sport such as teamwork, co-operation, focus, and discipline.

EAA is a Global Foundation established in 2012, with the aim of building a movement that contributes to human social and economic development through quality education and other welfare programmes and initiatives. EAA currently works in over 60 countries world-wide and has supported 15 million children and youth access their fundamental right to quality education.

Since 2014, Qatar Airways has pledged its support to EAA to provide access to quality education for those children and youth facing barriers. The award-winning airline has raised approximately QAR 19.2 million by collecting donations onboard and matching those donations.

eTurboNews:

The restaurant industry in America clocks in with a US$900 billion price tag value while having to increase pay and benefits. Add to that the National Restaurant Association reporting US restaurant and bar sales are projected to increase about 6% this year to nearly $1 trillion.

Despite the passage of 3 years since the COVID-19 pandemic first struck, the US food service industry is struggling to fill empty staff positions. Recently, staff shortages in restaurants are attributed to mass migration and relocation, causing establishments to struggle to fill vacancies, with the US Census Bureau recently reporting that 26 states experienced an influx of people in 2022, while 25 states saw a population outflow. This leaves customers waiting for service at their favorite dining spots and disrupts local economies.

Moreover, in 2022, 30 states, plus Washington, DC, increased their minimum wages. As of January 1, 2023, The District of Columbia has the highest minimum wage in the country, at $16.50 per hour, followed by Washington ($15.74), California ($15.50), and Massachusetts ($15).

How COVID May Have Created the Digital Restaurant Trend

“The restaurant industry continues to battle staff shortages and operational inefficiencies. Despite the hike in minimum wages, some front-of-house restaurant staff are worried that it will negatively affect the tips they depend on because of misinformation or a lack of understanding of how these increases work,” notes Brian Duncan, President of me&u USA. “Technology is the only way to boost restaurant revenue amid staff shortages and simultaneously elevate the customer experience. A well-integrated tech approach is key to overcoming challenges and ensuring satisfaction.”

According to a Deloitte report from 2021, 57% of customers prefer to use a digital app to order food for off-premises dining, while 64% of customers prefer to place their orders digitally at quick-service restaurants. 71% of diners say online and on-premise restaurant technology enhances their dining experiences.

A 2022 Popmenu study found that 51% of restaurant owners and operators intend to automate more online operations whereas 41% plan to automate more on-premise operations.

“Long waits outside a restaurant means frustrated customers, lower tips, and reduced revenue. Restaurant owners must discover ways to increase revenue and decrease other costs to account for higher wages. At-table ordering enables orders to reach the kitchen quickly and crowded lines are all but eliminated. It ultimately allows customers to order and pay at the table quickly, ensuring bigger checks and more tips for the servers,” concludes Duncan.

eTurboNews:

Travelport, a global technology company that powers travel bookings for hundreds of thousands of travel suppliers worldwide, and Jamie McDonald, a British adventurer better known as “Adventureman”, today announced a new world record – the fastest time to visit the new Seven Wonders of the World, achieved in less than seven days. Confirmed by Guinness World Records, the journey was achieved in 6 days, 16 hours, and 14 minutes, using only public transportation. The challenge was set to Adventureman by Travelport in order to put the company’s modern retail platform, Travelport+, to the test, proving that the company’s technology allows its travel agency partners to simply plan, book and manage even the world’s most complex trip.

“When we began upgrading our agency partners to Travelport+ in 2021, it was with the intent of making the complicated travel industry easier and faster to navigate,” said Greg Webb, Chief Executive Officer at Travelport. “This epic adventure was the ultimate test for our platform – could we take the world’s most complex trip and make it simple? Could we ensure it was easy to service? Would the platform be agile enough to accommodate whatever unforeseen bumps the trip encountered? Six days, sixteen hours and fourteen minutes later, we had our answer: yes, yes and yes. This trip also proves that, after a few challenging years for the industry, travel is most definitely back and better than ever.”

Travelport+ provides global travel agents with modern retail technology that allows them to compare millions of travel routes and select the best one for each individual traveler. Travelbag, a travel agency who has been a longtime partner of Travelport, booked all aspects of Adventureman’s trip via Travelport+, and they were able to search, filter, find, compare and build the most complex itinerary with ease using Smartpoint Cloud.

Adventureman had round-the-clock access to a dedicated Travelbag Travel Specialist who, on his request, tracked evolving travel restrictions, identified schedule changes, and made necessary tweaks to his itinerary in real time. He also was able to access Travelport’s Trip Manager feature on the go, in order to add ancillaries and extras (meals, paid seats, etc.) to his itinerary. For travelers who want to visit one, or all, of the seven modern wonders themselves, Travelbag has a range of packages available, allowing travelers to visit all seven wonders of the world themselves (packages starting from £31,000) or visit an individual wonder (packages starting at £1,300 per person). Depending on each traveler’s individual requirements, Travelbag can tailor-make the perfect holiday.

“At Travelbag, we’ve planned and booked thousands of trips, and yet, even we had never seen an itinerary this complex before,” said Caroline Foxwell, Sales and Service Leader at Travelbag. “The retailing tools from Travelport+ are so powerful – Smartpoint Cloud made booking and servicing this trip so easy, it practically did the job for us. Travelport+ helps us to build the perfect itinerary for our clients, time and again, even when that client is a globetrotting, world record-setting superhero!”

Adventureman began the trip at the Great Wall of China, the world’s longest human-made structure, and the world-record clock started ticking the moment he left the first wonder via toboggan. Second, he visited India’s Taj Mahal – the country’s top tourist destination, which is widely considered a symbol of eternal love. From there, he traveled to Jordan and then by bus to the ancient city of Petra, whose carved rose-red sandstone rock facades, tombs, and temples became even more famous from their role in Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade. Departing Jordan, Adventureman flew to Rome to see its legendary Colosseum, envisioning ancient gladiator battles before he made time for a quick pizza pit stop (the only non-airplane food he consumed during the trip). Christ the Redeemer, the world’s largest art deco statue, brought Adventureman to Brazil, where he was equally in awe of the view from its platform as he was of the statue itself. The sixth wonder, Machu Pichu (an Incan citadel nearly 8,000 feet above sea level) was Adventureman’s favorite: he plans to go back one day and bought a stuffed llama toy there to bring back for his daughter. Finally, after only 6 days, 16 hours and 14 minutes, he reached Chichén Itzá, an archeological site that was a hallowed place of ceremony in the Mayan culture.

For Adventureman, a main focus of the record-breaking trip was raising funds for his charity, the Superhero Foundation. As a child, Jamie was diagnosed with a rare spinal condition called syringomyelia, and doctors warned his parents that he might lose the ability to walk. Through the help of many doctors, hospitals and his family, his health improved, starting him on his lifelong mission of giving back to sick kids around the world. To kick start fundraising efforts, Travelport has donated $22,856, a dollar for every mile that Jamie, a Pride of Britain winner, traveled for this challenge. The money will be utilized to continue the charity’s mission: helping families in need fund treatments, therapies and equipment that aren’t freely available to them through their traditional or local healthcare support system.

“In my previous adventures, I’ve run solo across America (the equivalent of 210 marathons) and have cycled 22,000 kilometers from Thailand to the United Kingdom, and yet, this was certainly my most complex, complicated trip yet,” said Jamie McDonald, better known as Adventureman. “With travel, there are just so many variables – weather, restrictions, delays, customs, traffic, cancellations, you name it. When you’re attempting to set a world record, speed and agility are absolutely key. There was no other partner besides Travelport that could’ve made this all possible.”
For the trip to be endorsed by Guinness World Records,

Adventureman had to abide by several rules:

• Use only scheduled public transportation, with licensed taxi rides unable to exceed 50 kilometers
• Keep a logbook with clearly indexed evidence (receipts, tickets, etc.) supporting each step
• Obtain receipts and/or tickets everywhere available
• Use accurate professional equipment (i.e. GPS tracking equipment)
• Take videos and photos showing the applicant, the location and the date at each site visited
• Get a written or recorded statement from an official member of staff, local dignitary and/or police officer at each site
• Understand that the ‘clock’ starts the moment the challenger leaves the first wonder site, and it does not stop for any reason until the challenger sets foot in the final site

Protecting the environment is of the utmost importance to both Travelport and Adventureman. The company calculated the carbon emissions from Adventureman’s trip using using the Travel Impact Model, a shared framework for calculating air travel emissions maintained by Google and developed as part of Travalyst, an independent not-for-profit organization of which Travelport is a member. Travalyst is working to unify industry tools and information to bring sustainable travel to the mainstream. As such, the total CO2 emissions of the world record trip was 2,523 kg.

Travelport will remove these emissions with high-quality carbon dioxide removal services from Climeworks.

Sometimes wine is described as complex due to eye, nose, and palate experiences, but calling Amarone complex is like calling Einstein smart!

eTurboNews:

Producing Amarone – from the terroir through the long finish is a multifaceted process and adventure that embraces tradition, science, culture, economics, and market demand.

OOPS

Folklore suggests that Amarone was produced by chance and not design; an over-extended fermentation process of Recioto enabled the yeast to consume most of the sugar content and the outcome produced a drier wine with a high alcohol by volume (ABV) percentage. The outcome? The birth of Amarone, a brand-new wine.

File Under Who Knew

Amarone (Italian = Big Bitter) wine is produced in Italy and the technique of dehydration has been popular since the Romans used the method in the production of Rhaetian wine (sweet wine produced in the hills around Verona). In 1600 BC (Ancient Anatolia) the technique became popular throughout the Greco-Roman classical world.

The first written evidence explicitly mentioning the production of wines using partially dehydrated Valpolicella grapes in Verona dates to the fifth century, in a letter written by Cassiodorus, King Theodoric’s minister in Ravenna to the senators of the Venetian canonry, seeking to obtain the procurement of a Sweet, Reinforced and Fortified Wine.

Natural sun drying, whether on or off the vine is still considered the most traditional and commonly used method for withering grapes in many Mediterranean countries. Amarone (as a name) first appeared on bottle labels from the Veneto region in 1939; however, the wine was not produced on a regular basis until 1953 and, the Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) status was not assigned until December 1990.

Rules

Because Amarone is a DOCG wine the production process must follow a set protocol (some mandatory; others optional):

A.      Mandatory

1.       Grape selection (autochthonous/indigenous/local cultivars include)

·         Corvina + Corvinone (45-95 percent)

Corvina is the signature grape (Corvo = crow) because ripe berries are very dark, almost bluish recalling the plumage of the bird. Grapes produce oval berries with good acidity and medium tannins. Amarone produces a wine with a ruby red color, longevity, and hints of red fruit.

·         Corvinone. An independent varietal. Berry size is an advantage in terms of yield and speeds harvesting; gives Amarone structure and spicy notes

·         Rondinella (5-30 percent)

(Italian = little swallow; or due to V shape leaf resembles the tail of a swallow; or because birds appreciate the small berries; or the color recalls the swallow’s coat color). Berries are smaller than other grapes (round and dark colored), with a thick skin; delivers aromatic notes with hints of red fruit and floral scents.

B.      Optional (beginning in 2003)

·         Molinara (Italian = miller)

Due to the consistent quantity of pruine, (a natural yeast on the berries’ skin), bunches look like they have been sprinkled with flour. Light in color, the skin is pink and almost transparent. Nicknamed salty grape because of its low acidity and low tannins. Gives Amarone a fresh mineral note.

Hand Harvesting. Traditional Methods

Alaska Airlines unveiled its newest aircraft paint theme today – Xáat Kwáani – designed by the talented Alaska Native artist Crystal Kaakeeyáa Rose Demientieff Worl. Xáat Kwáani means “Salmon People” in the Alaskan Tlingit language and refers to the spiritual link between the people who interact with the beloved salmon and all of us who benefit from their stewardship of the environment.
Using Northwest Coast formline art, the salmon design by Worl is a one-of-a-kind work that honors salmon, culture, artistic expression, and language. Traditional formline art dates back thousands of years and is a two-dimensional design style of the Northwest Coast.

“Every time I looked at an Alaska plane, I couldn’t help but visualize the salmon being in formline, or having some sort of design that represents identity. I can’t help but look at things and see how to Indigenize them,” said Worl. “I have high hopes this project will encourage people to learn and embrace Indigenous culture and values.”

Through her art, Worl aims to bring attention to Indigenous culture and to pass on ancestral values to a new generation.
“Crystal Worl has a love of monumental art — most recently murals gracing the sides of buildings in Juneau and Anchorage for locals and visitors to enjoy. And we had a large blank canvas — a 737-800,” said Marilyn Romano, regional vice president, Alaska Airlines. “During our first conversation, Crystal shared her desire to paint an Alaska Airlines plane — she has flown with us most of her life. Salmon as a focus was intentional and Crystal shares the relationship between salmon and Native people through storytelling and artistic design.”

Salmon has a special meaning and significance in the state of Alaska, the Pacific Northwest and along the West Coast. Some travel as far as 600 miles each way, each uniquely adapted to its particular river system, ocean and watershed environment.

The Alaska Airlines Boeing 737-800 is the first livery of a U.S. airline fleet to have the name of the plane in an Alaska Native language and the first time Alaska Airlines has featured a language besides English on the main door of an aircraft.

“This will be significant to have Indigenous language on an airplane,” said Worl. “People will see it, they’ll read it, they’ll try to say ‘Xáat Kwáani’ (Salmon People), and they’ll want to know more and be curious to learn about it and want to feel connected to it. I’m excited to be part of this.”

The aircraft will begin flying on May 12, 2023, with an inaugural flight from Anchorage through Southeast Alaska. First stop of Alaska Airlines flight 62 will be through Crystal’s hometown of Juneau, the state’s capital, before it continues through Sitka, Ketchikan and Seattle.

Russia Plans 'American Village' for 'Conservative' Western Expats

eTurboNews:

The government of Russia’s Moscow Region has allegedly approved the project to build an “American Village” for 200 families of prospective ‘conservative immigrants’ from the US and Canada.

According to one of the authors of the project, Moscow-based immigration attorney Timur Beslangurov, the construction of the settlement will start in Moscow Region, in the Serpukhov district, which is south of Russian capital, in 2024.

The prospective migrants from the USA and Canada are expected to fund the settlement themselves, Russian attorney announced.

Beslangurov claims that tens of thousands of ‘conservative’ Americans and Canadians, including the ones with no Russian roots at all, would ‘like to move’ to Russia.

Most of the Western expats who want to move to Russia “strongly believe in the prediction that Russia will remain the only Christian country in the world,” Russian immigration attorney said.

For many years, Russia has portrayed itself as a bastion of “traditional” values in contrast with “decadent and decaying” Western liberalism, as its relations with the West have disintegrated over Russia’s 2014 annexation and occupation of Ukrainian Crimea and its 2022 full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

“Basically, they (the prospective immigrants) are Orthodox Christians, Americans and Canadians who, for ideological reasons, want to move to Russia,” he said.

“The reasons (for desire to move to Russia) are known, it’s the imposition of radical left-liberal values in the West, which basically have no limits. Today they have 70 genders, tomorrow who knows what,” Beslangurov declared, echoing Russian dictator Putin’s frequently deployed gripes about West’s comparative gender freedom.

According to Putin, Russia is in a ‘unique position’ to defend and spread conservative views, which he called ‘traditional Russian moral and religious values.’

“Many normal people do not understand this, and they want to emigrate. Many choose Russia but face a huge number of bureaucratic problems related to the imperfection of Russian immigration laws,” Beslangurov adds.

One potential group of immigrants are traditionalist Catholics who are ‘white Americans with many children,’ which the US government considers ‘domestic terrorists,’ the project advocate said.

No Russian government officials have officially confirmed plans for the settlement construction yet.

Russia has ranked among the world’s worst destinations for Western expats in recent years. It has also experienced a major slump in inbound tourism and other foreign arrivals after its aggression in Ukraine.

Russia claimed earlier this month that more foreigners are entering the country this year though, but it’s visitors from China and Central Asian nations, such as Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, who primarily contributed to the increase in visitor numbers.

Finnair has launched an exclusive new music video to celebrate its centenary later this year.

The new song, performed by the Finnair Singers, brings the fun of flying to the ground as listeners can get set for take-off with the sights and sounds from a Finnair flight.

Inspired by the airline’s elevated long-haul experience, customers can immerse themselves into authentic Finnish hospitality from the comfort of their home.

The Finnair Singers have been singing through the skies since 1949, uniting the airline’s employees with their love of music.

Starting as an all-male choir, the Finnair Singers are now an exclusively female choir, celebrating the rise of women within aviation.

Anssi Partanen, Finnair Market Director UK & Ireland, said: “As we gear up to celebrate our centenary later this year, we are excited to be launching a new music video with the Finnair Singers.

“Our people have been at the heart of Finnair since it was founded in 1923, so it’s only right that they’ve come together to bring our centenary to customers around the world.

“Bringing the sights and sounds of air travel to life, we know this new video will hit the right note among customers.”

Filmed at the flag carrier’s home hub in Helsinki, customers can get a behind-the-scenes look at Finnair’s operation and the role of its employees.

Last month, the Nordic carrier also partnered with Finnish music producer and rising star Perttu to release a new and exclusive playlist, named “Journey”, on Spotify.

The soothing soundscape is designed to take customers on a relaxing journey through Nordic skies.

Finnair’s new centenary music video is available to stream on YouTube and across the airline’s social channels.

The Semi-Finals will take place before this on Tuesday, May 9, and Thursday, May 11.

The United Kingdom is hosting EUROVISION on behalf of Ukraine in 2023

Here’s a recap of everything that’s happened since the Kalush Orchestra lifted the Eurovision trophy back in May 2022.

The 67th Contest, organized by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and the BBC on behalf of 2022 winners Ukraine, will be held at Liverpool Arena on May 9, 11 & 13, 2023.

Of the 37 nations taking part, 31 will compete in 2 Semi-Finals with 10 successful acts from each Semi-Final joining 4 (France, Germany, Italy, and Spain) of the Big 5, with hosts the United Kingdom and Ukraine in the Grand Final.

The BBC agreed to stage the 2023 event on behalf of Ukrainian broadcaster UA:PBC following their win at this year’s Contest in Turin with Kalush Orchestra’s “Stefania.”

Eurovision has officially begun as the first semi-final in Liverpool is completed.

Two days after the dramatic first semi-final, the second knock out stage of this year’s Eurovision Song Contest comes live from Liverpool on Thursday evening.

Sixteen countries will compete for 10 places in Saturday night’s grand Finale.

Just a week after the coronation of King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla, Spot is on in Liverpool.

King Charles IIIand The Queen Consort visited the venue in Liverpool on Tuesday and unveiled the event’s set. They also met singerMae Muller who is on home turf at the Eurovision Song Contest, representing the United Kingdom in Liverpool with her pop hit “I Wrote A Song.”

BBC Director General Tim Davie said: “It is an honor that His Majesty The King and Her Majesty The Queen Consort have come here today to reveal the fantastic staging for our Eurovision Song Contest programming.”

The King and Queen Consort also pushed a button to officially light up the arena for the first time. The venue has been fitted with more than 2,000 specialist lighting fixtures with a pink, blue, and yellow color scheme to match this year’s Eurovision logo. The cabling for the lighting, sound, and video could reach 8 miles if rolled out.

160 million viewers will be watching the final around the world, while around 6,000 fans will be in the arena for each of the shows.Tickets have sold out, but there will be a Eurovision Village fan zone for thousands to watch the event on big screens, and a 2-week cultural festival in the city will also run alongside the competition.

The BBC, together with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), will organize the contest in consultation with UA:PBC, Ukraine’s public broadcaster, and last year’s winners of the contest.

The Grand Final for this year’s contest, hosted in Liverpool on behalf of 2022 winners Ukraine, will open with last year’s winners Kalush Orchestra and a powerful performance titled “Voices of a New Generation.” During the Eurovision Flag Parade of all 26 Grand Finalists, viewers will be treated to a unique performance by some iconic past Ukrainian Eurovision contestants.

For the first interval performance, the United Kingdom’s very own spaceman Sam Ryder will return to the Eurovision stage before being followed by “The Liverpool Songbook” – a celebration of the host city’s incredible contribution to the world of pop music.

The BBC has brought together 6 iconic past Eurovision acts – Italy’s Mahmood, Israel’s Netta, Iceland’s Daði Freyr, Sweden’s Cornelia Jakobs, Duncan Laurence from the Netherlands, plus Liverpool’s very own Sonia, celebrating 30 years since she came second at Eurovision.

Martin Green, BBC’s Managing Director of the Eurovision Song Contest, added: “We are incredibly proud to be hosting the Eurovision Song Contest on behalf of Ukraine and welcoming delegations from 37 countries to Liverpool. The BBC is committed to making the event a true reflection of Ukrainian culture and showcasing British creativity to a global audience.”

In the Second Semi-Final on Thursday, May 11, the theme “Music Unites Generations” explores the connection between generations of Ukrainians and the music they love.

United by Music

The slogan is “United by Music” and demonstrates the unique partnership between the United Kingdom, Ukraine, and host city Liverpool to bring the Eurovision Song Contest to audiences across the globe and to shine a light on the incredible power of music to bring communities together. It also reflects the very origins of the contest, developed to bring Europe closer together through a shared television experience across different countries.

Protea Hotels by Marriott and Marriott Bonvoy, Marriott International’s award-winning travel program and marketplace, have unveiled Orlando Pirates F.C. themed hotel rooms, designed to give football enthusiasts a unique and immersive hospitality experience.

Available at the Protea Hotel Fire & Ice! by Marriott® Johannesburg Melrose Arch, the Orlando Pirates-themed rooms are a must-visit for all fans of the club.

Created by local interior designer, Latoyah Mei, the room is adorned with symbolic black and white stripes showcasing the club’s proud heritage and success over the years. Guests will be welcomed with an iconic mural featuring some of the most legendary players to have graced the fields and hearts of many in the club’s history. Along with modern amenities, the rooms will also feature football memorabilia and natural elements to create a space that is minimal and contemporary.

The themed room serves as a creative celebration of local design, following a request to qualifying South African interior designers based on their experience and expertise, to partake in the Protea Hotels by Marriott and Marriott Bonvoy Orlando Pirates Room Designs. A shortlist of four designers were invited to submit their storyboards. Ultimately, Latoyah Mei founder of Lint Design House was the successful candidate and was selected by the partnership parties, as the official interior designer of the unique Orlando Pirates themed room. Mei’s inspiration was to create a nostalgic atmosphere for the room to evoke a “wow factor” feeling in fans.

“I was intentional about creating a space that is impactful and inspiring, evoking emotions that delivers a memory in one’s mind while experiencing a space. The mural is one of my favourite elements of the room – it really captures the rich history of the Buccaneers and Soweto in an amazing way,” Latoyah Mei comments. “It is really important to me that with each stay, supporters can appreciate something new when they look around the room.”

“The Orlando Pirates-themed rooms at the Protea Hotel Fire & Ice! By Marriott® Johannesburg Melrose Arch offer an immersive and memorable experience that we believe will be cherished by our members and fans,” commented Sean Maher, Market Vice President, South Africa, Marriott International.

“Plans for more themed rooms across the country are underway and we look forward to unveiling these new experiences to our guests soon,” adds Maher.

“We are proud to align ourselves with Marriott Bonvoy, our accommodation partner. Orlando Pirates is a distinct and iconic brand not only in South Africa but also in the African continent and beyond. The Skull & Crossbones were a symbol of hope during the apartheid era and Orlando Pirates continues to be a beacon of hope to all our people,” said Thandi Merafe, the Club’s Media Director.

“We pride ourselves in aligning with brands who have a shared vision and aspiration to deliver excellence to our people. Our fans are the lifeblood of our Club, and we’re excited to offer them an experience that truly embodies the spirit and history in the home city of Orlando Pirates,” adds Merafe.

The launch of the themed rooms follows the announcement of Marriott Bonvoy’s exclusive multi-year partnership to become the official accommodation partner of Orlando Pirates Football Club last year. The partnership offers fans incredible opportunities to experience football in South Africa at a whole new level through unrivalled and exclusive access and events. Fans can now get 15% off standard rates when they book at participating hotels across South Africa.

eTurboNews:

Africa’s most thrilling and exciting music and entertainment event, FESTAC Africa, will take place at the Arusha International Conference Center, Tanzania in the next few days.

In less than two weeks, FESTAC Africa will be staged in Arusha, Tanzania’s northern tourist city with an array of arts, fashion, music, storytelling, poetry, film, short stories, travel, tourism, hospitality, food and dance through live performances from various countries in Africa and across the world.

FESTAC Africa 2023 will focus on Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance (ESG) initiatives to ensure African culture in the long term is sustained and preserved in an eco-friendly way.

The festival is expected to bring cultural, hospitality and tourism experts to share insights on how Africa can offset its carbon footprint and also do a workshop to teach organizations how to report accurately on ESG.

Festival participants will have opportunities to experience the continent through travel and tourism and explore Arusha and Tanzania during the festival week.

They will also have opportunities to visit some of Africa’s leading wildlife parks, including the Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti National Park and the spice island of Zanzibar or hiking Mount Kilimanjaro.

Supported by the African Tourism Board (ATB), FESTAC 2023 will be taking places from May 21 to 27 May, showcasing Africa’s richest cultures, all aiming to attract local and foreign tourists to visit the continent.

African heroes and heroines left their countries and went to exile in different countries in a quest to free Africa and her people from colonial rule, with the armed struggle as their weapon.

The event will also provide a platform for businesses to connect with the right network and a space for collaboration to showcase its latest products and services, connecting marketing professionals and buyers. About 100 to 150 exhibitors are expected at the festival.

“Africa is inviting you to Arusha, Tanzania to continue the fight for total emancipation of Africa, using a different weapon, by uniting her people through music, culture, heritage, tourism, business, networking, trade, hospitality and so much more”, the event organizers said.

The forthcoming FESTAC Africa 2023, Destination Arusha is the World’s Fourth Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture.

It will provide a space for collaboration and showcasing the latest products and services, connecting marketing professionals and buyers. It is all about connecting people with people, organizers said.

FESTAC Africa 2023 will also explore Tanzania’s spectacular landscapes and wildlife treasures on this exceptional safari adventure which lends itself perfectly to Great Migration experiences.

Apart from wildlife parks, participants will get a chance to experience and learn about Tanzania’s famous “Tanzanite gemstone” and the historical business city of Dar es Salaam or “Haven of Peace”.

Key and leading African personalities have aired their views over FESTAC 2023 event, wishing it great success during its weeklong staging.

“My vote has always been for diversity, hybridity, even mongrelisation, the dynamic crucible of the creative adventure. Mentally and spiritually, even long before Festac the First, I have always reserved a cabin on this vessel”, said Professor Wole Soyinka, Noble Prize Winner in Literature.

Zanzibar President Dr. Hussein Mwinyi noted that the event will bring together key personalities in arts, cultural heritage, tourism and leadership.

Former President of Nigeria Chief Olusegun Obasanjo had congratulated the FESTAC 2023 organizers and said that all have played a role in putting together this event.

Dr. Julius Garvey, the Chairman of Marcus Garvey Institute said: “At the heart of every society and every individual in that society is a belief system that shapes its ideas, culture, day-to-day activities and future goals”.

“This is derived from tradition, a history, and knowledge of past experience”, said Dr. Garvey.

Brussels Pride - The Belgian & European Pride Program Revealed

eTurboNews:

On Saturday 20 May, Brussels Pride – The Belgian & European Pride – will once again put the LGBTQIA+ community in the spotlight and decorate the streets of Brussels in the colors of the rainbow. This year, the theme is “Protect the Protest”. A call to respect the fundamental right to protest, which is still too often violated throughout the world. From the Pride Parade and the Pride Village to the Rainbow Village, everything effort will be made to celebrate diversity and love without barriers.

Brussels opens Europe’s Pride season. The organizers expect no less than 150,000 people to march in defense of their rights and to celebrate diversity in the streets of Brussels. This year, Brussels
Pride is, more than ever, keen to underline the importance of this event to ensure that the fundamental rights of the LGBTQIA+ community are maintained.

Protect the Protest

Demonstrating is a human right. Today, this right is subject to all kinds of pressures all over the world. In Europe as well. This year, Brussels Pride 2023 has chosen “Protect the Protest” as its theme, to emphasise that everyone, without hindrance or violence, can exercise this fundamental right.

Pride Week – 10 to 19 May 2023

The traditional Mini-Pride on Wednesday 10 May 2023 marks the start of Pride Week. The procession will pass by Manneken-Pis, who’ll be dressed in a costume designed for the occasion.

The procession will also pass Grands Carmes, a venue that will host 10 days of conferences, concerts, performances and inclusive sports activities organised by LGBTQIA+ activists, associations and collectives. The Mini-Pride parade finishes at the LGBTQIA+ bars of the Saint-Jacques district. During Pride Week, an inclusive program will also be offered by cultural centers, museums and emblematic places in the Brussels-Capital Region.

Brussels Pride – The Belgian & European Pride – 20 May 2023
Pride Parade

Floats are making their long-awaited return to the Pride Parade. The parade sets off at 14:00 on the Mont des Arts and makes its way along the streets of the city center, passing, of course, close to
the unmissable Saint-Jacques district. This year, the parade will echo loudly to the theme of Brussels Pride: “Protect the Protest”, to claim the fundamental right to protest, which is too often flouted around the world.

The Pride Village

As every year, associations and institutions will be present. The associations will inform the public about their work and the current issues in terms of community rights at national and international level. The institutions will show their support to the community and their initiatives in favor of a more inclusive society, which is a daily struggle.

2 stages to celebrate and dance

LGBTQIA+ artists will be lighting up two stages in the centre of the capital. On the bill, among others, the Sing out Brussels Choir, DJ iNess, DJ Manz, DJ Shaft Crew and several candidates from Drag Race Belgium. Numerous other artists will be performing on the stages at the Mont des Arts and the Bourse. Needless to say, these concerts, DJ sets and performances are bound to be unforgettable.

The Rainbow Village and its LGBTQIA+ establishments, located in the Saint-Jacques district in the heart of the capital, are, once again, major partners of the event.

In total, some one hundred partners, associations and artists will be contributing to the fight for a more open and tolerant society.

Brussels Pride is an inclusive event open to all. To ensure the safety and well-being of all, Safe Place and Safe Health zones will be present at several strategic locations. These areas are open to
anyone who needs to take a break (Safe Place) or to be taken care of by medical staff in case of discomfort and/or to report any inappropriate or offensive behavior regarding their gender and/or identity (Safe Health).

The cultural sector is joining the event and programming LGBTQIA+ artists and projects in collaboration with Brussels Pride – The Belgian & European Pride. The Design Museum Brussels,
among others, presents its Brussels Queer Graphics exhibition, produced in collaboration with the Structure for Interdisciplinary Research on Gender, Equality and Sexuality (STRIGES). The
exhibition highlights the visual language of the LGBTQIA+ communities in Brussels, from the 1950s to today.

Finally, in the week leading up to Brussels Pride, many buildings across the Brussels-Capital Region will be illuminated and decorated in the colours of the rainbow flag.

Brussels Pride – The Belgian & European Pride is an opportunity to celebrate diversity but also to defend and demand LGBTQIA+ rights, all with the aim of making society more inclusive and
egalitarian. Beyond its festive aspect, Brussels Pride is, more than ever, an opportunity to assert the rights and claims of the community and re-launch the political debate.

eTurboNews:

The history of Samarkand is millenary. Its presumable foundation dates back more than 2,700 years (the foundation of Rome dates to 2,273 years). Samarkand was once the wealthiest city in Central Asia and prospered from its location along the Silk Road, a must-see on the land and sea trade routes between China and Europe.

The Northern Road consisted of 2 routes: one from Urumqi in China continued to the city of Alma Alta in Kazakhstan and continued to Kokan in Eastern Uzbekistan; the other from Kashgar in China’s Xinjiang Autonomous Region continued to Temez in Uzbekistan and Balkh in Afghanistan.

The Silk Road

The Silk Road’s history has its roots in the distant 2nd century BC. The expression “Silk Road” was only recently coined while labeling routes so ancient in time. Approximately 8,000 km of routes by land, to which are added by sea and by river, have not had a specific name. In 1877, about 142 years ago, the German geographer and traveler, Baron Ferdinand von Richthofen, in the introduction of his book Diaries from China, named the commercial and communication network “Die Seidenstrasse” or “the Silk Road.” [quote: A.Napolitano].

Samarkand – Ambassador of Uzbekistan in the World

The history of Samarkand with its millenary mosques, minarets, madrasas (Islamic universities) still erected to witness the architectural wonders of skilled engineers, mosaic artists, and “sparkling colors of the turquoise domes that change color with the changing of the sky” [quote: F.Cardini], and under the night lights, enchant and makes one dream.

Tamerlane – Amir Temur

The city’s museums keep artifacts and history from various eras, the oldest existing Koran, and the history of the leaders: Tamerlane, Genghis Khan, Alexander the Great, and Jalangtuš Bahadur “The Fearless,” considered the Founding Father of Modern Uzbekistan.

The Revival

The state committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan for tourism development has planned interventions in the country until 2025 with the aim of favoring the realization of Infrastructure, the creation of an accessible and comfortable tourist environment implementation, and the strengthening of the social role of external and internal tourism, as well as improving the quality and competitiveness of the tourism product of Uzbekistan in the national and global markets. In support is the abolition of entry visas for about 60 countries – expandable, and strengthening of the tourist police corps in each city.

“Training a very young population to new professions, appealing to collaboration with neighboring countries and with the international community” is the course.

The International University of Tourism and Cultural Heritage of Samarkand has the task of training the young talents necessary to manage the future operators of the country’s tourist flows. This is in addition to the plan that provides for an internship abroad with the obligation to return to serve the country.

UNWTO Heading to Samarkand

The city administration is preparing to welcome 2 million guests from all over the world starting in 2023, when the city will host the 25th United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) General Assembly from October 16-20, 2023, in Samarkand. The expansion of the Samarkand airport was completed for the occasion.

“Silk Road Samarkand”

On the eastern outskirts of the city, the “new” Samarkand was built – a luxury tourist complex of almost 300 hectares. It is called Silk Road Samarkand. Here, modern buildings have sprung up overlooking the Grebnoy canal, along with artificial waterways which in the Soviet era were used for training sessions for the national rowing team.

Around the canal are 8 new luxury hotels, shopping areas, and a convention center which in 2021 hosted the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit with the participation of President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, Turkish leader Recep Tayyp Erdogan, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi.

Eternal City

Eternal City

A citadel, the “Eternal City,” has arisen on the other side of the canal. It is a great attraction for the locals and by the timid approach of European tourists. The entrance to the Eternal City takes up the traditional motifs of the majestic arches of the Registan, the main square of ancient Samarkand. Inside, there are about 50 buildings with shops, squares, restaurants, and artisan shops that show off traditional costumes.

The Capital

Tashkent is the largest city in Central Asia by population and is an important and political, economic, cultural, and scientific center of the country.

The Soviet-style city features wide streets, parks, 3 of the world’s most beautiful subway lines, and a modern railway line that connects major historic cities with the “Afrosyob” high-speed train. International chain hotels as well as Italian fashion and catering are at home here.

Khazrati-Imama and Suzuk-Ota monumental complexes include the state museum of the history of the Temurids – an empire founded by Tamerlane-warlord of Turco-Mongol origins (1370/1405), the Museum of the History of Uzbekistan, and the Museum of Applied Art Arts, as well as vast parks of the modern concept.

Finally, Bukhara adds to the cultural and historical attractions of the Great Silk Road where, in addition to the monuments, the “Ark Fortress” stands out – the oldest architectural and archaeological monument in Bukhara. It rises almost 20 meters above the level of the surrounding territory of about 4 hectares.
