Hawaiian Airlines started this lucrative airline route between the United States and Japan in 2012.
In April 2012, Hawaiian Airlines suspended its daily service to Fukuoka on June 29, 2014, with the final return light back to Honolulu on June 30, 2014. Five years later, in 2019, the airline resumed this route again until COVID-19 changed the aviation world.
Hawaiian Airlines restarted its three-times-weekly service between Honolulu and Fukuoka, returning as the only carrier connecting the two cities with passenger and cargo service. Departing guests in Honolulu (HNL) and Fukuoka (FUK) were treated to music, lei, and welcome gifts. At HNL, remarks were made by Jon Snook, EVP and chief operations officer at Hawaiian Airlines, and Ed Sniffen, director for the Department of Transportation – Airports.
After launching Fukuoka, Japan, service from Honolulu, Hawaii, in April 2012, Hawaiian Airlines suspended its daily service to Fukuoka on June 29, 2014, with the final return flight to Honolulu on June 30, 2014. Now, five years later, this route is again going to be resumed by the airline.
In 2012 when Hawaiian Airlines initially launched flights between the two destinations, it was estimated that this route would generate $156 million in visitor spending in the islands each year and $17 million in tax revenues.
On November 26, 2019, Hawaiian Air resumed flights between Fukuoka and Honolulu.
There have long been solid historical ties between Hawaii and Fukuoka – the ancestral home of many of the state’s residents. Many families in Hawaii have relatives from Fukuoka or Kyushu, the island that Fukuoka is a part of.
