African Tourism Board Honors International Day of African Child

eTurboNews:

Marking the annual International Day of the African Child, the African Tourism Board had explained the role which tourism plays in the development of African children welfare, directly and indirectly.

While the relationship between tourism and child welfare is complex, there are several ways in which the tourism industry can contribute to the well-being of children in Africa, African Tourism Board (ATB) President Cuthbert Ncube said through a message.

“Tourism is a major contributor to economic growth in many African countries. Increased tourism revenue can lead to more public resources being available for social services, including education, healthcare, and child protection,” Mr. Ncube said.

“When governments invest in these areas, it can lead to better overall welfare for children”, he added.

Tourism industry creates jobs and employment opportunities for local communities, which can have a positive impact on child welfare and when parents have stable employment and income, they are better able to provide for their children’s basic needs, mostly food, shelter and education, said the ATB President.

He said that many tourism initiatives in Africa focus on community-based tourism, which aims to involve and empower local communities in the planning, management and benefits accrued of tourism. This approach can lead to improved infrastructure, access to education and healthcare services for children in those communities.

“Tourism can also play a role in raising awareness about the challenges that African children face. Many tourists are drawn to Africa for its rich cultural heritage, wildlife and natural beauty. As they learn more about the continent and its people, they may be more inclined to support initiatives aimed at improving child welfare”, Mr. Ncube noted.

On tourism and travel philanthropy for African children, the ATB President said that tourists and tourism companies may engage in philanthropy or volunteer work to support projects aimed at improving the lives of children in Africa.

“This could include funding for schools, orphanages and healthcare facilities or participating in hands-on projects like building classrooms or teaching English”, he pointed out.

“However, it’s important to note that tourism can also have negative effects on child welfare in some cases. For instance, an increase in sex tourism can lead to the exploitation of children”, he said.

Furthermore, tourism development can sometimes lead to the displacement of communities, which can disrupt children’s lives and access to vital services.

In order to maximize the positive impact of tourism on African children’s welfare, it is crucial for governments, tourism operators and local communities to work together to promote responsible and sustainable tourism practices that prioritize the well-being of children and their families.

The ATB President highlighted other key areas for children welfare and development in Africa which are education, health and welfare of children in several ways of which tourism can contribute.

While the direct impact of tourism on these areas may vary depending on the region and the specific tourism activities, the overall contributions can be significant.

Tourism revenue can provide governments with additional resources to invest in education including building schools, providing educational materials and training teachers.

In some cases, tourism operators may also actively support education by sponsoring schools, offering scholarships or partnering with local educational institutions to improve the quality of education.

On increased access to education, tourism can lead to the development of infrastructure such as roads and transportation networks then making it easier for children in remote areas to access educational facilities.

Community-based tourism initiatives may also provide opportunities for local children to learn new skills, languages or gaining exposure to different cultures and ideas.

The revenue generated from tourism can also be allocated to improving healthcare services such as building clinics, hospitals and providing essential medical supplies and equipment.

In some cases, tourists or tourism companies may engage in philanthropic efforts to support local healthcare initiatives like funding vaccination campaigns or providing medical training to local healthcare providers.

Hawaii Tourism after COVID-19 to be set by Native Hawaiian John de Fries

eTurboNews:

His contract, therefore, concludes on September 15, 2023. De Fries made the announcement to the Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA) Board of Directors during a special board meeting today.

The board invited De Fries to consider an extension of his contract in a March 30, 2023, meeting. Following the conclusion of the legislative session, De Fries informed the board on May 9 that he would decline that extension.

“It has been an honor to serve the communities and people of our islands these past three years and I will support the board and staff during this transition in leadership of HTA,” said De Fries. “I am incredibly proud of our passionate, unwavering team of professionals at HTA and all that is being accomplished in our communities to improve the well-being of Hawaii. I extend my gratitude to the HTA Board for their support of our critical work in accelerating HTA’s focus on improved destination management and increased visitor education and changing our collective outlook toward tourism for the long-term benefit of our kama‘āina, our native culture, and the places we hold dear throughout Hawaii. I’d also like to thank the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and Legislature for working together and making it possible for HTA to continue its work in the coming fiscal year.”

De Fries took the helm of HTA to lead Hawaii’s visitor industry in September 2020 amidst the global COVID-19 pandemic and state’s self-quarantine requirement for travelers at a time when visitor spending and arrivals were nearly at a standstill. In September 2020, visitor arrivals were down 97.4 percent with only 18,868 visitors as compared to September 2019.

Building on HTA’s 2020-2025 Strategic Plan which articulated the need for destination management, under De Fries’ leadership, HTA developed three-year Destination Management Action Plans for each island. This community-first, community-led approach to rebuilding, redefining, and resetting tourism is making positive strides as HTA works in collaboration with fellow government agencies, visitor industry partners, and community members toward a regenerative model of tourism for all of Hawaii.

De Fries also led an operational restructuring beginning in June 2021, continuing HTA’s pivot from an agency that was primarily focused on marketing through Hawaii Revised Statute 201B to a more effective destination management organization.

HTA Board Chair George Kam credited De Fries for putting tourism on a new course and doing so at a time when the industry was facing its greatest economic challenge in decades.

“John has done an admirable job fulfilling his three-year contract during the most challenging period in recent Hawaii history. At a time when we needed a strong, visionary leader to calmly guide us forward out of troubling circumstances, John was there for HTA.”

Together with numerous community and industry partners throughout the state, HTA continues to mindfully guide and support the implementation of destination management to advance a regenerative model of tourism, helping to resuscitate Hawaii’s economy well ahead of projections. In the first four months of 2023, total visitor spending increased significantly by 21.7 percent to $7.09 billion despite fewer arrivals compared to the pre-pandemic first four months of 2019, continuing the trend of higher visitor spending with fewer visitors to Hawaii.

US Visa Restrictions for Undermining Democratic Process in Uganda

eTurboNews:

In response to human rights abuses and corruption in Uganda, the Department of State announces that it is taking steps to impose visa restrictions under Section 212(a)(3)(C) of the Immigration and Nationality Act on Ugandan individuals believed to be responsible for, or complicit in, undermining the democratic process in Uganda.

As directed by President Biden, the US government will continue to evaluate additional actions under this policy, as well as the use of other tools at our disposal, to promote accountability for Ugandan officials and other individuals responsible for, or complicit in, undermining the democratic process in Uganda, abusing human rights, including those of LGBTQI+ persons, or engaging in corrupt practices.

As previewed when the Anti-Homosexuality Act 2023 was enacted in Uganda at the end of May, the Department has also updated its travel guidance to US citizens to highlight the risk that LGBTQI+ persons, or those perceived to be LGBTQI+, could be prosecuted and subjected to life imprisonment or the death penalty based on provisions in the law.

The United States strongly supports the Ugandan people and remains committed to advancing respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms in Uganda and globally.

eTurboNews:

The Seychelles Islands, an extraordinary destination renowned for its beauty, botanical variety and geological and ecological importance, have long been a source of enchantment and wonder. These sentiments are at the heart of George Camille’s artistic creations, now on display at the 28 Piazza di Pietra Fine Art Gallery in Rome from 9th to 30th June 2023.

The art show, which opened on June 8th, is backed by Tourism Seychelles and takes viewers on a journey into the emotional universe of the artist. Camille’s exhibition is an ode to the Seychelles Islands – an idyllic paradise to be discovered, respected and protected.

At the event’s start, Danielle Di Gianvito, Tourism Seychelles’ Italian market representative, said, “We are thrilled to take our potential tourists on such a magnificent voyage of discovery of Seychelles to entice them to visit the beautiful location and enjoy its great cultural/artistic scene and attractions. After all, Seychelles is so much more than sea, beaches, and nature.”

Regarded as the most significant and versatile artist in Seychelles, George Camille places nature and the complex relationship with man at the centre of his artistic reflection through a personal iconographic universe in which the human being, the fish, the gecko, the leaf, water and the turtle appear repeatedly. Camille’s art goes beyond the narration of his country and traditions, offering a lucid and careful reflection on the world, nature, our relationship with it, and our (in) sustainable approach.

Camille’s pictorial universe is made of stories steeped in Water and Earth: deep blues, moments of everyday life with men and women caught unaware in their daily routines, roosters, geese, and birds, inhabiting canvases and pictorial surfaces.

Throughout his work, color emerges as a powerful and vibrant force, celebrating the deep blue hues of the ocean’s depths and the lush greenery of the dense forests—a hymn to the remarkable environmental diversity found in the islands.

As both an artist and skillful craftsman, Camille adeptly explores different formats and experiments with various artistic techniques. He displays a rare ability in the use of various mediums, from painting on canvas with acrylic, collage, graphics and engraving on paper and copper, watercolor, sculpture, and installation, up to his experiments with fabric, the use and interweaving of metal wires, and the reuse of abandoned objects.

Reflecting on the event’s sponsorship, Mrs. Bernadette Willemin, Director General for Destination Marketing, explains, “It was important for us to support this event because we recognize the Italian market’s appreciation for artistic beauty. It is our way of contributing to the destination via the work of this well-known Seychellois artist. We were told that the premiere event was a huge success, and we wish Mr. Camille the best of luck with the rest of his show.”

Curated by Gina Ingrassia, the exhibition is promoted by Tourism Seychelles in Italy and George Camille Art Studio, with the general coordination overseen by Pandion Edizioni and Inmagina and supported by Comediarting. Partners include Etihad Airways, Four Seasons Natura e Cultura tour operator, and the National Art and Culture Fund (NACF). The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue published by Pandion Edizioni.

While George Camille’s art has garnered recognition in Italy through his participation in the Venice Biennale in 2015, 2017, and 2019, this solo exhibition marks his debut in the country’s capital. It presents a carefully curated selection of his works, encompassing new and recent pieces alongside his earlier and well-known productions, providing insight into the artist’s roots and profound connection with his homeland.

Guam Medical Association Provides Clinics Listing for Stranded Visitors

eTurboNews:

In the aftermath of Typhoon Mawar, the Guam Visitors Bureau (GVB) has released its May 2023 preliminary arrivals report and an update to its Fiscal Year 2023 visitor forecast.

The report, issued by the GVB Research & Strategic Planning Division, shows that pre-COVID recovery was on track with original projections of about 670K visitors for the fiscal year. However, arrivals were impacted by Typhoon Mawar, driving the Bureau to revise its original projections.

“Historical records indicate pre-typhoon monthly arrival levels recovering in six months on average. We are encouraged by the progress being made to the value chain destination experience, which we are supporting with grants through the Tourism Assistance Program currently underway,” said Acting President & CEO Gerry Perez.

“If past recoveries are any indication of the industry’s resiliency, then GVB is confident in our island’s unified effort to bounce back in the coming months.”

“Given the current state of our island along with market conditions, we have adjusted our FY2023 forecasts from 670K to around 515K for the remainder of the year,” said Nico Fujikawa, Director of Tourism Research & Strategic Planning. “While this adjustment represents an overall revision of a 23% reduction in arrivals for the fiscal year, GVB anticipates a quick recovery in the months ahead.”

Market Breakdown

As GVB continues its marketing efforts in its source visitor markets, arrival numbers are showing improvement compared to 2022.

Japan saw arrivals increase by 429% compared to the previous year while Korea arrivals increased by 186% over the same period last year.

Arrivals from Taiwan are up by 2,332%. Although there are no direct flights from Taiwan, charter flights within the market are ongoing through the end of July.

The Philippines has also seen a slight increase of 22% compared to last year, while other arrivals demonstrated positive growth to include Australia by 73%, Europe by 7%, and Singapore by 73%.

GVB will continue to work with small local businesses and industry partners to ensure they are supported as summer campaigns for tourism ramp up in mid-July.

Travel and Tourism Deal Activity Plummets 41%

eTurboNews:

The travel and tourism industry has witnessed a massive 41% year-on-year (YoY) decline in deal activity from 475 deals announced during January-May 2022 to 282* during the first five of months of 2023.

The decline in deal activity in the industry indicates dampened sentiments and cautious approach of investors. The ongoing uncertainties and impact of the geopolitical tensions, inflation and recession fears have forced deal makers to adopt a more conservative approach.

All the deal types under coverage registered decline in volume. For instance, merger and acquisitions (M&A) deals volume decreased by 43% while the number of venture financing deals and private equity deals YoY declined by 34% and 44%, respectively, during January to May 2023.

The industry also witnessed a substantial YoY decline in deal activity across most of the regions worldwide during the period.

North America experienced a decline of 48% in deals volume during January to May 2023 compared to the same period during the previous year while Europe, Asia-Pacific and South and Central America regions registered decline of 49%, 27% and 36%, respectively.

Meanwhile, deals volume for the Middle East and Africa region remained unchanged.

The US, the UK, India, France, Australia and Japan witnessed significant YoY decline of 48%, 48%, 33%, 7%, 29% and 54%, respectively, in deals volume during January to May 2023.

On the other hand, easing of travel restrictions seems to be encouraging Chinese travelers. As a result, China stood out as a notable exception and registered a 19% YoY growth in the number of deals announced during the period.

*Mergers & acquisitions, private equity, and venture financing deals.

Note: Historic data may change in case some deals get added to previous months because of a delay in disclosure of information in the public domain.

Asia & Pacific Support International Code for Protection of Tourists

eTurboNews:

The International Code for the Protection of Tourists is the first ever legal instrument designed to create internationally recognized standards for the protection of tourists at the international level.

  • The Code was created by UNWTO with the active participation of more than 100 countries, international organizations, tourism experts and private sector stakeholders.
  • It was formally adopted at the 24th UNWTO General Assembly (December 2021). Member States were invited to apply it at the national level.
  • The Code provides greater legal clarity to States through a common and harmonized framework on how to assist tourists in emergency situations and help them develop laws, regulations and policies for the protection of tourists as consumers.

New Signatories

Member States of both UNWTO and the United Nations (UN) are encouraged to adhere to the Code:

Cambodia, the Maldives and Indonesia are the latest national-level signatories. They join Ecuador, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Guinea-Bissau, Honduras, Moldova, Myanmar, Paraguay, Portugal and Uruguay.

“People want to feel safe and protected when they travel and UNWTO has led the way in creating the first legal tool that will help restore trust in travel,” said UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili.

“The number of countries joining this initiative to incorporate it into national legislations keeps growing and we are proud to welcome Cambodia, the Maldives and Indonesia as the newest signatories.”

Sharing Best Practices

Within the framework of the 35th Joint Meeting of the Regional Commission for East Asia and the Pacific and the Commission for South Asia (Phnom Penh, Cambodia, 15-17 June), a conference on the International Code provided a platform for regional tourism leaders to share insights, best practices and lessons learnt on how this legal tool supports tourism recovery and trust after the severe crisis caused by the pandemic. The Conference:

  • Counted on unprecedented high-level participation of delegations from Asia and the Pacific countries, including the Deputy Prime Minister of Cambodia, Ministers of Tourism from Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Maldives and the Philippines and Vice Ministers of Tourism of China and Iran
  • Benefitted from the participation of Uruguay as “Champion of the Code” and a leader in the assistance to tourists in emergency situations. .
  • Offered expert insights on how the Code closes existing gaps in legal frameworks and contributes to greater international harmonization.
  • Underscored the need to promote closer public-private links to better coordinate responsibilities when assisting tourists and protecting consumer rights.

Phnom Penh Declaration

The “Phnom Penh Declaration on the International Code for the Protection of Tourists” was adopted by the Member States of the Asia and the Pacific region before the conference and officially launched under the high patronage of the Ministry of Tourism of Cambodia. The Declaration:

  • Reaffirms the commitment of the Asia and the Pacific region to strengthen cooperation to improve the assistance available to international tourists in emergency situations.
  • Underlines the need to promote closer linkages between governments, tourism service providers and other tourism stakeholders for a better protection of tourists as consumers.

The Declaration reflects Cambodia’s commitment to assist tourists in emergency situations, as shown in February 2020 when rescuing more than 1,000 passengers stranded at sea on the MS Westerdam cruise ship.

eTurboNews:

The World Travel Expo (WTE) in Miami, Florida, is taking place at the Miami Airport Convention Center from June 13 to 15, 2023.

What specific measures has Jamaica implemented to leverage tourism as a catalyst for economic and social development?

Tourism remains the number one driver of economic growth in Jamaica. Jamaica has implemented several measures to leverage tourism as a catalyst for economic and social development.

Marketing

The Jamaican government has actively promoted tourism through various marketing campaigns to attract international visitors. This includes advertising campaigns, participation in various international trade fairs, engaging with new markets, and collaborating with travel agencies and airlines to promote Jamaica as the destination of choice.

Human Capital Development

It must be noted that tourism is a series of moving parts that must come together seamlessly to create the experience that we sell to the world and there are many individuals who help to create this visitor experience – the hotel workers, farmers, craft vendors, tour operators, red cap porters, contract carriage operators and attractions workers, just to name a few. The government has recognized the importance of a skilled workforce in the tourism industry. Measures have been implemented to provide training and certification for thousands of tourism workers and high school students through free programs offered by the Jamaica Centre of Tourism Innovation (JCTI) and its local and international partners.

Additionally, we have implemented the following strategies to leverage tourism as a driver for economic and social development by:

•             Providing a secure retirement income for our tourism workers through the game-changing Tourism Workers Pension Scheme (TWPS).

•             Facilitating valuable marketing opportunities for Small and Medium Tourism Enterprises (SMTEs) through our annual Tourism Linkages Network (TLN) events, such as Christmas in July and Speed Networking, which provide a platform for hundreds of local producers and entrepreneurs to engage with the hospitality sector and corporate Jamaica.

•             Assisting tourism workers with adequate and affordable housing; including efforts through partnerships being forged with hotel investors, to build more than 2,500 homes for hotel workers.

•             Nurturing new and start-up enterprises within the tourism sector through the Tourism Innovation Incubator.

Building out capacity to ensure sustainability and resilience

Furthermore, Jamaica has made efforts to build out capacity to promote sustainable tourism practices and resilience. The government has implemented initiatives to protect the environment, preserve natural resources, and promote responsible tourism. This includes the establishment of marine parks and protected areas, as well as the promotion of eco-tourism and community-based tourism initiatives.

Additionally, the government has invested in improving the country’s infrastructure to support tourism. This includes expanding and upgrading airports, seaports, and roads to enhance connectivity and facilitate the movement of tourists.

Jamaica has fostered partnerships between the public and private sectors to drive tourism development. Collaboration with private investors and tourism stakeholders has been crucial in attracting investment, developing infrastructure, and implementing marketing strategies.

How does Jamaica balance the preservation of its cultural heritage with the demands of the tourism industry?

Jamaica is the go-to destination for vibrant cultural heritage. In fact, it is the preservation of our cultural heritage that drives the demand for our tourism.  We continue to make efforts to balance the preservation of our cultural traditions with the demands of the tourism industry by investing in our people, upgrading supporting infrastructure, developing new attractions, and promoting sustainable tourism practices that benefit our communities and protect our environment.

Cultural tourism initiatives: Jamaica has developed cultural tourism initiatives that showcase the country’s rich heritage and traditions. These initiatives aim to provide authentic cultural experiences for tourists while also preserving and promoting Jamaican culture. For example, visitors can participate in activities such as reggae music workshops, traditional dance performances, and culinary tours that highlight local cuisine.

Moreover,  Jamaica has taken steps to preserve its historical sites and landmarks, ensuring they remain accessible to both locals and tourists. Places like the Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park, Port Royal, and the Bob Marley Museum are protected and maintained to provide insights into Jamaica’s history and cultural significance. Preservation efforts help maintain a sense of national identity and enable tourists to learn about Jamaican heritage.

Importantly, we recognize the importance of sustainable tourism practices to minimize the negative impacts on cultural heritage. Efforts are made to promote responsible tourism, such as limiting visitor numbers in sensitive areas, implementing waste management systems, and encouraging respect for cultural practices and sites. This ensures that tourism development aligns with the goal of preserving Jamaica’s cultural heritage for future generations.

Additionally, we recognize the importance of involving local communities in tourism development and decision-making processes. By empowering local residents, we  give them a sense of responsibility in preserving our cultural heritage and benefiting from the economic opportunities provided by tourism. Community-based tourism initiatives have been established, where locals are involved in hosting visitors, showcasing their traditions, and offering unique cultural experiences.

Festivals like Reggae Sumfest, Maroon celebrations, and the Jamaica Carnival attract both domestic and international tourists. These events not only generate tourism revenue but also create opportunities to showcase Jamaican music, dance, art, and culinary traditions.

Can you share any success stories or best practices from Jamaica that demonstrate the positive impact of tourism on local communities?

Tourism serves as a catalyst for economic growth, job creation, infrastructure development, cultural preservation, poverty alleviation, environmental sustainability, and cultural exchange in our local communities.

Through our Tourism Linkages Network, we have been able to expand our reach to more Jamaicans in our local communities across a myriad of industries which supply and contribute positively to the growth of our sector. To this end, the Agri-Linkages Exchange (ALEX), which is a platform that connects small farmers directly with buyers in the tourism industry, has been a game-changer for the local agricultural community. During the first two months of the year, 490 farmers earned approximately $108 million in revenue via the ALEX platform. We have also sold produce worth over $330 million through the ALEX portal in 2022, benefiting 1,733 farmers like Fitzroy Mais, a strawberry farmer of in St Andrew,  and 671 buyers registered on the platform. This is a testament to the power of tourism and the importance of technological collaboration in driving growth and development.

There are several other best practices and success stories that demonstrate the positive impact of tourism on local communities that could be mentioned:

Our craft market vendors and local artisans: Craft markets are prevalent throughout Jamaica, offering a wide range of locally made crafts, artwork, and traditional products. These markets provide a platform for local artisans to showcase and sell their creations directly to tourists. By supporting local artisans, visitors contribute to the economic well-being of these communities and help preserve traditional craft skills and techniques. The Ocho Rios Craft Market and the Devon House Heritage Site are notable examples where local artisans thrive.

Community-based tourism in Treasure Beach: Treasure Beach, a coastal community in Jamaica, has embraced community-based tourism as a way to empower local residents and promote sustainable development. Through the Treasure Beach Women’s Group and the Treasure Beach Foundation, the community has established guesthouses, restaurants, and tour operations that are owned and operated by community members. This initiative has provided income opportunities for local women and families, improved infrastructure, and supported education and healthcare projects in the area.

Reggae music tourism: Jamaica’s vibrant music culture, especially reggae, has become a significant attraction for tourists. Various initiatives, such as music festivals, reggae tours, and visits to recording studios, enable tourists to experience the authentic music scene and learn about its cultural and historical significance. These activities create opportunities for local musicians, event organizers, and related businesses, contributing to economic growth, job creation, and the preservation of Jamaican music heritage.

These success stories highlight how tourism in Jamaica has positively impacted local communities by creating economic opportunities, preserving cultural heritage, empowering marginalized groups, and supporting sustainable development. By aligning tourism development with community engagement and empowerment, Jamaica has demonstrated that tourism can be a catalyst for inclusive growth and preservation of cultural identity.

Poland Scraps Bus Route 666 to Hel After Church Complains

eTurboNews:

Polish transit operator PKS Gdynia announced that due to complaints from the Roman Catholic Church it will be renumber its notorious ‘Satanic Bus’ route serving Pomeranian resort area.

According to the operator, bus route 666, serving Poland’s Baltic Sea resort of Hel, will be re-numbered at the end of June.

“We changed the number from 666 to 669, [to be] less controversial and less conspicuous,” PKS Gdynia executive said, citing complaints by the church as one of the reasons for the decision.

“For us, the most important thing is that the buses run and that the routes are served properly. The line number is secondary.”

After the transit operator had assigned the number to bus few years ago, English-speaking visitors noticed the pun in taking route 666 to “Hell” and the line became a tourist attraction.

The ‘Satanic Bus’ route became so popular with outside visitors that Hel, a resort community of about 10,000 residents, became overcrowded at times during the summer beach season. Some tourists made the trip to the peninsula only to ride the bus.

While bus route 666 proved to be good for business, it was perceived less charitably by some in the traditionally Catholic country. Christian numerology associates 666 with the devil, based on a line from the Biblical Book of Revelation about the “number of the beast.”

Back in 2018, the Catholic newspaper called the pun “Satanic stupidity” and argued that it made frivolous fun of the “horror of soul death and separation from God’s love.” The outlet said it would call on the Polish government to intervene unless PKS Gdynia changed the route number.

“The Bus line 666 running to Hel, to put it briefly and bluntly, strikes at the Christian order of the Polish state and its foundations, and hence – at the well-being of all of us,” the paper cried.

But apparently, PKS Gdynia has now been inundated with complaints from the other camp. “We are shocked how many supporters of the old numbering have contacted us,” bus operator’s executive said, adding that it might be possible for Route 666 to return – maybe not this year, but perhaps the next.

Airline Groups Call for Global Alignment of Slot Regulations

eTurboNews:

Airline associations around the world called for governments to ensure the global alignment of airport slot regulations to safeguard the consistent, fair, and transparent allocation of slots under the Worldwide Airport Slot Guidelines (WASG).

In a joint statement, the African Airlines Association (AFRAA), Airlines for America (A4A), Airlines International Representation in Europe (AIRE), Arab Air Carriers Organization (AACO), Association of Asia-Pacific Airlines (AAPA), European Express Association, European Regions Airline Association (ERAA), International Air Transport Association (IATA) and Latin American and Caribbean Air Transport Association (ALTA) set out the benefits of the WASG, which has ensured decades of stability and consistency in the application of slot management. Under the WASG, consumers have benefitted from a consistent growth in reliable schedules and expansion to new markets, while airlines and airports have seen an increase in the utilisation of scarce airport capacity.

Fragmentation of slot regulation risks disruption to airline schedules and imperils the advances in global connectivity, efficiency, competition and choice which have characterized the aviation industry in recent decades. With the number of slot-regulated airports worldwide growing steadily, it is vital that governments recognize the importance of the harmonization of slot regulations in line with the WASG.

The WASG has undergone a significant revision in recent years, with improvements to the new entrant definition to increase competition and access opportunities at congested airports. Slot performance monitoring has also been better defined to ensure optimal use of allocated slots. It is therefore important that national or regional slot regulations are aligned dynamically with the WASG so that the aviation sector and travelers can immediately benefit from these and other enhancements to the system.

The Associations also urged governments thinking of incorporating the WASG or amending existing slot regulations to work with the Worldwide Airport Slot Board, a body comprising slot experts from airlines, airports, and slot coordinators, who oversee expert revisions to the WASG. Consulting with this group of experts can ensure that governments, their economies and citizens, will continue to reap the benefits of an increasingly more interconnected, sustainable and efficient air transport network.

“The air transport industry thrives on consistent global standards. The Worldwide Airport Slot Guidelines are the unsung hero the air transport system. Because of the WASG, travelers, businesses and economies the world over have benefited from constant growth in air connectivity, strong competition, and route diversity while ensuring that utilization of scarce airport capacity also increased. Governments should align their slot rules with this global standard to benefit from better air connectivity, efficiency, and consumer choice,” said Willie Walsh, IATA’s Director General.

The statement was issued at the 152nd Slot Conference in Dublin, Ireland. The Slot Conference attracts over 1,000 delegates, with representatives of more than 200 slot coordinated airports and 215 individual airlines.

This twice-yearly conference has been taking place since 1948 and is a significant moment in the aviation planning diary, allowing the opportunity to meet for quickfire optimization of planned schedules, while looking at new opportunities for route and network growth. The goal of the conference is for airlines to obtain the slots that will give them the best possible schedule to offer their customers at coordinated airports. The next conference will take place in Dubai, UAE, on14-17 November 2023.

eTurboNews:

Budapest Airport has announced a boost in the gateway’s capacity to Egypt, with the confirmation of Wizz Air’s new link to Cairo. The ultra-low-cost carrier (ULCC) will launch a three times weekly service between the capital cities on 30 October, meaning Budapest will see its weekly capacity more than double to Cairo this winter.

While Budapest has existing connections to Cairo, the addition of the ULCC’s new service in the Egyptian market sees the first low-cost operation to Egypt’s largest city. Joining the airport’s established links to Cairo, Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh, the start of Wizz Air’s new link will see Budapest offer 13 flights, more than 2,400 one-way seats, to Egypt each week in W23/24.

“Wizz Air’s connection to Cairo is fantastic news for the large number of Egyptian tourists visiting us every year, and we’re thrilled to welcome the carrier’s latest addition to our route map,” enthuses Balázs Bogáts, CCO, Budapest Airport. “The announcement is just as great for the many Hungarians travelling to Egypt to experience the rich culture, heritage, and the incredible ancient architecture, as well as being the perfect setting for winter sun.”

Flown on the carrier’s fleet of 239-seat A321 Neos, the new service to Cairo will join Wizz Air’s established links to Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh.

Wizz Air, legally incorporated as Wizz Air Hungary Ltd. is a Hungarian multinational ultra low-cost carrier with its head office in Budapest, Hungary. The airline serves many cities across Europe, as well as some destinations in North Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia.

It may seem like cruise ships discourage babies on board when finding out what things (even certain aged babies) are banned.

eTurboNews:

No need to post a “Baby On Board” sticker outside your cruise ship cabin door if that baby is not of a certain age. And forget about the bottle warmers, sterilizers, and baby monitors. Also no homemade baby food, please, and even for the older children, don’t bring inflatable pool toys. You say your dog or cat is your baby? Sorry, not allowed either. And just in case you were wondering, don’t bring helium balloons to any celebration you are planning while cruising.

Young Babies

Family-friendly cruises allow babies on board, but some ships specify the age of the babies, with some saying they can only be older than six months, and some with a 12-month-old requirement. Some cruise ships do not allow children at all, so take this into consideration when planning your trip. Some ships will be better suited to families and young children so ask your cruise agent for advice on the best cruise line for you.

Bottle Warmers and Sterilizers

Some cruise lines prohibit bottle warmers and sterilizers but may permit travel sterilizers. It is important to check with your cruise agent or provider before packing so you are sure there is no chance of it being on the list of banned items. Some cruise lines provide a number of sterilizers on board which can be hired as required.

Baby Monitors

Baby monitors are not permitted on many cruise lines, and the metal walls of many ships don’t allow the monitors to work properly anyway. On the cruise, it is likely you will either be in the same room or an adjoining room to your baby so there is no need to worry about being away from them or needing to monitor them as you will always be close by.

Parents are reminded that many cruise lines operate babysitting services at different times of the day. The support services offered vary hugely by cruise line, however. Some cruise lines do not supervise under 3s or might only offer childcare in a ‘kids club’ style environment. It is always best to check with your specialist cruise agent before booking.

Homemade Food

Pre-packaged, unopened snacks are allowed on a cruise, but any homemade food is banned. These limitations are related to concerns for food safety and contamination, as cruise lines are not able to provide refrigeration or storage for personal food items. One of the best things about cruising is there are lots of culinary options available on board so there is no need to bring food from home.

Inflatable Pool Toys

If your ship has a pool onboard, it may be tempting to bring along inflatable pool toys or noodles for young children, but these must be left at home. Most cruise lines only allow you to bring inflatable armbands for your little ones which must be deflated at the time of boarding. Other cruise lines will allow you to bring buoyancy vests on-board for children but this is not usually the case. It is always sensible to check with your cruise line before packing and leaving home.

Pets

Household pets like dogs and cats are not allowed on the majority of cruise lines, but service dogs (e.g. guide dogs/seeing eye dogs) are an exception. You will need to get permission from the cruise line before bringing a service dog on board, however, and the dog must be officially registered.

Helium Balloons

Anyone planning a celebratory cruise for a birthday, anniversary or other occasion should refrain from bringing balloons. Most cruise lines have banned inflatables of all kinds, but some offer a service to buy balloons from the ship and have them delivered to your room for the big day.

And Furthermore… No, No, and No

Irons and Steamers

Items which generate heat are prohibited from cruises as they are viewed as potential fire hazards. Anyone wanting to iron their clothes once onboard should check to see if their ship provides a public laundry room which includes irons and board for passengers. Dry cleaning and pressing services are also available on many luxury ships.

For those traveling on luxury cruise lines, many cabin grades will include a free laundry and pressing service. People staying in suites will often enjoy the services of a dedicated butler who will react swiftly to impromptu requests for a shirt or dress to be pressed before dinner for example.

Extension Leads and Cords

Most newer ships are designed with accessibility in mind, with lots of power sockets around every cabin, stateroom or suite. However, older ships may not be as well equipped. However due to fire and safety regulations, passengers are prohibited from bringing their own multi outlet extension cord or lead to boost the number of plugs in their cabin.

If needed, 220-volt cruise-compliant extension cords with USB charging ports are usually sold in the ship’s on-board shop. Check first with your cruise line to see if they prohibit extension cords or not and always err on the side of caution.

Alcohol

Most cruise lines don’t allow passengers to bring beer or liquor onboard, but they allow one bottle of wine per passenger. This must be in your carry-on bag rather than checked luggage and bottles must be unopened and sealed. Some lines charge a corkage fee, so be sure to check with your cruise line before packing your favorite wine.

If you are flying to meet your cruise ship, this adds another layer of complexity. Whilst you can carry alcoholic beverages in your hold luggage on an aircraft (under 70% proof) or buy alcohol at the duty free store at the airport, these items may well be confiscated when boarding your ship. All baggage is x-rayed before going on a cruise ship and often alcohol will be removed to meet the regulatory standards at specific ports of call.

Thanks to Panache Cruises for sharing banned cruise ship items – inanimate and living.

eTurboNews:

With over fifty years in business, Delta Vacations, a Delta Airlines company, is one of the largest vacations providers in the United States. Delta Airlines is a major airline based in the United States and is considered a legacy carrier.

The announcement, which follows the island’s double-digit growth in terms of demand and outpacing one of its major competitors, Mexico, was shared during a high-level meeting with Jamaica’s Minister of Tourism, the Hon. Edmund Bartlett, and Senior Executives of Delta Airlines at their headquarters in Atlanta on Monday, June 12.

Jamaica’s tourism products and offerings continue to be top of mind for consumers of our major airline partners like Delta. Coming out of the pandemic, we have seen the demand for Jamaica grow as people search for the real and authentic experiences that we have to offer. It is truly gratifying to see that this growth is evident amongst our key tourism partners and will allow for further discussions for additional seats and routes,” said the Hon. Edmund Bartlett, Minister of Tourism, Jamaica.

The meeting with senior Delta Airlines’ Senior Executives forms part of an overarching marketing blitz led by Minister Bartlett and his team, with a series of tourism engagements in the United States, the country’s largest source market for visitors.

Atlanta forms one of the major cities from which Jamaica welcomes a large influx of American visitors. It also has a large Diaspora population that usually chooses to return to Jamaica to vacation and spend in the destination. Data from Delta Airlines has also indicted that seats to Jamaica are up ten percent for the upcoming summer period, which will add to the very favorable projections that it will be the best summer on record for the destination.

Minister Bartlett, with his team of Senior Tourism officials, have also engaged with other critical stakeholders in New York and Miami to ensure the sector leverages the island’s strong predictions for summer.

“Our discussions with the Delta team also explored the possibility of multi-destination experiences through Delta’s long-haul routes that coincide with our target for emerging markets like India and Africa. We are looking at visitors from countries opting to make Jamaica a destination spot through these routes,” continued Minister Bartlett.

Leisure Travel Demand Normalizing from Post-Pandemic Surge

eTurboNews:

Recently released US Travel biannual forecast for travel to and within the United States through 2026, shows a normalized rate of growth in the domestic leisure travel sector after months of elevated demand.

Robust domestic leisure travel demand has been the driving force in the overall industry’s post-pandemic comeback. Though the surge experienced in the last year is starting to moderate, the travel industry expects this segment to remain resilient in coming quarters.

Domestic Leisure Travel

Domestic leisure travel is expected to remain strong, but with normalized rates of growth (around 2%) in 2023 and 2024. Volume is expected to grow faster year-over-year (YOY) than inflation-adjusted spending in 2024 and beyond.

Domestic Business Travel

Both volume and spending in domestic business travel is expected to grow—albeit more slowly—largely due to economic conditions. While business travel will continue recovering, with both volume and spending at double-digit growth in 2023, it is expected that growth in inflation-adjusted spending will be slower than volume in 2024 and beyond.

Business travel volume is not expected to recover to 2019 levels until 2025, while inflation-adjusted spending is not expected to recover within the range of the forecast.

International Inbound Travel

The inbound travel forecast was upgraded due to strong demand from the Canadian market, as well as stronger expectations from key overseas markets such as Brazil. Year-over-year, inbound travel volume is projected to grow 31% in 2023 and 18% in 2024, while inflation-adjusted spending is projected to grow 34% in 2023 and 19% in 2024.

Volume in this sector is projected to recover by 2025, while inflation-adjusted spending will not recover until 2026.

Policies to Grow Travel

US Travel report cites four key federal policy areas to accelerate growth across travel sectors:

• Improve the overall air travel experience through the Federal Aviation Administration reauthorization bill

• Lower US visitor visa interview wait times, which currently exceed an average of 500 days in top visa-requiring inbound markets

• Reduce Customs wait times at US airports and other ports of entry experiencing excessive delays

• Increase federal prioritization and focus on travel industry growth, as other countries have done

Travel is essential to growing the US economy and workforce, so the federal government must enact policies to ensure the industry is able to meet demand in coming years.

Istanbul Airport Breaks Frankfurt's Flight Record Set in 2019

eTurboNews:

According to the European Organization for the Safety of Air Navigation (Eurocontrol), Istanbul Airport (IST) saw a 12% surge in daily traffic as football fans were returning home after attending the 2023 Champions League Final in Istanbul.

Turkey’s main air hub, which already enjoys the status of Europe’s busiest, serviced 1,684 flights last Sunday, breaking the record of 1,624 flights set by Frankfurt Airport (FRA) on September 11, 2019.

The previous three daily arrival-departure records at a European airport were all set in quick succession in 2019 before the pandemic, according to Eurocontrol.

“The former record was held by Frankfurt, overtaking, in less than a month, Paris’ Charles de Gaulle Airport (1,612 daily flights on 26 August 2019), which in turn replaced Madrid Barajas (1,600 daily flights on 2 June 2019),” the European Organization for the Safety of Air Navigation said.

There was also a significant increase in daily flows in the home cities of the Champions League finalists. Traffic at Milan Malpensa Airport, the largest international airport in northern Italy, surged 54% week-over-week. Meanwhile, Manchester Airport saw a comparatively modest increase by 5% in its daily traffic.

Last month, Turkish transportation and infrastructure minister Adil Karaismailoglu reported that Istanbul Airport broke a new record on the number of daily flights and passenger flow. On April 30, it handled 195,640 passengers aboard 1,301 flights.

Opened four and a half years ago, Istanbul’s new airport is the larger of two international hubs serving the city. It replaced the older Ataturk Airport and has developed into a busy modern air facility connecting Europe and Asia. The hub serves as the base of operations for Star Alliance carrier Turkish Airlines. On May 6, the airport announced that it had served over 200 million passengers.

Istanbul’s new airport was able to capture some of the extra demand, due to current geopolitical tensions caused by Russia’s ongoing aggression in Ukraine.

Among the most popular international routes for the city are flights to London, Dubai, and Tel Aviv. Tehran flights, the most popular route, have been traveled by around six million passengers since the airport opened in 2018.

Further to the completion of several successful shows, including Global Sources Hong Kong, which packed out all ten halls with over 100,000 buyers at the AsiaWorld-Expo (AWE), and HOFEX, Asia’s Leading Food and Hospitality Tradeshow which brought over 30,000 buyers from around the world to the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC), Hong Kong is continuing to boost the exhibition forward momentum by booking yet more events.

The Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) announced the city is welcoming back two more premier global trade fairs, Vinexpo Asia 2024 and APLF Leather, Materials + & Fashion Access 2024, while securing four new trade shows for this year.

APLF and Vinexpo Asia set to return to Hong Kong in 2024

Next year, APLF Leather, Materials + & Fashion Access 2024, one of the world’s most important leather and fashion tradeshows and Vinexpo Asia, the most highly regarded international show in the wine and spirits industry in Asia-Pacific, are set to return to Hong Kong in March and May respectively.

Kenneth Wong, General Manager, MICE & Cruise of HKTB, said:

“The return of the world’s leading trade shows highlights Hong Kong’s attractiveness, its friendly trading policies, and solid fundamentals.”

“Hong Kong also enjoys promising growth potential with the Greater Bay Area (GBA) and comprehensive government support for the industry. We are highly delighted to see organizers of both old and new shows choosing Hong Kong.”

David Bondi, Senior Vice President, Informa Markets Asia said, “We’re delighted to bring APLF events back to Asia’s World City next year. The enthusiasm is palpable as the city has long been our home base, connecting the global markets with Chinese suppliers and buyers.”

Launched in Asia a quarter-century ago, Vinexpo Asia is one of the world’s largest events for wine and spirits professionals. Rodolphe Lameyse, Chief Executive Officer of Vinexposium Group said, “Hong Kong is the strategic gateway to the market in mainland China, and 2024 will mark Vinexpo Asia’s triumphant return to the city with hundreds of producers presenting the very best wines from all around the world.”

HOFEX 2023 attracted over 30,000 buyers at HKCEC

Four new shows cement Hong Kong as GBA’s MICE hub and Asia’s aviation and logistics center

This June and July, four new exhibitions are being staged in Hong Kong for the first time: DMP Greater Bay Area Industrial Expo; the three-in-one expo BioCHINA 2023; Greater Bay Area ESG & Sustainability Exhibition; and the 13th JCtrans Global Freight Forwarders Expo 2023.

The exciting line-up is a strong testament to Hong Kong’s thriving exhibition scene in the light of the city’s unique position as the MICE hub of the GBA and a global aviation and logistics centre.

African Hospitality Leaders Discuss Supply Chain Challenges

eTurboNews:

For too many years, African hospitality leaders have worked incredibly hard to maintain operational standards when critical products are unavailable to be sourced on time due to a myriad of reasons, from changing trade restrictions, poor transport infrastructure, currency fluctuations, and supply chain breakages.

This week leaders across the hospitality sector have descended into Nairobi city, the vibrant capital of Kenya and hub of East Africa, to join the annual African Hospitality Investment Forum (AHIF) to discuss growth opportunities in the region, and to share their learnings from the last year including developments across the trade and operational landscape. Attending is Toggle Market’s CEO, Fuad Sajdi, and VP of Africa, Abraham Muthogo Kamau, where they have been leading discussions on leveraging local and regional sourcing, and the innovative ways the sector is reducing operational costs.

Supply chain challenges in Africa have been one of the primary obstacles for economic growth and diversification, with businesses continuing to pay inflated prices for nearly every consumable and operational product that is not locally grown or manufactured – where even then it is more profitable to export outside the continent than to cater to the regional market due to weak intra-trade regulations.

Today there are promising signs that this status quo is changing fast

The African hospitality industry is in the throes of a massive transformation. The catalysts? Ground-breaking trade measures, rapidly evolving technology, and a fresh generation of visionary leaders. These forces are challenging the traditional “business as usual” mindset and reshaping the African hospitality landscape.

The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), the largest free trade area globally since the formation of the World Trade Organization, is set to significantly bolster intra-African trade. By reducing trade barriers, it allows a more fluid movement of goods, services, and people across borders. The ripple effect will be profound, with the hospitality sector one of the many industries reaping the benefits of this regional integration.

Breaking with the Past

The lessons of the Covid-19 pandemic have been harshest on the world’s largest continent which has for so long relied on suppliers in far flung countries, most heavily on goods from China, European Union (EU) countries, United States and India.

Take for instance South Africa which remains the largest importing country in Africa at 17% of all imports in the region. Its largest import partners in 2023 were China at 21.9%, followed by United States at 8.8%, Germany at 7.3%, India 5.8% and the UAE 3.6%.[1] The next largest importing countries are Nigeria, Egypt, Morocco, Kenya and Ghana.

The elephant in the room is that Intra-African trade still stands at only 15.2%, a poor showing when compared with intra-continental trade figures for America, Asia, and Europe, which stand at 47%, 61%, and 67%, respectively, and which should be at the head of the pan regional efforts to support trade and business. Much of this is due to multiple trade restrictions that exist in the region and between neighbouring countries for instance.

The recent World Bank 2022 AfCFTA report[2] shows that the borders between African countries rank among the most restrictive in the world and is the main reason there is relatively little intra-African trade and investment.

The impact of this in real terms is putting the break on the growth of regional businesses while limiting the flow of the international supply chain which in turn heavily relies on intra-African trade routes (where goods are transported across several borders by land routes) due to poor infrastructure and lack of trade and custom harmonisation.

For locally grown African hospitality investors and operators, the supply chain challenges remain acute, and ramifications have meant consistent delays in the growing pipeline of projects, along with sometimes turbulent price fluctuations on shipping and logistics services, as well as effects of weakened domestic currencies.

Our research across Toggle Hospitality clients in Africa has shown examples of multiple duties paid in this way to receive goods crossing several borders resulting in highly inflated pricing for essential products and equipment.

Trade Cooperation and Collaboration

The good news is that there are signs across all industry sectors of more joined up thinking and increased regional cooperation. For instance, amongst East African nations there has been a noticeable increase in activities across both government backed and private sector efforts through the multiple alliances that exist such as the East Africa Business Council, the East African Chamber of Commerce and Trade, and the East African Association.

In addition, the highly lauded and anticipated rollout of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement is geared to be the largest free trade region in the world based on the number of countries – at once connecting 1.3 billion people across 55 countries with a combined gross domestic product (GDP) valued at US$3.4 trillion and with a major potential as well to lift over 30 million people out of the poverty line.

For this to succeed there will need to be mutual and significant policy reforms and trade facilitation measures to reduce red tape, simplify customs procedures, and make it easier for African businesses to integrate into global supply chains. The upside is a boost of income gains around $300 billion.

The role of technology and the importance of a knowledge-based economy will increasingly be a driving force for transforming economic prosperity. The latest report from UNCTAD has warned that neglecting the high knowledge-intensive services, such as information and communications technology services and financial services, will be a key reason holding back export diversification in Africa.[3]

Hilton Remains World’s Most Valuable Hotel Brand

eTurboNews:

After two years of global travel restrictions and economic uncertainty, the past year has witnessed an increasing return to pre-pandemic travel patterns. However, hospitality sector analysts find that the hotel industry is slow to recover from the pandemic’s long-lasting effects, as 27 out of 50 hotel brands (54%) remain below their pre-pandemic values.

Hilton delivers exceptional service as the reigning champion of hotel brands, valued at US$11.7 billion

Hilton (brand value down 2% to US$11.7 billion) retains its title as the world’s most valuable hotel brand, according to the latest report from brand valuation experts.

2022 was an exceptional year of brand value growth for Hilton, with revenue soaring as both business and leisure travel surged post-pandemic. This year’s result indicates a slight slowdown in this growth momentum, as the industry returns to a more normal trajectory. That said, Hilton’s brand value remains above its pre-pandemic level, and it is almost double that of runner-up, Hyatt (brand value up 3% to US$6.1 billion).

During and post-pandemic, Hilton has demonstrated an ongoing commitment to innovation. Most recently, Hilton announced a partnership to launch a new cloud-based property management technology platform at its hotels to address the growing demand for modern amenities and seamless technology experiences for guests in addition to other recently launched industry-firsts like confirmed connecting rooms and digital key share.

Hilton also boasts the most valuable hotel portfolio in the world, solidifying its top ranking through further expanding its global presence. In 2022, Hilton its 7,000th hotel worldwide, surpassed 150 million Hilton Honors members and welcomed nearly 200 million guests. The American giant has strategically strengthened its portfolio worldwide, including renowned destinations like the South of France and the Asia-Pacific region. These efforts aim to reinforce Hilton’s brand value, familiarity, and global reputation.

In the post-pandemic world, Hilton has demonstrated remarkable resilience and a steadfast commitment to delivering exceptional experiences. With an unwavering focus on guest satisfaction, Hilton has not only recovered but has emerged stronger in several aspects, solidifying its position as a leading global brand. Through innovative strategies and a dedication to shifting consumer needs, it has retained its title as the world’s most valuable hotel brand.

Le Méridien is named the fastest-growing hotel brand as a new entrant to Top 50 ranking

Le Méridien (brand value up 375% to US$669.4 million) checks into the 2023 top 50 ranking in 23rd as the fastest-growing hotel brand. Part of the Marriott (brand value up 33% to US$3.1 billion) International portfolio, Le Méridien has been expanding its presence across the globe in the past year.

Most recently, Le Méridien established Le Méridien Melbourne. Its premium location and luxury features have attracted both tourists and locals, further boosting the hotel’s revenue from bookings in one of Australia’s most popular coastal cities.

Other significant growth milestones for Le Méridien include its second hotel opening in New York City, which is hoped to boost its familiarity score in the US and globally.

Conrad takes an extraordinary leap to become the world’s strongest hotel brand, with an AAA+ rating

In addition to calculating brand value, experts also determine the relative strength of brands through a balanced scorecard of metrics evaluating marketing investment, stakeholder equity, and business performance. Compliant with ISO 20671, experts’ assessment of stakeholder equity incorporates original market research data from over 100,000 respondents in 38 countries and across 31 sectors.

Conrad (brand value up 65% to US$537.82 million) has jumped up 16 spots to 31st position overall, while jumping an astonishing 38 spots into the winning position for brand strength, scoring 91/100. Known for its luxurious options and personalized service, Conrad has boosted its brand strength this year through significant global expansion. Hilton opened six new Conrad Hotels and Resorts in various desirable locations, including LA and Shanghai, with the aim of enhancing its long-standing reputation for seamless luxury and exceptional hotel design.

Hilton has highest Sustainability Perceptions Value (SPV) at US$565 million, while Taj has the highest Sustainability Perceptions Score, at 5.04 out of 10

As part of their analysis, analysts assess the role that specific brand attributes play in driving overall brand value. One such attribute, is sustainability. Analysts assess how sustainable specific brands are perceived to be, represented by a ‘Sustainability Perceptions Score’. This is an indexed score that provides a view of the role of sustainability in driving positive brand reputation. The value that is linked to sustainability perceptions, the ‘Sustainability Perceptions Value’, is then calculated for each brand.

Hilton has the highest Sustainability Perceptions Value (SPV) at US$565 million. Although Hilton has committed to becoming more sustainable, its position at the top of the SPV table is not an assessment of its overall sustainability performance. Rather, it indicates how much brand value it has tied up in sustainability perceptions. Hilton’s commitment to sustainability is evident through its ESG program, Travel with Purpose. The brand has set ambitious targets, aiming to reduce emissions intensity by 75% in Hilton-managed hotels and 56% in Hilton-franchised hotels by 2030.

India based hotels group, Taj (brand value up 19% to US$374.35 million) earns the highest Sustainability Perceptions Score in the Hotels 50 2023 ranking at 5.04 out of 10. In 2022, Taj’s parent company, IHCL, launched the Paathya sustainability program, encompassing several key initiatives, including eliminate the use of single-use plastics across its hotels, and installing electric vehicle (EV) charging stations.

Japan Tourism Reports Record High US Visitor Arrivals

eTurboNews:

The Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) announced that American visitor arrivals to Japan increased by 3.6 percent year-to-date in 2023 over the same period (January-April) in 2019, a year that broke the record for international travel to Japan.

In the month of April 2023 alone, nearly 184,000 Americans visited Japan, an 8 percent increase over April 2019 – making the US the only Western nation (aside from its North American neighbor, Mexico, which saw a 13.1 percent increase in its visitor numbers to Japan over the same period) to experience a rise in tourism to Japan.

“We have seen an exponential increase in the interest in travel to Japan from the American market,” says Michiaki Yamada, Executive Director of the Japan National Tourism Organization in New York.

“Following the reopening of our country’s borders to international tourism in late 2022 and the lifting of all Covid-related entry restrictions this spring, the incredible pent-up demand to experience the wonders of Japan post-pandemic means that we will likely be welcoming more Americans than ever before in the months to come.”

Japan is one of the most talked about travel destinations of 2023 with the country as a whole, along with its top cities and regions, appearing on some of the most coveted “Where to Go” Lists of the year, including: the Japanese cities of Morioka and Fukuoka in the New York Times’ annual list of “52 Places to Go in 2023”; Kyoto and Nagoya featured on Time Magazine’s list of “The World’s Greatest Places of 2023”; The Washington Post named Japan on its list of “The Top Travel Destinations for 2023”; the “art islands” of Naoshima included in CNN Travel’s list of “Where to Travel in 2023: The Best Destinations to Visit”; Kyushu featured in Bloomberg Pursuits’ “Where to Go in 2023” list; Osaka named to The Daily Beast’s list of “Where to Travel in 2023”; Japan on the Reader’s Digest list of the “20 Best Places to Travel in 2023”; Japan included in the TripSavvy list of “Where to Go in 2023: The Most Exciting Destinations of the Year”; Tokyo featured on CNBC’s list of “The 7 Cities You Must Visit Before You Die”; and the list goes on.

These workshops were held in Beijing, Shenzhen, Chengdu, and Shanghai to regain Chinese arrivals lost over the past three years.

The Tourism Seychelles China office successfully completed the first trade workshops with leading agents from Beijing, Tianjin, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Suzhou, and Hangzhou. The workshops began on May 26 in Beijing and continued in Shenzhen and Chengdu on May 29 and 31, respectively, with the final event held in Shanghai on June 2.

The Director for China, Mr. Jean-Luc Lai-Lam, and Senior Marketing Executive, Mr. Sen Yu, promoted the destination’s unique selling points and newly opened properties in Seychelles since 2019.

The Seychelles tourism trade business was well represented by several partners.

These included Emirates and Ethiopian Airlines as airline partners, and hotel properties represented by Constance Lemuria, Constance Ephelia, Savoy, and Coral Strand. The Destination Management Companies (DMCs) included 7° South, Cheung Kong Travel, Welcome Travel, SeyHi, and Luxury Travel.

Each workshop featured a comprehensive presentation on the destination by Tourism Seychelles and an overview of the Seychelles flight network by the airline partners. The workshops also included open floor discussions and meetings, allowing the Chinese travel agents present to interact with any trade partners on site.

Commenting on the significance of the workshops, the Director for China stated: “The role of the Seychelles trade partners in the Chinese market, like many others, is critical. Therefore, it is essential to ensure that Chinese travel agents are well-versed in our destination, products and services. In 2023, Tourism Seychelles plans to continue meeting with Chinese agents throughout the country to rekindle the Chinese market and increase Chinese arrivals this year.”

Air Canada Partners with Sabre

eTurboNews:

Sabre Corporation announced today the completion of a new multi-year distribution agreement that provides Sabre-connected agencies with long-term access to Air Canada’s full content via NDC channels. Under the agreement, Sabre will be able to provide agencies with significantly improved content and offers from Air Canada, including the airline’s dynamically priced fares and new ancillary services.

Canada’s flagship carrier Air Canada is actively working with Sabre on the launch of the airline’s NDC offers in the Sabre travel marketplace. The two companies expect to activate Air Canada’s NDC content in Sabre within the coming months. Once Air Canada’s NDC connection to Sabre is live, the Distribution Cost Recovery previously announced by Air Canada will be waived for Sabre-connected travel agencies using this path.

“We’re proud to be taking this next step with Sabre, providing the broadest range of rich Air Canada content, travel options and services to our customers and agency partners,” said Mark Nasr, Executive Vice President, Marketing and Digital for Air Canada. “Air Canada recognizes and appreciates Sabre’s progressive approach and the significant technology investments they’re making, which taken together, will deliver meaningful value to all travel industry stakeholders. This new partnership is the result of long-standing discussions, and it marks a significant next step towards delivering on Air Canada’s distribution promise: a smooth transition for agencies and travel buyers—both larger and smaller.”

A cornerstone of Air Canada’s distribution modernization strategy, NDC focuses on providing more personalized content as well as access to the best possible prices across channels. Improved distribution capabilities will likewise support the airline’s commercial strategy with fleet modernization and expansion plans, including investment in dozens of new, fuel-efficient Airbus A220 and A321XLR aircraft.

“NDC is a corporate priority for Sabre as an enabler of modern retailing. We share this vision with Air Canada and support its ambitious retailing and distribution goals, while ensuring agencies will benefit from the ample choice, efficiency and transparency of the Sabre Travel Marketplace,” said Roshan Mendis, Chief Commercial Officer for Sabre Travel Solutions. “This agreement demonstrates Sabre’s deep commitment to driving value and serving the diverse interests of the global travel marketplace – airlines, travel agencies and the travelers they serve.”

eTurboNews:

Barbados continues to demonstrate that it is a destination of choice for many US travelers as US-based airline JetBlue increases airlift to the island once again. Starting November 1, 2023, JetBlue will introduce a 2nd weekly flight from Boston Logan International Airport. This new flight option will run on Wednesdays, joining the existing Saturday service from Boston.

Similarly, JetBlue will continue to offer its second daily flight from JFK to BGI, through to February 2024, giving New York visitors even more options to visit the island.

“We are excited about the prospect of the continued double daily departures from JFK,” stated Eusi Skeete, US Director, Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc. (BTMI)]. “This increased capacity has the potential to add significant capacity out of the Tri-State area in what promises the busy winter season.”

“We are happy to see that our overall growth strategy for the New England area has been paying off, as indicated by the addition of this brand-new midweek fight out of Boston.”

Skeete added, “This increase in capacity is by no means a small feat, which is indicative both of the effectiveness of our efforts as well as JetBlue’s commitment to Barbados.”

“Our strong collaborative approach with JetBlue has been integral to the results we are now seeing, and we couldn’t be happier to continue to build on this longstanding partnership,” stated Skeete.

The additional daily flight from JFK comes just in time for travelers to book their flights for Barbados’ annual summer festival Crop Over, while the flight out of Boston is expected to be very beneficial for travelers hoping to escape the cold this winter.

Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, Investments & Aviation (BMOTIA) Executives are heading to the Golden State for the “Bringing The Bahamas to You” Global Missions initiative June 14-15, to showcase the 16-island destination’s latest tourism offerings and developments, spotlight The Bahamas’ longstanding film legacy and celebrate the milestone 50th Anniversary of Independence.

The Global Missions in California will be led by the Honorable I. Chester Cooper, Bahamas Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, Investments & Aviation. He will be accompanied by Latia Duncombe, BMOTIA’s Director General, and other senior BMOTIA executives. The delegation will meet with key industry leaders, partners, media and travel agents.

The Global Missions aim to heighten awareness of The Islands of The Bahamas brand in key markets and drive tourism business to the destination. The California Mission is aligned with the BMOTIA’s June 6 announcement of the inaugural JetBlue non-stop service from Los Angeles to Nassau to begin on November 4.

“We are thrilled that come November, travelers from California, the most populous state in the U.S. and one of the most diverse, will be able for the very first time, board a JetBlue flight at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) for non-stop service to Lynden Pindling International Airport (LPIA) in Nassau,” said Deputy Prime Minister Cooper.

“Californians are no strangers to sun, sand and sea yet are increasingly drawn to our shores for the unparalleled sites, experiences and vibrant culture,” he said. “In fact, stopover arrivals from California increased by 52% from January to April 2023 compared to the same period in 2022.”

“Over the past 9 months the Ministry has been in constant dialogue with key international aviation stakeholders to increase airlift capacity and meet the demand for travel to our destination.”

“This JetBlue new non-stop service signals a new day and will significantly increase access to The Islands of The Bahamas,” DPM Cooper added.

The “Bringing The Bahamas to You” Global Tour will transport a taste of The Bahamas to Costa Mesa and Los Angeles – The Bahamas’ leading tourism market for the West Coast.

Hollywood and The Bahamas have a longstanding relationship that began more than 100 years ago with the world’s first underwater film, Terrors of the Deep, being shot in Nassau, and continued with modern films like Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.

Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) serves as a key international hub. For travellers in the region, The Bahamas is only a connection away from major airports in cities including Chicago, Houston and Miami.

Following California, the “Bringing The Bahamas to You” Global Tour will return in late summer and fall 2023 with stops in Atlanta, Georgia and the United Kingdom.

Travelers who book their 2023 Bahamas vacation can expect year-long celebrations, events and festivities as the destination commemorates a golden jubilee milestone of 50 years of independence. Highlights from the upcoming 50th independence celebrations include Jubilee on the Sea at Montagu Beach; 50th on Bay concert series; 50th Independence People’s Rush, and much more.

Singapore’s Changi Tops World's Best Layover Airports List

eTurboNews:

As the travel bug bites, and we gear up for our next escapade, the dreaded layover may seem like a roadblock. However, some airports have everything you need to make the most out of your connecting flight, from world-class amenities to jaw-dropping attractions.

With summer approaching, many of us are looking forward to packing our bags and embarking on our next adventure, but when your trip requires a stopover on the journey, which airports top the ranks as the best for a layover?

From a seed list of 40 of the world’s busiest airports, travel industry experts have revealed the best airports for a layover by considering factors such as the availability of shops, food and beverage options, hotels within a two-mile proximity to the airport as well as passenger ratings of airport facilities such as lounges, Wi-Fi and food and retail services.

Singapore’s Changi Airport was named as the best airport for a layover for travelers this summer.

Featuring a ‘magical garden’ and the world’s largest indoor waterfall, it’s no surprise that Singapore’s Changi Airport has been crowned the best airport for stopovers. However, the ranking was due to more than just the airport’s picturesque nature, as it also provides an abundance of shops (240) for retail lovers and around 200 food and beverage options for those looking for refreshments.

Incheon International Airport in South Korea and Hong Kong International Airport follow shortly behind in second and third place, both boasting significantly high lounge and Wi-Fi satisfaction scores for those looking to stay comfy and connected.

  1. Singapore Changi Airport, Singapore

2. Incheon International Airport, South Korea

3. Hong Kong International Airport, Hong Kong

4. Dubai International Airport, United Arab Emirates

5. Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport, United States

6. Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, United States

7. Munich Airport, Germany

8. Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, India

9. Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, Netherlands

10. Denver International Airport, United States

The United States seems like a stopover haven as three airports in the US feature in the top 10 rankings. Surprisingly the UK’s largest airports Gatwick and Heathrow, not only do not place in the top 10 but rank 15th and 39th in the index.

The best airports for foodies and retail lovers

Finally, an airport stopover wouldn’t be complete without refreshments and some retail therapy. To reveal the best airports for foodies and retail lovers, we ranked the airports based on their number of shops, food and beverage facilities, as well as their food and retail satisfaction score.

With a food and retail service satisfaction score of 90% Singapore’s Changi Airport and Incheon International Airport claimed first and second place as the best airport stopovers for foodies and retail lovers, shortly followed by Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport and Munich Airport.

1. Singapore Changi Airport, Singapore
2. Incheon International Airport, South Korea
3. Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, United States
4. Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport, United States
5. Munich Airport, Germany

Prague Airport Changing Currency Exchange Services

eTurboNews:

Prague Airport is calling a concession procedure to select a new operator of currency exchange services and ATMs. The business model will be fundamentally changed and improved by the condition of capping the exchange rates of three core currencies at a maximum of 15 percent spread compared to the midpoint of the Czech National Bank (CNB). This set exchange rate policy is at the lower end of the scale among European airports.

The five-year agreement with the current operator terminates at the end of November this year, after which a new operator will launch their operations.

Jakub Puchalský, Member of the Prague Airport Board of Directors, said, regarding the tender announcement, that the airport has based its conditions on thorough research across other international airports in order to review the offered exchange rates. “We are significantly improving the service with a set exchange rate spread. As part of the concession process, we require the new operator to have experience in providing foreign currency exchange services and VAT refunds at the minimum of three international airports, and that the spread for the euro, dollar, and British pound is contractually set – in our case as the difference between the offered exchange rate and the midpoint of the CNB published exchange rate. In the case of online currency reservations and currency collections at the airport, the cap for the mentioned three currencies is only 5 percent, which could be especially interesting for domestic travellers,” Puchalský added.

The required services of the new operator will include exchange services, operation of ATMs, processing and payments of VAT refunds, online advanced reservations of currencies with collections at the airport, and money services including cash transfers. The operator will enjoy exclusivity in the area of currency exchange services and ATMs in the non-public area of both airport terminal buildings.

The contractual fine in the amount of 10,000 crowns for each violation of the exchange rate cap is also new. In the case of persistent violations, Prague Airport will have the right to cancel the exclusive status of the operator or terminate the agreement. The new operator will also have an obligation beyond the scope of the law to process cancellations of transactions in the public airport area which were concluded in the restricted area of the airport, to which the client no longer has access.

More US Flights From Heathrow Than Any EU Airport

eTurboNews:

Heathrow Airport has increased its lead over the European Union (EU) rivals for flight connections to the United States.

London’s air hub currently has more daily flights than ever before between the UK and USA as airlines switch capacity to North Atlantic routes and away from European and East Asian markets, which have been slower to recover.

The triple bank holiday in May, helped drive monthly passengers at Heathrow up to 6.7 million. with 1.6 million Heathrow passengers flying across the North Atlantic in May alone.

Heathrow has also successfully managed eight days of strikes during the busiest days in May, with no delays at security and no flight cancellations thanks to a strong contingency resource. The airport has been building that contingency team ahead of the summer season and does not anticipate cancellations as a result of any future strike action.

One in four passengers flying between the USA and Europe in May passed through Heathrow thanks to the choice of destinations and frequency. 248 daily flights to and from Heathrow now connect Britain to 31 US destinations, building trade links with the UK’s most important export market. As well as having more flights to New York than any European hub (over 30 daily departures), Heathrow is the only hub with a direct flight to Cincinnati.

The benefits this brings through trade and tourism demonstrate that Heathrow remains critically important as the UK’s gateway to the world.

Heathrow would also like to see the UK Government reinstating Tax Free Shopping to let British businesses and the UK economy maximize the benefits from recovering markets, instead of losing out to neighbors in France, Italy and Spain, where visitors currently spend more than double, they do in the United Kingdom.

Heathrow CEO John Holland-Kaye said: “The unrivalled choice of destinations and high frequency to cities like New York make flights from Heathrow vital trade routes with the USA, Britain’s most important export market. We have delivered excellent service to passengers, with no cancellations, over eight days of strikes on the busiest days in May, and do not anticipate cancellations as a result of strikes during the summer holiday getaway.”

The tourist boat, names Hurricane had 15 tourists and 12 crew members on board. Three UK visitors are missing.

The yacht caught fire while cruising the beautiful Egyptian Red Sea coast.

Most likely, a short circuit in the boat’s engine room made the ship go into flames off the southern Red Sea resort town of Marsa Alam.

“An electrical short circuit in the boat’s engine room sparked the blaze.”

Marsa Alam is a town in south-eastern Egypt, located on the western shore of the Red Sea.

The town is seen as an emerging tourist destination and has shown significant developments following the opening of Marsa Alam International Airport in 2003

A search was launched to find the remaining three British tourists, whose identities were not revealed.

The boat was on a six-day cruise and due back on Sunday when the fire broke out approximately 25km (16 miles) north of Marsa Alam.

Images posted on social media showed a white motor yacht with the same name on fire at sea, with thick smoke billowing into the sky.

Ahmed Maher was watching the disaster unfold from the shore. He told Al Jazeera News the boat was about 9km from the beach.

On Thursday, a Russian tourist was eaten by a shark in the waters of the Egyptian Red Sea city of Hurghada.

$54M Project to Create Youth Jobs in Zanzibar’s Blue Economy

eTurboNews:

The African Development Bank Group and the Republic of Tanzania have launched the Skills Development for Youth Employability in Blue Economy project. This is a project that will enable Zanzibari youth to find well-paying maritime and other blue economy jobs.

The Bank is providing grant financing of $48.65 million for the project, with the Tanzanian government contributing an additional $5.42 million. Both parties signed the grant agreement on the 21st of November 2022, with its official launch taking place on 17 May 2023.

The project will benefit about 43,000 youth (40% of them female) and prepare over 1,500 of them to start their own enterprises. They will be able to improve their livelihoods and spur the creation of new jobs. Ocean-based activities, including tourism, contribute more than 29% of Zanzibar’s gross domestic product and employ about 33% of its work force. At the same time, 60% of tourism workers in the islands are foreign.

Dr. Hussein Mwinyi, President of Zanzibar, launched the project during a ceremony held at the Golden Tulip Hotel near Zanzibar Airport. Ministers, permanent secretaries, and other senior government officials attended the ceremony, as did representatives of civil society and youth-led organizations.

President Mwinyi thanked the African Development Bank Group for what he said was its timely support, which would enhance youth employability and job creation in tourism and in the maritime, and oil and gas industries.

The Skills Development for Youth Employability in Blue Economy project will support the expansion of the State University of Zanzibar through construction of a technology and business incubator at Unguja, the archipelago’s main island. The incubator will offer training and mentorship to young entrepreneurs, bolstering job creation in tourism, the maritime sectors, and the oil and gas industry. Approximately 400 SUZA academics and lecturers will receive new skills and training.

The project will also help upgrade Karume Institute of Science and Technology (KIST), which will offer courses relating to the oil and gas industries.

In addition, the project will support construction of five vocational training centres in Unguja and Pemba island.

African Development Bank Group Tanzania Country Manager Patricia Laverley acknowledged the Government of Zanzibar’s request for support in addressing the peninsula’s high unemployment, especially among the youth. She said the Bank’s presence at the launch ceremony was evidence of its commitment to advance human capital development and help transform Zanzibar’s economy.

The project is aligned with Zanzibar’s 2021 Education Policy and the Blue Economy Strategy.

The Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA), the state agency responsible for holistically managing tourism in the Hawaiian Islands, announces that the protest period for three major procurements pertaining to destination stewardship and brand management in the United States and Canada markets closed on June 8. With no protests received for any of the awards announced on May 22, the awards are now final.

HTA is finalizing contracts with the selected vendors to advance Hawaii’s progress toward regenerative tourism through destination management and visitor education.

“With the procurement protest period behind us, we look forward to continuing our work in destination management and visitor education, advancing us toward a model of regenerative tourism for the good of Hawaii,” said John De Fries, HTA’s president and chief executive officer. “My gratitude is extended to the state Administration and the Legislature for their support through this process, and to our HTA staff for their dedication and commitment in advancing the best interests of the Hawaiʻi visitor industry and the wellbeing of our local communities statewide.”

Support Services for Destination Stewardship (RFP 23-08)

HTA issued RFP 23-08 on February 13, 2023, seeking a range of services including post-arrival visitor education; administrative support for HTA community programs; technical assistance and capacity building for community organizations and local businesses; and technology-enabled solutions to manage tourism hotspots.

HTA and the evaluation committee selected the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement for this work on HTA’s behalf. The new contract, worth $27,141,457 for the initial term spanning two and a half years, has an option for two one-year extensions, and is scheduled to begin on June 20, 2023.

Destination Brand Management & Marketing Services: United States (RFP 23-03)

The focus is on pre-arrival communications to educate visitors with information about safe, respectful, and mindful travel within the Hawaiian Islands. In 2022, visitors from the United States spent $16.2 billion in Hawaii, averaging $231 per visitor, per day.

HTA and the evaluation committee selected Hawaii Visitors & Convention Bureau, which will continue its work on HTA’s behalf as Hawaii Tourism United States. The new contract, worth $38,350,000 for the initial term spanning two and a half years, has an option for one two-year extension, and is scheduled to begin on June 22, 2023.

Destination Brand Management & Marketing Services: Canada (RFP 23-02)

HTA issued RFP 23-02 on March 14, 2023, seeking a contractor to educate Canadian visitors about traveling mindfully and respectfully while supporting Hawaii’s communities. The focus is also on driving visitor spending into Hawaii-based businesses as a means to support a healthy economy, and promoting festivals and events, agritourism programs, and voluntourism activities. In 2022, visitors from Canada spent $928.2 million in Hawaii, averaging $188 per visitor, per day.

HTA and the evaluation committee selected VoX International, which will continue its work on HTA’s behalf as Hawaii Tourism Canada. The new contract, worth $2,400,000 million for the initial term spanning two and a half years, has an option for one two-year extension, and is scheduled to begin on June 30, 2023.

In alignment with HTA’s guiding principle of Mālama Ku‘u Home (caring for our beloved home), its 2020-2025 Strategic Plan, and the community-driven Destination Management Action Plans being implemented on each island, the contractors’ work will advance a regenerative model of tourism for Hawaii. Work performance will be measured against HTA’s Key Performance Indicators with an emphasis on strengthening resident sentiment.

Contract terms, conditions, and amounts are subject to final negotiations with HTA and the availability of funds.

Teamsters File Lawsuit Against Republic Airways and Cape Air

eTurboNews:

The Teamsters have filed a lawsuit against Republic Airways and Cape Air for unlawfully requiring pilots to sign employment contracts with non-compete clauses that impose penalties ranging from $100,000 to $250,000.

The lawsuit asserts the employment contracts are an attempt by the airlines to change pilots’ working conditions unilaterally, in violation of federal labor law under the Railway Labor Act. The suit was filed in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana.

“The contracts that pilots at these two companies are forced to sign as a condition of employment are unlawful and we fully expect to win in court,” said Josh LeBlanc, President of Teamsters Local 357 and a Republic Airways pilot. “These punishing non-compete agreements are not a solution for the labor supply problem that these employers created of their own accord.”

The non-compete clauses that the companies are forcing on pilots require them to work at Republic Airways for a minimum of two years. In addition to the financial penalties, the pilots are barred from flying professionally for up to a year.

“If these companies are having a hard time recruiting pilots, then they should do what nearly every other airline has done in a competitive job market – increase wages and benefits,” said Joe Muckle, President of Teamsters Local 1224.

“Trying to retain professional pilots by handcuffing them with bogus contracts is illegal and bad business, which is why no other airline is doing this. The Teamsters will fight this with the full force of our union.”

Republic Airways Inc. is a regional airline subsidiary of Republic Airways Holdings that operates service as American Eagle, Delta Connection, and United Express using a fleet of Embraer 170 and Embraer 175 regional jets. It is headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Hyannis Air Service Inc., operating as Cape Air, is an airline headquartered at Cape Cod Gateway Airport in Hyannis, Massachusetts, United States. It operates scheduled passenger services in the Northeast, the Caribbean, Midwest, and Eastern Montana.

Founded in 1903, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters represents 1.2 million workers in the US, Canada, and Puerto Rico.

The tourism industry is an area that still hasn’t recovered after the Covid-19 pandemic. Although tourism in America is growing, there’s still a long way to go.

eTurboNews:

For many of us, life during the Covid-19 pandemic was unlike anything we have ever experienced or will ever experience again. It threw off so many things — upset daily routines, mass job losses, social isolation, and hospital occupancy were only the tip of the iceberg. Life was turned upside-down in more ways than one. It was a life-changing era for many, from toilet paper shortages to learning how to make Zoom calls and much more severe circumstances, like losing loved ones and jobs that required in-person labour. One of the industries that took a heavy hit during the Covid-19 pandemic in the US was the tourism industry, and things still aren’t quite back to normal.

While there has been a rebound in travel into and out of the US since the tapering off of the Covid-19 pandemic worldwide, there is still a long way to go. From a private jet charter across the world to simply hopping across the US/Mexico and US/Canada borders, visitors to and from the US still are not at pre-pandemic levels. However, things are looking up for the tourism industry in the US (and worldwide, really). Between the total number of visitors to the US in December 2019 compared to December 2022, only about two-thirds of the visitor volume has been recaptured.

According to a recent study, all aspects of travel — in and out of the US and beyond — are regaining their former levels. This includes international travel bookings, which have been the slowest to transition back to “normal” since the pandemic. However, the research data suggests that even the slow-to-grow international travel sector is currently up 200% compared to international travel last year. With international vacations on hold for many, honeymoon vacations from Covid weddings on standby, and all of the vacation days piled up from two years of travel restrictions and Covid isolation — people are ready to get out and see the world again.

The dynamic recovery of the tourism industry, both around the world and specifically in the US, has been reflected in the high demand for air travel capacity and accommodation. With climbing air travel rates approaching pre-pandemic levels (specifically around Europe) and global hotel occupancy rising, there is evidence of international travel demand beyond the number of people crossing the US border. This is exciting and refreshing news to many.

According to data from the UNWTO, international tourism has experienced a doubling of individuals travelling during the first quarter of 2023 than people travelling during the first quarter of 2022. With international arrivals approaching 80% of pre-pandemic numbers and 235 million international tourists travelling in the first quarter of 2023, it is safe to say that travel is back in style and on the road to recovery.

Many regions of the world are close to or have already exceeded pre-pandemic numbers of visitors to their countries. Europe has been leading this charge with intra-regional travel and travels from the US. At this point in 2023, the Americas are hovering around 68% recovery compared to international travel in 2019. With peak season between May and August heating up in the Northern Hemisphere, things are looking promising for the tourism industry in the US.

May was marked by National Travel and Tourism Week in the US — a celebration highlighting the travel and tourism industry and demonstrating the relationship between the travel industry and economic growth. In 2022 alone, the tourism industry earned $2.6 trillion and supported over 15 million jobs. These numbers are society-changing, as that means supporting the thriving of communities, making it possible for small businesses to compete with global corporates, and providing work for 15 million families across the US. A fraction of travel spending is also plugged right back into the economy through travel taxes, funding public services, and innovations in community development.

The tourism industry’s rebound still faces some sizable challenges during this projected recovery. With inflation as high as it is and oil prices rising — travel has become more expensive (and therefore less attainable) for the everyday traveller. But at the rate that the travel industry is rebounding and the projections for the upcoming quarters, all things tourism should return to near-normal levels soon. After being cooped up indoors for months on end, it’s safe to say we are ready for it.

Delta Rolls Out Its Largest Trans-Atlantic Schedule Ever

eTurboNews:

Delta Air Lines’ largest trans-Atlantic schedule ever is officially in full operation, and customers are flocking to idyllic locations like the golden beaches of France’s enchanting Cote d’Azur, sun-soaked Mediterranean islands and other vibrant cities brimming with history.

Customers traveling on Delta Air Lines can take advantage of more than 650 weekly flights across the pond in peak summer, a remarkable 30% increase in the airline’s seat capacity compared to 2022. The line-up features 77 total routes to 32 destinations across Europe and beyond, including many places where Delta operates as the largest U.S. carrier during peak summer: Italy, Iceland, France and Greece. In the past three months alone, the airline has launched or restarted 32 of these routes, most originating from key Delta hubs in Atlanta, Detroit, Los Angeles and New York-JFK.

FROM ATLANTA

In March, Delta renewed a daily connection between Atlanta and Tel Aviv. In May, the airline also introduced new daily flights between Atlanta and Nice, France, complementing existing service from New York-JFK, which has become one of the airline’s most sought-after seasonal routes.

And Atlanta customers seeking to explore the scenic highlands or immerse themselves in majestic castles can now fly directly to Edinburgh, Scotland, following the launch of new daily service in May, which builds on existing service from New York-JFK and Boston.

FROM LOS ANGELES

As the largest global carrier at LAX, Delta reinforced its leading position by reconnecting customers to Paris — a year-round destination known for iconic landmarks, and a daily route that will serve as a crucial connection point for the upcoming Olympic and Paralympic Games Paris 2024 and LA28.

Delta also responded to the high demand for summer travel by resuming daily nonstop service from Los Angeles to London Heathrow.

FROM NEW YORK-JFK

Delta has set new records at JFK with its largest trans-Atlantic schedule from that hub. Operating more than 230 weekly departures to 26 destinations, this schedule includes new additions like Geneva and the return of summer seasonal favorites like Reykjavík, Iceland; Venice, Italy; Prague; Nice; and Copenhagen, Denmark.

Delta also made a highly anticipated comeback to London Gatwick after a 15-year absence and restored its flights to Berlin, bringing its flying capacity back to the pre-pandemic levels of 2019.

FROM DETROIT

Just this week, Delta launched daily flights from Detroit to Rome, offering customers an exciting opportunity to explore the majesty and mystery of the Ancient Roman era. Additionally, Delta’s recent introduction of brand-new daily service to Reykjavik opened up a whole new realm of possibilities for adventure-seeking customers.

SoCal Hotel Workers Authorize Largest Industry Wide Strike

eTurboNews:

Southern California’s largest hospitality union, UNITE HERE Local 11, representing over 32,000 room attendants, cooks, dishwashers, front desk agents, servers and food service workers, voted to authorize a strike today.

UNITE HERE Local 11 could call for a strike at dozens of hotels with more than 15,000 workers as early as July 4th weekend. This would be the largest hotel worker strike in modern US industry.

During the pandemic, hotels received $15 billion in federal bailouts and cut jobs and guest services such as daily room cleaning. In 2023, Hotel profits in Los Angeles and Orange County exceeded pre-pandemic levels, yet hospitality workers continue to struggle to afford a place to live in the cities where they work.

Top on the list of concerns for hotel workers is the rising cost of housing. In a UNITE HERE Local 11 survey, 53% of workers said that they either have moved in the past 5 years or will move in the near future because of soaring housing costs.

The strike authorization vote comes after more than a month of failed negotiations with hotel employers–including Hyatt, Hilton, Highgate, Accor, IHG, and Marriott. The union’s key demands are an immediate $5 an hour wage increase to keep pace with the soaring cost of housing; affordable family healthcare; a pension that will enable workers to retire with security, and a safe and humane workload. Negotiations began on April 20 but the hotel industry has yet to respond with any wage proposals.

“I voted yes to strike because I commute two hours from my home in Apple Valley to downtown Los Angeles. I deserve to make enough money to live near where I work.” said Brenda Mendoza, a uniform attendant at the JW Marriott LA Live.

“I am ready to strike for our affordable health insurance, because my chronic illness will not wait.” said Lupe Pitones, Front Office PBX, Westin Bonaventure Hotel.

“Hotel workers who work in the booming Los Angeles’ tourism industry must be able to live in Los Angeles,” said Kurt Petersen, Co-President of UNITE HERE Local 11. “The industry shamelessly exploited the pandemic and is now reaping greater profits than ever before. Yet workers cannot afford to pay the rent. This 96% vote to authorize a strike sends a clear message to the industry that workers have reached their limit and are prepared to strike to secure a living wage.”

Southern California will be the first city in modern history to host back-to-back the FIFA World Cup in 2026 and the Olympics in 2028. In recent decades, these mega sports events have left local governments indebted for years and have permanently displaced millions of poor residents. UNITE HERE Local 11 is calling on the industry and political leadership to use the events to transform tourism jobs into family sustaining jobs and solve the housing crisis.
